To create a homemade moped from a chainsaw, you usually do not need any complex diagrams or drawings. The engine is mainly mounted on the frame; some craftsmen install the engine on the rear trunk. Let's consider the first option, which most closely matches the standard moped model. From the chainsaw we use the motor and gas tank, which are placed side by side - at the connection of the seat tube and the front down tube. The best place for the battery is on top, closer to the front of the frame.

Since a chainsaw moped is driven by transferring force from the rear wheel to the front, the design must include transmission pulleys (belt drive) or gears (chain drive). The motor shaft is connected to the front pulley, and the rear pulley is mounted on the rear wheel hub. The pulleys are connected with a strong belt and the tension force is adjusted very correctly. After all the parts are dry, you can begin installing the chainsaw engine. Make sure that the motor is well installed and secured. Without a cooling system, such a bicycle motor will overheat after 30 minutes of operation, so it is advisable to make a water cooling system. The homemade device looks like this. 2 flexible tubes are connected to the plastic bottle. One is attached in the upper part for air intake, the other in the lower part and through it, using a drip system, water flows to the engine cylinder head. The result is simple homemade drip irrigation and effective cooling.
As an additional comfort for the driver, you can install fenders, since clods of dirt and water can get on the engine. The resulting unit is capable of speeds of up to 60 km/h.

- The transmission link is made from sprockets from any old car or moped. One is mounted on the gearbox shaft, the other on the shaft on which the cutters or wheels are located. A chain from an old motorcycle is connected to each other.
- Next, all parts are installed and connected.

At first glance, a moped and a saw are absolutely incompatible things that cannot interact in any way. But this is wrong, and numerous craftsmen have proven that making a moped from a chainsaw is quite possible. But there is little to be done; this unit also drives and transports its owner. The speed, of course, is not very fast, but it’s still better than walking. You can use a bicycle as the basis for the design or do everything completely yourself. The bike motor amazes with its endurance, but this is what everyone expects from time-tested saws.
The older generation is familiar with self-propelled structures in the form of a bicycle with a motor. It is difficult to classify this equipment as mopeds, but they no longer fall into the category of bicycles. A kind of “middle link”. A significant advantage of such a unit is low fuel consumption and the ability to drive without a license. You can’t ride it on public roads, but you can drive along rural streets and alleys.
The frame has undergone changes, which have been extended to accommodate bicycle or other wheels, depending on what is available. A fuel tank is also attached, a motorcycle seat is installed, and a headlight is attached for driving in the evening. A water system has been developed to cool the bicycle motor. For proper assembly of a moped with your own hands, reliable service, for remodeling and designing other equipment, listen to the advice:
- Before assembling the motorbike, make sure that the main part - the bicycle - is in optimal technical condition. Modernization will increase the load on all its parts.
- Check the condition of the gasoline tank carefully. Fuel should not spill out, as this may cause a fire.
- In addition to engine power, don't forget about volume and weight. The volume should not exceed 50 cm³, weight - no more than 6 kg.
- When installing the belt, make sure that the part is held firmly on the wheels, otherwise the accuracy of the impulse transmission from the motor to the wheel will decrease.

An equally famous homemade product that the domestic “Kulibins” learned to make. To recreate it we will need:
- a scooter designed to support the weight of the person who will operate it. It is desirable that it initially have a manual braking system. The pneumatic wheelbase of the scooter must be durable;
- a chainsaw from which the engine is removed - medium and high-power models are suitable.
The process of assembling a scooter looks simplified compared to previous homemade products:
- First, remove the motor base and secure it to the back of the scooter frame. Make sure that the motor and wheel sprockets match;
- we attach a manual accelerator with ignition of the chain saw - this way the operator can control the moving process;
- If necessary, the scooter is equipped with a brake pedal, but in most cases, the lever for manual control of the scooter is enough for its full operation.

First of all, draw a picture of your future masterpiece. You don't need to have the skills of an artist to do this. A sketch of the future moped helps the master decide on the design and technical features of the creation. Then create a technical sketch to determine the parts that will be needed. Then purchase all the necessary parts. At this stage you will have to spend money, since many parts cannot be made: engine, gearbox, wheels, frame pipes.

Assembly of a moped begins with the frame. It’s easier to take ready-made parts and elements from the frames of other mopeds and mini-motorcycles. Your entire frame will have to be made on a special one from pipes. However, do not use seamed water pipes - they are not strong enough. It is better to use pipe elements from motorcycles. Use a blowtorch to bend them, and a welding machine to weld them. Don't forget to reinforce the frame with spacers and brackets.
Weld the front fork to the frame through the bushing. You can also bend it yourself from pipes or remake a ready-made one to your liking. For a simple moped, a bicycle fork will do. For a chopper, you will have to work on the fork yourself.
It is better not to take a rear fork from a bicycle, since a moped has higher speeds and greater mass, therefore the loads will be high. Ready-made ones from mopeds or motorcycles are recommended. When making a swingarm rear suspension, try to install the swingarm as firmly as possible on the frame and cylinder. When using a classic suspension with two shock absorbers, the latter can be taken from any domestic light-class motorcycle.
The next step is installing the engine and gearbox into the frame. Think about its mounting in advance and cut the brackets from a steel sheet. Screw the brackets with bolts and nuts to the engine and tie the engine to the frame with wire. Then “tack” the brackets by welding, remove the engine and finally weld the brackets.
The final step is to install the wheels. If the rear wheel is a bicycle one, it will have to be modified by welding a new sprocket. Install the fuel tank and power system onto the frame. The fuel tank is up to the owner's taste, and the power system must match the engine, although it can be upgraded.
Electrical equipment must be moped or motorcycle type and include all lighting devices required by law: headlight, tail light, turn signals. After this, small parts will remain: the saddle, controls, additional equipment.
Benefits of using a chainsaw to create a moped
Personally assembling a bicycle with a motor from a household chainsaw gives the manufacturer a number of important advantages.
These include:
- the ability to create a unit that has the technical characteristics needed for operation in specific conditions;
- low cost - a homemade motor scooter from a chainsaw can be built using almost improvised materials. At the same time, the device will show fairly high efficiency and have good maneuverability on rough terrain;

