Mini safe from a book or how to make a hiding place in your home library

Over the years, I've built a whole shelf of book safes. To make the book a more secure hiding place, I decided to incorporate a lock into it. And not a simple lock, but a secret one, so that it would not be clear that it was built into the book. Thus, if someone were looking for a secret book, then upon a quick inspection he would not have any suspicions. And if you have a large library, then you can easily hide the book among other books.

The lock is an electromagnetic solenoid with a small reed switch that opens when a magnet is applied to the reed switch. This way, you can place the lock mechanism and switch inside the book, hiding the necessary parts from prying eyes.

But there is a slight danger in this type of lock: if the battery runs out, it will take a lot of time to open the lock, and you may have to destroy the safe book too.

The project is simple enough that anyone who knows the basics of woodworking and soldering can easily make a book like this.

How to make a cache from a book (life hack, master class)

There are situations in life when you need to hide valuables from prying eyes. For this you need some kind of hiding place. For example, if you have a book on your desk or shelf, who would think that the most precious thing to you is in it. You can buy such a book, or you can make a cache book with your own hands .

There is no need to start cutting from the first sheets; leave a few sheets at the beginning of the book uncut. This way it will look more natural.

Then you need to draw markings on the first sheet. Choose the dimensions of the internal cache yourself.

Then, using a ruler, gradually cut out the hole. If you didn’t get a perfectly even hole, you can decorate it later.

The sheets must be glued tightly together. The front sheets do not stick together. Apply glue to the inside of the book. We also coat the entire book on the sides. Don't skimp on glue.

Place a sheet of paper between the uncut pages and the hole.

To make the sheets stick together better and faster, place something heavy on the book.

After about thirty minutes the glue will dry.

To decorate the cache, you can paste it inside with beautiful paper.

You can paint the sides of the pages with acrylic paint, but then it will stand out. Therefore, it is better to leave the natural color of the pages. Now your safe is ready. You can hide money, jewelry or other valuables in it and no one will know about it.

Warnings

  • Burning paper often contains dioxins, which are potent carcinogens. Therefore, make sure that you work in a ventilated area and have access to a fan or exhaust hood.
  • Because the Dremel tool cuts quite quickly, you may accidentally cut right through the book. Also note that it will burn the pages and the smoke may smell bad, depending on the type of paper the book is made from. The depth of the cut is also limited by the radius of the cutting blade.
  • The use of cache books is “not” effective when applied to law enforcement agencies.
  • Antique books are often heavily contaminated with numerous foreign substances contained in the dust. Dust particles can remain in books for years, harboring bacteria and harmful chemicals. Depending on your cutting method, this dust may become airborne in varying amounts. Therefore, it is recommended to carry out cutting in a well-ventilated area. It is recommended to use a HEPA vacuum cleaner with a filter, and most importantly you should protect your respiratory system with a mask that can filter out such particles. You can also use safety glasses to prevent dust and other small particles that may come from cutting from getting into your eyes. This is especially important if you use power tools such as a Dremel. Dust tends to spread throughout the entire room, so take the time to close all doors to minimize the spread of such particles into other rooms.
  • When choosing a book, make sure that none of your friends and family will need it. Also, try to find out who among those who have access to your library might be interested in this book, since it will be very awkward if someone accidentally discovers your stash.
  • Try adding a padlock to the binding of a book. This could be a magnetic clasp, button or strap. Otherwise, it may spontaneously open and its contents will fall out of your hiding place!

There are several mandatory requirements for a gun safe, failure to comply with which can lead to tragic consequences of an accident, and as a result, prison. If you want to clarify something, please contact me!
