Do-it-yourself curtain tiebacks: how to make grabbers with magnets, from a disk, fabric, satin ribbons

Comfort in a home consists of little things. Even the most ideal design without accessories will look unfinished and the room will lack a lived-in feel. At the same time, the abundance of unnecessary trinkets only clutters the room. Therefore, in addition to beauty, the interior content should also be useful.

Such an accessory that combines aesthetics and functionality are special curtain holders. But before you run to the store or start making curtain tiebacks with your own hands, it would be useful to learn a little more about this beautiful and necessary little thing.

What are grabs for?

If you don’t want to open and then close the curtains every time, or you need to move the kitchen curtain away from the stove without exposing the window, or the room simply lacks individuality and bright accents - in all these cases, the best solution would be to use special holders.

With their help, you can adjust the level of illumination in the room without opening the curtains. This will also protect the fabric from becoming greasy and dirty. In addition, curtains collected and laid in beautiful folds look much more aesthetically pleasing.

A well-chosen accessory will not only save the curtains from wear and tear. It will favorably emphasize the design and texture of the material, and also hide possible shortcomings of the model.

Holders will help you visually adjust the proportions of the window. To do this, just play with the height of their location.

What are curtain clips

Clothes pins for curtains are special fasteners that perform not only a decorative function, they have practical significance. As a decorative element, they bring uniqueness and unusualness to the interior, adding a touch of novelty even to old curtains.

Such elements add personality to the room, creating a beautiful, harmonious composition.

Using clips, you can change the length and width of curtains, give them the desired shape, and fix them in a certain position. They are made from various materials and can serve as both hangers for curtains and fastenings to the cornice. The choice of fittings depends on the characteristics of the curtains, the type of fabric and the style of the room.

The variety of holders will allow you to choose the best option for any interior.

Additional Information! Using curtain clips, you can adjust the lighting in the room and hide some of the imperfections of the window: visually enlarge a small opening, straighten out an asymmetrical arrangement, hide minor defects.

Types of grabs

Among the variety of pickups, five types can be distinguished:

  • fabric;
  • hard;
  • magnetic;
  • cords with tassels;
  • clips.

Let's look at each of them in more detail.

Fabric

They come complete with curtains, usually made from the same fabric as them. But this is in the most conservative version. Today's designers are making their wildest dreams come true with the help of textiles, bravely playing with the contrast of textures, patterns and colors.

For example, the delicacy and weightlessness of tulle curtains are favorably emphasized by clamps made of coarse burlap. And colorful curtains harmonize perfectly with plain holders.

Hard

Manufactured industrially. Most often - made of metal, less often - of plastic and wood. Attaches directly to the wall. They are convenient because you don’t need to tie, fasten or snap anything. All you need to do is hook the curtain onto the holder. The variety of forms is amazing: from a simple “doorknob” to real works of art.

Magnetic

An almost weightless, stylish accessory, which consists of a pair of magnets connected to each other with a textile tape, less often with plastic, and even less often with metal chains. It is convenient because it allows you to place the accessory at any height. It makes it easy to adjust the degree of grip of the curtains and form beautiful folds.

Cords with tassels

This is a classic among holders. Historians claim that similar ones were used in ancient Rome. In essence, it is just a cord, the ends of which are decorated with tassels. But it is the apparent simplicity that amazes with its sophistication and gives the interior a touch of luxury.

Hairpins

This holder consists of a base and a pin. As a rule, the base has the shape of an oval or round ring, but other geometric shapes are also found. Hairpins are decorated with rhinestones, beads, sequins, and patterns. The hairpin made using the kanzashi technique looks gentle and beautiful.

Manufacturing stages

All the work on creating a decorative composition will not take much time, provided you follow the following algorithm of actions:

  • The master class begins with the formation of flower petals, which will act as the main decor of the curtain tieback. To make the petals the same, you need to cut the satin ribbon into equal squares, and then form decorative blanks.
  • To prevent kanzashi flowers for curtains from blooming, the side parts of the fabric pieces need to be burned on fire.

