How to convert an old sofa into a bed?

How to make a bed out of a sofa yourself

The problem of small apartments and uncomfortable old furniture is solved if you apply your own ingenuity and a little creativity to this issue. In addition, you can get an exclusive item - this relates to the question of how to make a bed out of a sofa. Indeed, sometimes there are very uncomfortable models to sleep on, and too familiar to be scrapped. So, having a not very comfortable bed and a few tools, you can create something. Let's look at a simple version of a folding bed.

Scheme of a wooden bed.

Idea No. 5: soft bench, sofa or daybed for the garden

If there is no suitable basis for making a couch for your home, you can make a more affordable country version. In this case, an old soft block from a sofa is placed on a very simple wooden base.

One option is to make a base from pallets. It is enough to paint or varnish them, and then place elements from the old sofa on top.

Country and garden furniture made from pallets is one of the fashion trends. You can purchase this material at any construction site. Before use, pallets are checked for cracked boards, then washed and thoroughly sanded with a machine. After this, a layer of primer is applied to the boards, and only then they are painted or varnished.

A more complex option involves installing homemade armrests and backrests on a base of pallets. They can be made, for example, from pipes. If the base itself is installed on furniture wheels, the sofa will be easy to move from place to place.

What may be needed for installation

  1. Boards. Not too thick. You can navigate by the thickness of the material in the sofa itself. If the frame has fallen into disrepair, then wood is purchased for it too.
  2. Fiberboard of different thicknesses - for panels for halves and much thinner ones for foam rubber.
  3. Material for decoration, you can carefully remove the old one if it is dear to the owner as a memory.
  4. Foam rubber. It is quite thick - 50 cm, but if it was not there initially, then the fabric will have to be calculated in new sizes.
  5. Door hinges. Large size and steel, you can choose decorative ones if an open structure is intended.
  6. Jigsaw, drill, screwdriver.
  7. Fasteners
  8. Stapler.

Idea No. 4: a couch from an old sofa and table

Soft blocks from other types of sofas (euro-books, pantographs, roll-outs) are also easily dismantled and separated from the frame. If they are well preserved, these elements will be useful for making soft couches.

You can assemble the base for such a couch yourself. However, many home craftsmen prefer to choose a suitable-sized coffee table or coffee table as a wooden base.

An old rectangular table with low legs is washed, sanded and covered with fresh paint or varnish.

A soft block from an old sofa is placed on the table cover and screwed on. If its upholstery has lost its decorative effect, it is replaced with a new one. If desired, add other decorative elements - metal nails, buttons, etc.

A ready-made couch, made from an old table and sofa, can be placed in the hallway, on the loggia or even in the living room.

You can get started: stages

Bed headboard size chart.

First of all, you need to evaluate the old structure - what will have to be replaced in it? Usually these are cross bars on which the sofa actually rests, and a folding mechanism. So, you need to completely free the furniture from textiles - upholstery, foam rubber and other things. Their condition also needs to be meticulously examined. If everything is satisfactory, the fabric is put aside, the foam rubber is thrown into the trash - due to long-term use, it can no longer take the appropriate shape. Both halves of the sofa are mounted separately from each other.

Go to the tree. If the bars are still quite useful, then you can leave them. But since the task is to turn the sofa into a bed, there should be more supports - because the beds on the beds are hard. Therefore, after marking the desired length, the boards need to be sawn and screwed to the frame in the same way as bars. Their surfaces must be at the same level, otherwise all the ribs of the structure will be felt if the owner wants to lie down.

This is done on both parts. By the way, about the frame - if it is decided to leave this structure the same, then its condition should correspond to its beautiful appearance. Otherwise, before final assembly, it (the frame) is covered in the same way as the halves.

Bed frame diagram.

Next, you need to mark the fiberboard; for the bed you need to take a thick one - at least 10 mm. Its dimensions must exactly match the sectors of the sofa, but if a large double bed is planned, then the fiberboard sheet lies solidly on the mounted frame. But the problem of a small-sized apartment remains, then you need to leave the folding option.

Working with the layout mechanism. Usually on older models they become unusable due to dropped screws and discrepancies of elements. Therefore, having assessed their condition, you just need to put the structure in order - by disassembling it and screwing it to a new place. However, if it is in poor condition and the sofa will not fold, then you should replace everything with a new one.

To do this, a board is nailed to the end of the frame of the future stock, the same must be done on the other side, and new holes are drilled in them for bolts and fastenings of the mechanism. Hinges are attached to the two parts of the bed, and the structure is connected to each other.

