Central engine. Look what you can make from LuAZ if your hands grow from where they need to be

It may seem that making an ATV from the Ural is quite difficult, but it is not so. You will need to prepare the necessary parts and tools, and also review the assembly instructions. From one old but working motorcycle you can make a universal four-wheeler, which will be used both for off-road driving and on the farm.

It is worth noting that it is quite difficult to assemble a 4x4 Ural ATV with your own hands. To work it out efficiently, you will need to seek help from a team of professionals: you will need a turner, an electrician and a welder. Making the front suspension independent is more expedient than assembling a homemade 4x4 ATV from a Ural. Otherwise, control may be difficult. The fact is that to provide all-wheel drive, it will be necessary to supplement the system with a gearbox, which will lead to an increase in the weight of the ATV. To assemble a rear-wheel drive structure, you need to prepare the following:

  • Work motorcycle "Ural".
  • Steering rod of transverse type.
  • One pair of front hubs from a rear wheel drive vehicle.
  • Front suspension arms.
  • Axle shaft or driveshaft.
  • Thick-walled light alloy pipe.
  • Rear axle.

It is worth noting that the rear axle and front hubs must be taken from the same car. This will avoid the procedure of adjusting the disks to the fixing holes. It is recommended to take these parts from Moskvich or VAZ. The work will require a set of hand tools, as well as an angle grinder and a welding machine.

How to make an ATV from a Ural motorcycle?

At the first stage of creating an all-terrain vehicle, you need to make a suspension. First, the old vehicle will need to be disassembled. The frame of the device must be freed from all elements; the technician needs to remove the shock absorbers and steering wheel. It is advisable to determine in advance what type of suspension will be installed for an all-terrain vehicle from the Urals, for example:

  • Suspension on springs.
  • Rigid design without shock absorber.
  • Suspension with shock absorbers on springs.

Of course, it is best to go with a suspension with spring shock absorbers. They can be taken from an old motorcycle. Since the device will have 4 wheels, the missing mechanisms will have to be purchased. The pendant in this case will have the shape of the letter “A”. You need to correctly calculate the weight of the future ATV. In this case, shock absorbers will ensure a smooth ride when driving on hard off-road.

ATVs designed on the basis of the Ant scooter

For 36 years, the Soviets organized the production of Ant motor scooters. In total, over the years, 8 models have been produced, differing in gas tank volume and engine power. Today, the Ant scooter is an ideal base for creating an ATV with your own hands. In order to convert the “Ant” into an ATV, you should perform some fairly simple steps: slightly redesign the frame, work on reinstalling the seatposts, and so on. Installing the steering wheel and brakes of the future ATV will require special attention, continuous effort and time. When constructing homemade ATVs, it is strictly not recommended to use a brake system that has previously been used. It would be much safer to buy a new one. At the same time, the steering system can be used from an old Ant scooter or an Oka car. The final stage of creating an ATV from an Ant scooter is installing turn signals, headlights and stops.

Frame

The frame for the all-terrain vehicle will have to be made from scratch. It is assembled from metal pipes, which must be both strong and lightweight. Some blanks can be taken from the Ural. Its frame is suitable for such purposes, since the weight of the structure is low. At the same time, the pipes taken from the motorcycle are characterized by good flexibility and strength.

But to assemble the frame, it is still recommended to take some more material. Such pipes should not be too thick. Otherwise, the motorcycle will turn out to be heavy, devoid of maneuverability and dynamism.

Preparatory stage

So let's get started. First of all, prepare your tools and equipment. A lot of welding work will be required, for which manual electric arc welding is quite suitable. Choose electrodes for welding critical and vibration-loaded structures, which will be the ATV frame. By the way, this very frame can be welded with your own hands from ordinary water pipes. These are easy to find at your nearest scrap metal shop or metal depot. Choose a pipe diameter from 25 to 32mm, and the wall thickness should be around 3mm. To bend such pipes, it is advisable to have a pipe bender, but if you don’t have one, then you can bend the pipes for the frame frame manually using a lever, heating the place of the desired bend with a gas burner, or better yet, with an oxygen-gas torch.

Engines and transmission

The Ural motor is most often used to create homemade ATVs. This engine is quite powerful and durable, which provides the motorcycle with high functionality. Such an ATV can be used both for off-road driving and for economic purposes.

It is worth noting that the Ural engine is quite powerful. This is a four-stroke two-cylinder engine with a volume of 750 cm³ and a power of 41 hp. With.

