Homemade lock: options, manufacturing methods, photos

In this article we will talk about how to make locks for your garage or outbuildings yourself. As a rule, locks that are used in garages or outbuildings are made using simple designs. They are opened using special keys. Due to the fact that they are installed indoors, this makes them as invisible as possible. The production of such locks is carried out individually, taking into account all the wishes and capabilities of the owner.

It is quite difficult to select master keys for such locks; this is the main advantage when compared with standard models. We will look at what homemade locks are for use in garages and outbuildings, and also talk about their differences from those sold in stores and markets.

Features and types of homemade lock designs

A garage is necessary to protect a car or any other vehicle from external factors, including theft. As you understand, with the help of a garage you protect your car from the effects of precipitation and other natural phenomena. But there is no complete guarantee of the safety of your vehicle. To a large extent, the safety of the car depends on how strong and reliable the lock is.

There are several types of garage locks:

  • Mounted.
  • Mortise.
  • Invoices.
  • Rack and pinion.
  • Mixed devices.

The main criterion that distinguishes these devices from others is the manufacturing method. But there are both factory modifications and homemade ones. We will talk about the latter in as much detail as possible. After all, homemade locks for garages are increasingly being used due to the fact that they are very reliable and more difficult to open.

Selection of materials and tool preparation

To create a lock, you need steel or other metal. If the design has a crossbar, it is advisable to make it armored. All parts must be durable and strong. Even the most complex lock is sometimes easier not to open, but to cut out. Thus, ordinary steel arches become the weak point of hanging structures. If there is a gap in the door, then the lock is simply sawed through it.

Attention! When creating your own design, it is important not only to come up with a lock, but also to properly hide all its parts. Do not show others how to open the garage door or the features of the lock.

In addition to the parts, the source of which can be a purchased lock, special equipment is required. To create a mechanism, you may need a welding machine, lathe and milling machines, microcircuits, a soldering iron and other tools. Sometimes even programming skills. The specific set will depend on the design features.

What to look for

If you decide to purchase a factory copy, you need to determine its quality. Very often the price speaks volumes about the quality of the product. If you want to purchase a high-quality and reliable device, you will have to fork out and spend quite a lot of money.

The fact is that in this case the lock will not be made using stamping, as is done in most cases. It will be assembled by hand by professionals. There are several points that will help distinguish factory-assembled products from homemade products. As a rule, second-rate handicrafts are of rather low quality, hence we can talk about the low reliability of the design.

If you decide to make your own lock, you will lose quality - that's undeniable. And this will primarily affect the safety of the vehicle. Installing a lock is a very important step and must be approached very responsibly. There is one thing to consider when installing the lock. Normal protection will be provided only by a mechanism that is not noticeable or is not visible at all.

Operating principles of padlocks

Such designs are the most common; the entire mechanism is located in a suspended housing. In homemade padlocks, locking is carried out using a pin or other similar elements. They are inserted inside the mechanism. In order for the design to work, it is necessary to install special eyes on the doors that are planned to be locked. An arc is installed in them, which, in fact, performs the locking. But this design option has one very big drawback, which completely negates all its positive qualities.

This type of lock can be picked very easily. The fact is that such lock designs are installed on the outside of the building. Therefore, any attacker has direct access to it. Using a master key or grinder, you can easily open such a homemade garage lock. Most often, locks of this type are used for additional protection when combinations occur. In other words, there are several mechanisms used to lock the garage.

Homemade rack locks

Such locks are also quite popular, they have one advantage. They are mounted exclusively inside garage doors. Locking occurs using several sliding rods. The lock is opened using an individual key, which is installed in the well.

When you turn it, the latches are pulled out. The design of the lock is a little more reliable, but it can still be opened without any problems if desired. To do this, the locking elements are simply sawed off, or a key is selected.

Homemade designs

It is very common to find pinwheels used to lock garage doors. They work like a deadbolt. The design is simple, you can install it yourself. The operating principle is as follows:

  • Eyelets must be mounted on the inside of the gate; they can be made of either metal or wood.
  • A turntable must be installed in the center of the gate using a through bolt. It will be driven by turning relative to the central part.
  • The ends of the turntable should fit into the eyes. This is how they lock the doors as securely as possible from the inside.