  • To create petals, the prepared square needs to be folded diagonally, and then again in the middle, as shown in the photo.
  • To ensure that the petal retains its shape, it is better to stitch the edges of the workpiece with hand stitches, and then pull it off, forming a petal.
  • To make kanzashi curtain tiebacks beautiful, you need to make as many petals as possible. Then the decor will turn out lush and voluminous.
  • The next stage of the master class is the formation of flowers from petals. To prevent the flowers from falling apart, the center must be secured with beads.

Pickup attachment

The location of decorative elements plays a huge role. Not only the degree of illumination of the room, but also the harmony of the interior depends on it.

There are three possible options for mounting the holders:

  • flush with the window sill (with vertical division in equal parts);
  • below the window sill (the vertical is divided in a ratio of 2:1);
  • above the window sill (ratio of top and bottom 1:2).

The values in brackets apply to panoramic windows or doorways.

Let's consider each option.

Placing the tiebacks at the same level as the window sill is the most common fastening method. The division of the vertical plane into two equal parts looks organic and does not hide the size of the windows. This position of the holders is good for children's rooms, bedrooms and living rooms.

Placing a decorative element slightly above the window sill divides the window opening into upper and lower parts in a ratio of 1:2. This method is great for kitchens and rooms with narrow windows, visually widening the opening and providing fairly good illumination. But there is one caveat: this option is absolutely not suitable for heavy curtains.

Fastening the holders below the level of the window sill harmonizes overly wide windows, visually narrowing them. Although this means that some of the natural light in the room is lost. This method is best suited for heavy drapes or multi-layered curtains.

Materials for work

Considering that kanzashi and origami technology are similar, it is logical to assume that curtain decorations are made from paper. But this is the main difference between the two technologies. In the process of decorating curtain structures, pieces of fabric are used, from which decorations are formed. In addition, for work you will need:

  • Old CD.
  • Adhesive composition for instant gluing.
  • Decorative elements for decoration.
  • Manicure polish.
  • Oriental chopsticks.
  • Satin ribbon, 1-2.5 cm wide.

Unusual clips and pins for curtains

There are no limits to the implementation of any idea; now the trend is the most non-standard and original curtain clips. The only condition is to maintain consistency with the style, and the rest depends on the flight of fancy.

Similar products are used in the living room, bedroom, kitchen, nursery, loggia, and glazed balcony.

Preparing the base for the holder

You can make original Kanzashi decor for curtains with your own hands quite quickly. To do this, use a circle of smaller diameter to mark the surface of the disk with a circle smaller than the size of the disk. So that there is about 1-1.5 cm of free space left from the edge of the product to the applied circle. To draw such a circle, you can use a lid, a plate or a compass - it all depends on your preferences.

Run the tip of a heated soldering iron or a stationery knife along the marked circle. This will allow you to make the cut. The main thing is to do the work carefully so as not to injure your hands. If you don't succeed in cutting the circle the first time, turn the disc over and repeat the procedure on the other side. Next, you will need to carefully remove the small disk from the larger circle without breaking it.

All these steps must be repeated with the second disk. Then you have two rings that need to be glued together and put under a press for a while.

From the history

Curtain holders are considered to be an invention dating back to the Middle Ages. The high cost and richness of the royal decorations were given by curtains made of dense velvet materials of noble and rich colors, which were held by massive gilded curtain holders.

Such decorations not only showed the status of the owner, but also protected them from drafts in the cold winter.

Kanzashi in the interior

Over time, handmade artificial flowers slowly but surely migrated from hairstyles to modern design solutions. Craftsmen create amazing accessories: paintings and candlesticks, napkins and magnets for curtains.

But they are still used as women’s jewelry: hairpins, brooches or bracelets. Simple plain curtains and curtains are instantly transformed when using such wonderful and amazing decorations.

If you want to make exclusive tiebacks for curtains, then kanzashi is perfect for this purpose.