We must immediately make a reservation - the industry is now producing quite progressive models, so you need to choose reliable and beautiful ones - if the bed is designed without armrests, then the “folding bed” will be all in sight and should have a presentable appearance. After checking the state of opening and closing and disassembling it back, you can proceed to the decorative component.

The fabric, if purchased in advance, must be cut in a new way, taking into account the thickness of the foam rubber. To do this, the required dimensions are glued to cut fiberboard sheets no more than 5 mm thick.

The foam rubber itself around the perimeter should be 2-3 mm smaller than the sheet.

Scheme for attaching the headboard to the bed.

They need to be prepared in advance. You need to be careful with glue - some chemical components can burn through the foam. Can be collected.

To do this, each part of the bed is separately attached using self-tapping screws to the wooden halves. The fasteners must go from the foam side and exactly along the frame. After installation, you need to check the functionality of the folding. Then the halves of the bed are wrapped in fabric, and it is secured with a furniture stapler. That's all, actually.

Construction of armrests. Making them is quite difficult, but possible. If the owner wants to show off his creativity, then metal or wooden elements will look great. However, you will have to tinker with the iron - for fastening you will need to use a grinder or Pobedit drills to make the necessary holes in the bed for the bolts.

Wood, in this regard, is not so capricious and gives flight to the imagination - you can cut anything with a jigsaw, and after treating the product with varnish, you can expect the admiration of guests coming to the house.

The bed will thus get an atypical look. And also, if the old armrests are satisfied with their appearance, then there is no need to be clever - screw them on with new bolts, and that’s the end of it.

New coffee table

Before you send your worn-out sofa to the landfill, inspect it carefully. A lot of useful material can be found. For example, blocks located in the lower part of the structure or drawer. In most cases they are in good condition and can be used to create new items. The base for the tabletop will be, for example, bars 50 and 70 cm long (the length can be any depending on the desired result). The height of the legs is also selected individually. All parts should be cleaned with sandpaper, and after assembling the structure, coated with varnish or paint. Using metal corners or large self-tapping screws, the base of the table is fixed, and glass, mirror or plywood can be used on top. The functional table is ready.

How to make a bed from a sofa with your own hands

Tired? Everyone knows this feeling. Irritability, fatigue and laziness most often arise due to the fact that a person did not sleep enough, or his bed was too uncomfortable. Researchers have proven that on average, each person spends 24 years sleeping in their entire life. So let's together make this time spent in sleep mode convenient and comfortable.

It is recommended to sleep exclusively on beds, because sofas are not so comfortable and do not follow the curves of your body. And if you have an old sofa that just begs to be thrown into the trash, but it’s such a shame to throw it away, then this is a great option for creating a new comfortable bed. You will learn how to make a bed from a sofa with your own hands by reading this article.

The bed consists of two posts (at the head and at the feet), equipped with legs and a directly connecting part of the bed, where the mattress is placed. Currently, when making furniture, experienced manufacturers equip beds with places to store bedding and other decorative elements, including lighting, but for sleeping this is not the main thing, the main thing is convenience and comfort.

If there is a need to purchase additional material, and given that the sofa is old, there will be such a need, then take high-quality materials:

  • wooden boards must be at least 2 cm thick so that they can support the weight of a person, and if the bed is double, then the weight of two;
  • legs - made of thick bars 5 × 5 cm, for strength and reliability of the structure;
  • It is better to take foam rubber at least five centimeters, because over time it will settle a little and you need a small reserve so that in the end you do not hit your bones against the boards of the bed.

Prepare additional tools in advance:

  • drill;
  • saw;
  • screwdrivers;
  • screwdrivers;
  • sandpaper (sandpaper);
  • self-tapping screws;
  • nuts;
  • washers;
  • screws;
  • furniture stapler with staples;
  • roulette;
  • pencil.

If you are planning to add decor to your bed, then think through every detail that you will need.

By the way, it is now very fashionable to combine colors, so you can cover the walls of the bed using leftover fabrics purchased in the store; such fabrics will cost much less.

New comfortable bed

The bed is recognized as the most comfortable sleeping place, despite its size and occupied space. A full, healthy rest, according to experts, is only possible on a bed mattress. Before you begin remodeling your sofa, you should make sure that its soft parts are preserved. They will continue to play the role of a mattress. The wooden parts will serve as material for the frame, as well as the headboard. The remaining elements can be used as decoration. You may have to additionally purchase foam rubber, timber and, if necessary, decorative textiles. Using basic tools (screwdriver, drill, saw, furniture stapler, etc.) and wild imagination allows you to create an incredible masterpiece for the bedroom.