There are absolutely no parts of the castle outside. It is almost impossible to hack this design, so its reliability is very high.

Let's sum it up

Garage protection is the main task for every car owner. And if thieves have learned to bypass standard store-bought products, it’s time to show your imagination and make your own cunning and unusual lock with a secret. With it you can definitely be sure that no one will encroach on your property. And thanks to the visual video, you can make similar designs with your own hands.

Locks for swing gates

This is a type of latch, but there is a slight difference. Espagnols, as a rule, move in a horizontal plane and are usually used if the gate has one leaf. If the gate is swinging, then the elements are made of metal rods that move vertically in the eyes. These lugs are installed on the sashes. In order to lock the door as securely as possible, holes must be made in the ground with metal rods. They should be larger in diameter than the pins.

In order to increase the reliability and strength of the entire structure, it is necessary to install metal tubes of suitable diameter in the holes. It is advisable to concrete them after installation. But such constipation has one drawback. They can only be closed from the inside, so you will need to install an additional door. Typically, these locks are used if the garage is attached to the house or is located in the yard.

Original wood crafts

Germany is a country of castles, there are a great many of them scattered across the hills and mountains, some are dilapidated, others have been restored and are in good condition and in personal possession. The most famous are probably Ludwig's castles, in particular Schwanstein.

Our town is also famous for one very large, majestic and even, I would say, cumbersome - this is Johannesburg Castle, which stands towering above the banks of the Main. Perhaps I’ll show his photo later too. True, it is not as old as these wooden castles - it was built in the Renaissance, but still.

I immediately really liked the original idea of making such crafts from a natural material - wood. I thought - and it’s true, everything ingenious is simple! But not everything simple is brilliant. Unfortunately. How did anyone come up with this?

Wooden castles made from chaga and growths on wood

I took this photo at the first stand, where a variety of crafts were presented, all made from wood. It looks more like chaga or a growth on a tree.

It seems so simple, such a simple idea, but how well thought out! It really is like a real old castle, covered with snow, standing on a hill, only made of wood. Minimum additions and maximum effect.

I blurred the background a little so that the castle itself could be seen better.:) I would like to see a couple more bare winter trees there. And a bird on the roof - a crow. And attach the flag to the toothpick.

Crafts - locks made from wine corks

This is the same master - tiny locks from ordinary cork bottle caps. To make it clear to everyone how all this was done, I turned one cork in the foreground over, back side to front, and took this photo.

All these crafts - from chaga, growths, cork wine corks, logs, wood cuts - are made using the same technology. Cute tiny souvenirs. True, the bottle probably cannot be sealed with such a stopper.

Wooden castles from scraps with bark

These are the work of the same person, all the castles are made of logs - quarters of cut trees, such logs are split with an ax to then heat the stove. I think there was no need for an axe.

All the crafts look good and are original in their own way, although they are made from different types of trees - choose according to your taste!

There are coniferous cuts, and even birch, and the most common tree in these forests - beech. This can be seen in the bark and color of the wood.

On the top left, one castle is made of logs without bark, well sawn, but still they look more interesting with bark on the roof. Made of birch - more like castles in Wurzburg or Salzburg, because they are light.

How to make your own castle

Now let's look at simple instructions for making an overhead system with a valve. It must be driven using a special homemade key.

The design consists of the following elements (we will also consider their manufacture):

  1. First, the base of the castle is made. It is a metal plate; it is advisable to use it with a thickness of at least 3 mm. Plate diameter 10 mm.
  2. It is also necessary to cut two overlays from similar metal: width 22 mm and length 120 mm.
  3. Next, you need to bend these pads in a vice.
  4. After this, you need to make a valve.
  5. Make a guide tube, the outer diameter should be about 1 cm. The lock key should subsequently fit into it. The length of this tube depends on how thick the gate is. The edge of the tube must be cut at an angle of 60 degrees.
  6. At the first stage of assembly, it is necessary to weld the pads on the edges of the base. If elements suddenly become deformed after welding, they need to be straightened. If the curvature is small, it can be eliminated.