During assembly, it is recommended to use not only the engine from the Ural motorcycle, but also its transmission. In this case, the system will work smoothly. The presented motorcycle has a 4-speed gearbox and reverse gear. The standard equipment also includes a cardan drive for the rear wheel.

Required materials and tools

There are quite a lot of purposes for which a homemade ATV will be used:

  1. Hunting.
  2. Fishing.
  3. Going for a picnic or just a walk across rough terrain.
  4. Moving cargo and not very large items.

The engine power, suspension, the presence of a trunk and its size, and additional functions depend on the principle and region of application. For example, an engine removed from a scooter, although small, is very light, therefore, if it gets stuck in sand or mud, the unit can be pulled out without any problems. But if it is necessary to transport heavy objects, then its volume and power will not be enough for these actions.

You can make the drawing yourself, depending on your desires, or you can find ready-made ones on the Internet, of which there are countless numbers.

To complete the work you cannot do without the following tools:

  1. Welding machine.
  2. Grinder or electric jigsaw.
  3. Drills and screwdrivers.
  4. A set of wrenches.
  5. Vernier calipers for precise measurements.
  6. Hammer and screwdriver.
  7. Knife.
  8. Pliers and other small tools.

If you plan to make the frame yourself, you need to take care of finding equipment that bends pipes. If you are unsure of your own abilities, it is better to entrust these actions to specialists.

The ATV consists of the following parts:

  1. Motor. Suitable for both car and motorcycle. The smaller the engine, the more fuel consumption decreases. If the unit will be operated in hot weather, then you should choose a part that has cooling.
  2. Frames. It is necessary to secure the engine well on it using bolts and connect the drive and transmission.

If the frame is made independently, pipes are taken and welded together in a certain order. The ears are immediately welded, serving as fasteners for shock absorbers and levers, as well as brackets.

When the finished frame is being altered, only the frame should be left and the necessary components should be attached by welding. Next, the racks are attached and painted:

  1. Suspensions front and rear. You can take the rear axle of the car, with a differential present, or use a cardan-geared design. The levers are attached to the frame with silent blocks, tilted struts and shock absorbers are attached.
  2. Steering. It comes in the form of a car wheel or a motorcycle steering wheel. Some combine both options. It is better to replace the gear drive with a chain drive, which will help save on maintenance. The gearbox is usually made mechanical, which improves the maneuverability of the unit.

Attention! The input shafts must be directed directly to both the front and rear axles.

  3. Braking and cooling systems.
  4. Battery and road lighting devices.
  5. Main building. Made from fiberglass. You should first cut out and fasten the foam base according to the drawings. Then apply several layers of fiberglass, inserting metal fasteners to attach to the frame. Then dry the device, prime it, clean it and paint it.
  6. A muffler that is easy to make yourself.

Bring to life from the lightest to the heaviest ATV models

Important! It is advisable to purchase a new brake system to ensure your safety.

Body and wiring

Attachments, a gas tank and other structural elements are attached to the assembled frame. Each node must be firmly fixed on the prepared platform. It is important that the vehicle remains stable after assembly.

For many motorcycle owners, it is important that the appearance of the ATV is spectacular. Therefore, the design must be thought out in advance, before assembly begins. You will need to install a driver's seat and lighting fixtures. Turn signals and headlights are also removed from the donor motorcycle.

DIY ATVs

If you decide, the drawings become the starting point for starting work. On the Internet you can find a variety of drawings of ATVs based on different equipment. Here you can also see photos of ATVs that our craftsmen made with their own hands.

Craftsmen make Izha, Ural or other equipment. For example, if you are planning to make an ATV from Oka with your own hands, you can take a motor - it will cope well with a light ATV. The gearbox can also be borrowed from Oka. If you manage to rotate the engine along the frame and direct the input shafts from the gearbox directly to the axles, you can get a self-made 4x4 ATV, but without a transfer case.

The main stages of working on an ATV

A good unit can be obtained on the basis of Soviet-made motorcycles. For example, if you are planning to create an ATV from the Ural with your own hands, you can conditionally divide all the work into four stages:

  • Frame modernization;
  • Installation of engine and transmission;
  • Suspension equipment;
  • Equipment and installation of the dashboard.

By the way, you need to immediately decide on the type of control - it will be steering or motorcycle. In the case of choosing a motorcycle steering system, you already have the necessary spare parts from Ural, but if you are planning a steering system for your horse, take care of the necessary parts in advance.