How to make a bed from a sofa with your own hands

So, instructions for making a bed from a sofa at home.

  1. We take the old sofa and remove all the upholstery from it.
  2. We carefully check the quality of the foam installation. Under no circumstances should you make a mattress out of pieces of foam rubber, it will be uncomfortable for you; it is better to immediately purchase a high-quality piece of foam rubber from a specialized store or buy a ready-made orthopedic mattress, and leave these pieces as decoration or make pillows from them.
  3. It’s a good idea to use the sofa’s handrails and the backrest as a stand at the head of the future bed.
  4. If the back and seats of the sofa are good, then they can be connected (it would be great to put them in a large mattress pad) and used as a mattress, but only if the foam is of high quality and well preserved.
  5. Press down on the corner parts to make sure the structure is secure and reinforce such areas if necessary.
  6. Take measurements with a tape measure and mark with a pencil the places where you will install the legs.
  7. Cut the legs to the same size (you will need four of them) and sand them well.
  8. Measure the total area of the sofa where the mattress will be and cut out strips of plywood about 35-40 wide, the number of strips will depend on the width of your sofa.
  9. The outer parts at the head and at the feet also need to be measured and glued with strong glue, and secured on top with screws. To prevent the wood from bursting due to the screw, use a drill with a small drill to make a hole and pour glue into it, let it dry, and only then screw in the screw.
  10. If you want to make the side walls of the bed soft, then use old pieces of foam rubber from the sofa, place them on glue and press them to the walls, decorate them with decorative fabric or leatherette, pressed with curly decorative nails. Attach the material at the top and bottom with staples in a taut state.
  11. Use screws to securely attach the bed walls to the sleeping area.
  12. Place a mattress on top and cover with clean and fragrant bed linens. Your new bed from an old sofa is ready.

If your imagination works well, then it is advisable for you to decorate the wall at the headboard by adding curly nails, and you can also make a canopy. The wooden fragments of the bed can be cut out figuratively or burned into a pattern. A variety of decor models can be found on the Internet, for example, make a transformable bed, let your imagination run wild and don’t be afraid to experiment.

It would be nice to install such a miracle bed even in a country house; it will serve as a wonderful sleeping place for guests and for the owners themselves. As you can see, converting an old sofa into a new bed does not require much effort and large financial costs. Now your room will change beyond recognition.

Repair or alteration

Remodeling a sofa should be considered a major overhaul. The remodeling process itself can consist of three types of services: repair, restoration, reupholstery.

Repair is usually necessary if:

  • fittings wear out;
  • the transforming mechanism is broken and requires replacement;
  • defects appeared in the frame.

Restoration is needed to replace the filling and fittings, and reupholstery is usually ordered when the upholstery needs to be changed. Most often, it is necessary to remake old sofas that are not so much broken as worn out, partially or completely losing their functionality and aesthetic appearance.

Our studio specialists do an excellent job with all three designated types of services. They often make the sofa look much more luxurious than when it was purchased in a furniture showroom. A wide range of fabrics are used for upholstery, including natural and eco-leather, tapestry, etc.

A little less popular is converting an old sofa into a full-fledged bed. This can be considered a change in the functionality of the piece of furniture, since the folding mechanism is either removed completely or changed (for example, in order to create space inside for storing blankets and bed linen).

Types of folding sofa mechanisms

According to the transformation mechanism, there are several types of such furniture:

  1. Book. A simple, compact and affordable option with a spacious drawer for linen, but it cannot be placed tightly against the wall.
  2. "Click-clack." An improved analogue of the previous model - there are several locking positions.
  3. Eurobook. A reliable sofa for daily sleep, a simple layout, can be placed against the wall (only the front part can be pulled out).
  4. “Tick-tock” is a derivative of the Eurobook. The retractable part is not on rollers, but on supports that do not damage the floor covering when unfolding.
  5. Draw-out type. Even a child can unfold it, but the location of the sleeping area is quite low.
  6. Dolphin. A convenient modification for corner sofas creates a large area and has a spacious drawer for bedding.
  7. Accordion. A simple, easily transformable, seamless and wide sleeping area. The sofa is quite bulky; the springs require maintenance and load limitation.

If you sleep on the sofa occasionally, any model is suitable. The most reliable options for daily sleep are books, Eurobooks, accordion, roll-out type, Conrad.