It is necessary to drill 4 holes in the corners of the plate, with the help of which the lock will be fixed to the sash. Install the guide tube into the plate hole. As a result, you should have a relatively cheap and simple homemade lock with a “secret”.

The bevel must be directed towards the overlays. After this, you can weld the tube to the base, but do not forget that these elements must be perpendicular. Next you need to install the linings and the valve. Two bolts with a diameter of M4 need to be screwed into the valve. The length of the bolts should be about 8 mm. These screws will limit the stroke of the valve. It is recommended to install spring washers under their heads so that they do not unscrew during operation of the lock.

DIY lock making technology

Since the castle must be unique, there are no clear instructions on how to make it. You can consider the principles of operation of locking mechanisms and modify them so that you can assemble everything yourself.

Simple screw and padlock with security

One of the simple and classic designs that is suitable for a padlock or rim lock. It is quite large in size. The operating principle of such a lock is as follows:

  1. A key is inserted into the groove. It looks like an ordinary rod, without thread. After turning it, the lock is opened.
  2. The secret of the key is hidden inside it. It is distinguished by its large size in diameter. There is a hidden pin at the end which, when released, can freely move in and out of the main part.
  3. The hidden part is released with a screw in the key. And by rotating it is fixed inside it again.
  4. When the pin is free, after scrolling in the lock it falls into a special niche. Then turning the key activates the lock.
  5. To remove the key from the lock, you must first screw the pin into it.

The tricky mechanism makes it difficult to select a master key, since the key is usually angled, and the thief does not know where the groove is inside to open it. It's difficult to choose a master key.

Falling model

Overhead or mortise lock. It is a disk with holes. The bolt extends and retracts by rotating the disc with grooves. In the center of the disk there is a hole for a key. Usually it is small. The secret of the castle is in the falling key. The disk is located vertically, the grooves go inside the door or gate. There may be different numbers of them.

When the key is inserted into the hole, the hinge in it comes into action. That is, parts of the key, under the influence of gravity, sag at an angle of 90 °. This hanging part has protrusions that match the grooves on the disk. When they are inserted, when the key is turned, the lock comes into action. It is this “swinging” structure that is called the falling key.

Electromechanical option

A conventional lock is reinforced with an electric lock. There are different designs of such a lock, but the principle of operation is simple. There is a receiver inside and the key is the transmitter. A message is transmitted by radio wave, it is checked by the receiver and, if it matches, the lock is unlocked.

To protect the radio signal from interception, an algorithm for changing the key after each use is built inside.

Another option is when the garage is located near the house. The lock cannot be opened while the line is energized. The control is located in the house and is turned off by the owner the moment he goes to the garage. You can find drawings of such locks and, if you know how to work with electricity and have programming skills, create your own.

Internal rack lock

A classic option for the garage. The locking bars fit into the grooves under the action of a spring. To open the lock, the springs must be compressed. To do this, grooves were cut diagonally on a pair of crossbars. They match the ones on the key.

When the key is inserted, it slides along the slides and the springs are compressed. The bolt comes out of the groove. That is, to open such a lock you just need to insert the correct key.

Key for a lock with a "secret"

As a key, you must use a rod with a round cross-section, the diameter of which is 8 mm. The length should be about 15 cm. This is the optimal value. As you understand, making a homemade garage lock with your own hands is half the “trouble”; you will also need to make a “tricky” key.

You need to bend one edge at a right angle, this will be the handle that you will hold when opening. On the other side you need to form a cut at an angle of about 60 degrees. It is necessary to drill a hole near this cut. Next, make a groove. After this, assemble the key for the homemade lock with your own hands.

The secrecy of this design is ensured by the fact that key holes are drilled in the valve, and there can be an interval of 1 mm and above. This will provide the lock with the greatest number of security options. Similar homemade door locks are widely used in warehouses, outbuildings and garages.

Electrical diagram

The lock control circuit is shown in Fig. 2. The lock is open as in Figure 1.