This engine is distinguished by its high endurance, good traction parameters, a solid reserve of torque and a long service life. The engine of this brand does not require expensive maintenance and does not require frequent replacement of parts.
To cool the motor, the domestic manufacturer has provided an effective forced air circulation system in the tool’s design. A reliable manual starter is responsible for starting the engine. During operation, the internal combustion engine parts are lubricated with oil, which the operator adds to gasoline when mixing the fuel mixture. A durable foam filter is used to clean the air supplied to the carburetor.
To connect the saw set with the motor, the saw device has flange connections. They are fixed with a clamp that is attached to the handle of the saw. This unusual design solution allows the owner of the tool to rotate the bar and chain at any angle necessary for work. In addition, this arrangement makes it possible to quickly disconnect the saw motor for further production of various homemade products.
Each Druzhba model is equipped with a standard 2-chamber carburetor. To generate a spark plug in the saw device, an electronic ignition system and a spark plug are responsible. To suppress engine noise, the model is equipped with a basic muffler positioned away from the operator.
The gearbox is responsible for the formation and stable transmission of torque from the motor to the chain set. For its manufacture, the manufacturer uses high-quality hardened steel coated with a protective chrome alloy. This significantly increases the working life of the mechanism and increases its resistance to heat and rust.
How to make a moped from a chainsaw and a bicycle

If you need to clear a small area of snow, then a homemade snow blower can be equipped with a motor from Druzhba. To assemble a more powerful unit, you will need a Shtilev engine (power 3 kW). DIY motorbike from a chainsaw
Not every happy owner of a bicycle is delighted with the need to pedal and waste his energy. A motorized bicycle is more convenient and less expensive in terms of power.
Making a bicycle with a chainsaw motor with your own hands is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. For this you will need:
- bike;
- a saw with a gas engine power of at least 2000 W - this indicator will determine whether it can start moving. As practice shows, the engine power is 2 hp. It is enough for a motorbike to reach a speed of up to 40 km/h;
- reservoir for the future fuel tank;
- cable from an old bicycle;
- a handle to allow you to adjust the throttle;
- bolt ties, nuts and other small consumables for creating fasteners;
- connecting elements for creating a connection between the wheels and the engine.
- we assemble the drive shaft - remove the rear wheel tire and install a tire with a diameter of up to 2.5 cm. This equipment will help to adjust the engine speed, and like a gearbox, reduce the number of revolutions;
- We use electric welding to weld a stand from the corners - it will help install the engine from the chainsaw;
- alteration of the clutch - you can use a centrifugal one from a factory saw, connecting it to the wheel;
- we adapt the gas tank - it can be located next to the engine, or on the frame;
- we attach the wire from the engine ignition system to one of the bicycle handles;
- attach a cable from the carburetor to the gas handle so that throttle control is simple and quick;
- We equip the motorbike with protective equipment: mirrors, a flashlight, and proceed to testing a homemade bicycle from a chainsaw.
As you can see, installing a chainsaw motor on a bicycle is not so difficult.
Option 2: assembling a moped with a gas engine
This is an advanced method, and the result is more reminiscent of a real moped. To make it, we need:
- gasoline engine;
- moped parts: wheels, shock absorbers, exhaust pipe, brakes;
- proven bike frame;
- tools.

Since here we are going to get a real moped, the frame must have increased strength and weight. Also, mopeds have a slightly different frame design, which may require some modifications.
Wheels from a moped are put on the frame. It will be necessary to change the fork design, since the width of the wheels will be wider than the distance between the dropouts. If possible, install shock absorbers on the fork.
Carefully overhaul the moped power unit and replace all faulty parts. The propulsion system will require a separate space; for this, a welded metal platform at the bottom of the frame would be a good option. The engine and fuel tank are secured to the site using metal fasteners. It is better to place the battery closer to the steering wheel. An exhaust pipe is connected to the bottom of the engine. The pipe must be firmly secured to the frame so that it does not dangle while driving.
Transmission. Next, you will need to make the engine torque transmission system:
- Remove the pedals and chainring from the bicycle frame.
- Install sprockets on the rear wheel of the moped and the engine shaft. A star on a wheel with a larger diameter.
- Place the rear wheel on the frame.
- Connect the stars using a chain.
Motor connection. The clutch and throttle valve are connected to the ignition lever via drive cables. The tension is selected so that the engine can immediately start and start spinning the wheel.
Brakes. If only one brake (for example, the front brake) may be sufficient for a bicycle, then it is better to play it safe and install them on both wheels. The rear one can be used as the main one, and the front one as an auxiliary one, to adjust the speed.