Installation nuances

It is important not only to make the headboard correctly and accurately, but also to securely fasten it. The work can be done in three ways

The fastening method must be chosen depending on the type of product, interior features and your own preferences:

Stationary mount. The headboard is mounted to the base of the bed using self-tapping screws or screws, corners or hinges

Before installation, it is important to take into account that such a backrest is difficult to dismantle later. Add-on options. The headboard is simply placed against the bed, it is not fixed in anything, only supported by the head of the furniture

Typically, such backrests are a functional module with drawers, mirrors, and shelves. This type takes up a lot of space and is not suitable for small rooms overly filled with other furniture. Hanging headboard. With this method, the backrest is hung on the wall. Self-tapping screws and hooks are used for installation. The advantage of this type of headboard is that it can be used with any shape of bed.

Pros and cons of three-tier beds, tips for selection and placement

When choosing a mounting method, you need to consider several important points:

  1. Beds with a fixed headboard can be placed in any part of the room, even in the center, away from the walls. But the other two methods are appropriate only if the head of the furniture is adjacent to the wall.
  2. Wall-mounted and stationary installation methods are suitable for rooms of any size. Headboards can be made wide, narrow, high, low. The attached option is used for large bedrooms.
  3. If there is no or insufficient functional, useful furniture in the room, you should use an attachment, providing storage space at the head.

It’s not difficult to make a headboard for a bed yourself if you carefully study the step-by-step master class, correctly complete the drawing, stock up on high-quality materials and choose a simple design. The advantage of homemade headboards is the opportunity to improvise, as well as gaining valuable experience. It is quite possible that later even making a bed yourself will be a feasible task.

Setting up a sleeping place

A sleeping model must be purchased taking into account the dimensions of the room where it will stand and how people sleep on the sofa. If the backrest space is less than 210 cm, compact options with a forward-folding bed (such as an accordion, a roll-out mechanism, an Italian folding bed) are suitable. If there is more space, you can purchase any design - straight, angular (dolphin, eurobook).

Decide how much space the furniture takes up after layout. Measure the dimensions of the furniture according to the most protruding parts, take into account the space for the person laying out the sofa (25 cm), as well as window sills and heating devices (if they fall into their area). The sofa does not like excess heat: the wooden parts can dry out. The optimal distance to the batteries is 50 cm.

When arranging furniture, the transformation mechanism is taken into account. An accordion or a roll-out sofa does not require extra space against the wall, but a book will require additional space. To ensure that the installation of the sofa does not end up with chipped jambs and torn upholstery, correlate the dimensions of the furniture with the size of doorways and other passages.

The optimal size of a sleeping place is chosen according to the number of people who will sleep on it. For one person weighing up to 90 kg, dimensions of 80 cm by 200 cm are sufficient, for 2 people - 140 cm by 200 cm. If the weight is more, 100-120 cm width is needed for one person, for two - from 150 cm.

How to choose the right model

When buying a sofa bed, look for a flat sleeping area of comfortable density, a reliable frame, a convenient mechanism, a pleasant appearance and a reasonable price. Recommendations for selection:

  1. To estimate the power of the frame, focus on the total body weight of two people and add 20 kg, check with the seller what load the sofa is designed for. Reliability depends on the frame material. Wooden and metal frames have proven themselves well.
  2. In addition to the material and shape of the frame, the orthopedic capabilities are influenced by the quality of the mattress filler.
  3. The design can be a mesh type with squares, a snake or made of plywood (a fairly rigid option), PVC belts (they sag, the service life of such a frame is up to 7 years), a hammock (the body falls through - this is inconvenient). The optimal choice is the slats across the mattress: convex, elastic, evenly distributing the load.
  4. The mattress is made of foam rubber (dents will soon form), polyurethane foam (dense, quickly restores its shape after loading), a spring block (the spine will like it).
  5. Surface upholstery is not as important when sleeping as mattress upholstery. The material must be washable, non-electrifying, and without a pronounced synthetic odor. Criteria for choosing upholstery for the top of a sofa: strength, color fastness, abrasion, density, quality of seams, wear resistance. They are fully compatible with cotton, chenille, matting, leather and vinyl.
  6. The surface of the sleeping area is protected with a topper - a thin mattress made of dense material with loops that cushions joints, absorbs sweat and prolongs the life of the sofa. The topper adheres well to the surface, levels it, and prevents dirt and wear.
  7. Accessories. A compartment for linen is an important condition, shelves, tables, lamps, built-in bars are not for everybody.

Based on these recommendations, formulate your requirements to buy the model that is right for you. And don’t forget to sit on it, the sofa is one of the few purchases that is chosen not only with the head. Convenient choice and pleasant dreams!