At the first stage of converting the Ural into an ATV, you will have to play with the frame. Although the Ural frame is the most suitable for ATVs, it almost always remains unchanged, although this depends on your drawing. More often it is only scalded with a system for mounting the suspension.

Next you need to think about the rear suspension and rear axle. There are two solutions to this problem. The first is the creation of a design based on the original cardan and gearbox. The result will be a lightweight design without a differential. And the second warrant is a design based on a road bridge. But if you don't want to have an ATV, you'll have to shorten it to the width of a car. Naturally, the process is not easy, but you will get a differential that will not interfere with the roads.

But still, the most labor-intensive process is creating the front suspension. Although it can be made from anything, because the ATV does not have much weight and therefore reliable levers can be created of any size.

ATV with four-wheel drive

To make it, you will need a steering system from a car, a drive from a manual transmission, suspension and differentials. The suspension, like the steering, can be removed from the car. In such cases, the frame is cooked completely from scratch, based on the size of the engine of the future ATV. On the front suspension, you should take into account the space for the drive gearbox.

Using automotive products purchased on the secondary market, you can relatively inexpensively assemble vehicles for difficult roads and rural areas. One of the budget options for the source is the Ural motorcycle, since it is inexpensive, has rear-wheel drive and a four-stroke engine. Due to its positive aspects, it is popular.

A self-made ATV is not only a convenient and practical vehicle, it is a reason for pride and an opportunity to demonstrate your skills. Outwardly, it may be inferior to factory designs, but in terms of its technical characteristics, home-made ATVs are no worse.

Perhaps the only negative (apart from the time spent, since doing what you love is never a burden) is the need to involve auto experts in order to obtain documents and be able to register the ATV.

A quad bike is actually any four-wheeled vehicle, since in Latin “quadro” means “four”. In the CIS, this name most often means all-wheel drive, representing a symbiosis of a motorcycle and a car. From a motorcycle, an ATV has adopted mobility, maneuverability, lightness, and speed, and from a car - excellent cross-country characteristics, power and controllability. The result is a unique vehicle designed for a variety of purposes.

The domestic market provides only foreign models of ATVs, the cost of which is often exorbitant. At the same time, you can easily find used motorcycles and cars on the secondary transport market at an extremely low price.

For example, the Ural motorcycle is large, bulky, heavy and power-hungry, has an excellent four-stroke engine with reverse gear and costs a penny. For this reason, it is much cheaper and more fun for enthusiasts to create their own designs of these SUVs.

A typical factory ATV - shiny, neatly built, strong and powerful.

Its homemade counterpart, which is slightly inferior in appearance, and even more so in terms of power.

Optional equipment

ATVs are used not only for pleasure trips, but also as a reliable, hardy assistant in the farmstead. They are used for transporting goods, crops, or used instead of a small tractor in the garden. And for these needs it is necessary to somehow place a lot of things on the ATV. If you need an ATV mainly for personal needs or going on a picnic, you can make a case for the ATV with your own hands, in which you can place the necessary things. But for a subsidiary farm, it is better to make a trailer for an ATV with your own hands. If you have already mastered assembling an ATV, then it will take you very little time to build a small trailer, but it will bring a lot of benefits.

An ATV is an excellent off-road solution. It is popular among fans of extreme recreation, fishermen, hunters and anyone who needs to get into places where a car cannot pass. This type of transport is easy to operate, has excellent maneuverability and is quite stable while driving.

Factory-made ATVs are quite expensive, so craftsmen choose the economical option: they make such machines themselves. Of course, this solution is not for everyone: you must not only have golden hands and the tools necessary for the job, but also have a good understanding of the structure of a car, motorcycle and the ATV itself.

If you have a persistent desire to make this miracle of technology yourself, you should start with planning. It is necessary to decide on the models on the basis of which the transport will be assembled, and draw up drawings for them. Be sure to think about what tools will be needed during the work process and make sure that they are in good condition. No matter how boring this activity may seem, nothing will come of it without prior preparation. If for some reason it is not possible to make a drawing yourself, you should find a ready-made version.

Next you will need the sources. From a technical point of view, an ATV is a cross between a car and a motorcycle. Accordingly, to make it you will need a motorcycle and a car. It is optimal to select domestic models on the secondary market; it will be inexpensive, but the quality is quite satisfactory for the construction of an ATV. It is better to use a small car like an Oka or Niva. Among motorcycles, the Ural is very popular for such purposes; you can take the IZH.