Old interior items can be of high quality, long service life and attractive appearance. The upholstery may become worn or the armrests may become dirty, but they will still be reliable and durable. New stylish sofa

The most popular is, of course, updating and modernizing an old piece of furniture into a new sofa. There are a variety of methods. To begin with, just remove the covers and update the filling; you can add a layer of cotton wool or foam rubber for softness. Replacing the legs would also be a good solution. For example, you can use metal parts in a vintage style, which will add some antique style and zest. Decorating with all kinds of buttons, nails, rhinestones and other designer items will decorate the furniture and give it a special festive look. And replacing or restoring the upholstery, perhaps even painting it with special textile paint, will change the appearance of the item beyond recognition. The final stage will be decorating with bright pillows and a soft blanket.

Cottage and country house

Furniture is often reupholstered when sending things to the dacha - so, on the one hand, there is no need to buy new furniture for the summer house, on the other hand, why does the furniture at the dacha have to be peeling and with dented seats? It can be updated.

When decorating a dacha, old chairs are used to make sofas for the entrance area or kitchen.

Ordinary chairs and computer chairs are reupholstered, matching the finishing colors to the main colors of the interior - the possibilities for reupholstering furniture are very wide.

And here I would like to warn you against being overly enthusiastic about these possibilities. This is a tool, you need to know how to use it. In the photo below you can see two common mistakes.

In the photo above on the left, the color in which the chair body was painted does not match the color of the new upholstery at all, although the color itself is good, but it and the upholstery are from completely different styles. In the photo above on the right you can see an example of the wrong use of rhyme - the fabric of the chair is too similar to the fabric of the bedspread, and the two patterns clash. A plain peach fabric for the reupholstery would be just right.

I repeat - the number of chairs you use also matters if the fabric you choose is patterned. The photo above is the same case when it would be better to make some of the chairs plain.

But using different main fabrics for upholstery and one finishing fabric (combined with each main fabric) is a great idea. The photo above is just such an example - two identical armchairs are upholstered in different fabrics and trimmed on the sides with the same fabric, plus a sofa cushion is made in the same fabric.

In general, when ordering work, buy more fabric than you need for the upholstery itself - you can use it to make sofa cushions or other textile accessories that will greatly enliven the interior.

Here the sofa cushions lie on the chairs themselves, but in general they are intended for sofas. Such an unobtrusive rhyme greatly decorates the interior.

Idea No. 1: modernizing an old sofa with working mechanisms

If the old sofa has only lost its presentable appearance, but has retained a strong frame and all the mechanisms are in working order, you can simply update it. Often reupholstering is enough for this, but some craftsmen go further and transform an outdated item beyond recognition.

Updating the upholstery helps transform an unfashionable “granny” sofa into a stylish and current one. Many furniture companies offer the furniture reupholstery service, but you can also do it yourself. This will require a furniture stapler and cutting and sewing skills.

An old sofa can not only be reupholstered, but also supplemented with pillows in the color of the new upholstery. This seemingly simple accessory can completely change the interior.

Sometimes updating an old sofa doesn't require a complete reupholstery. For example, if the upholstery was partially damaged by a cat, it is enough to select a suitable material and cover the damaged areas with it.

If the usual upholstery is supplemented with various decorating techniques, you can get an absolutely unique thing from an old but strong sofa. Such additional techniques include the creation of decorative folds, carriage screeds, the design of soft rollers on the armrests, etc.

Cost of work to renew the coating of an outdated furniture product

The amount for the work is calculated individually, as it is formed on the basis of the number and current condition of objects to be restored, and the consumables chosen by the owner for use. Thus, the cost of updating chair covers starts from 500 rubles, and upholstered furniture - from 4000. An inexpensive option among the selected materials would be leatherette upholstery, costing 800 rubles and more per linear unit. m. or fabric, price per lin. m. which costs 900 rubles and more. Current prices for this service are shown in the table above. The services of on-site measurers are free. If you want to make the conditions for receiving the service even more profitable for your wallet, then take advantage of the promotions, discounts and special offers established by the company.

The way they updated their old sofa surprised everyone! DIY sofa upholstery idea

I suggest you get acquainted with my monster sofa. This is a very common model, in my opinion, it is comfortable, but there is a nuance - the upholstery. We wanted light skin, but by chance we chose fashionable eco-leather, but in fact dermantin... Everything was fine for about a year and a half, and then cracks appeared, these cracks grew into small holes, and then.... Alas and ah. So, a photo of the victim:

Replacing the sofa was not in our budget, but it was simply impossible to continue living like this. I decided to change the upholstery and replace the pillows (these ones are too hard) with regular ones: either feather or padding polyester. I advise you to choose dense padding polyester for these purposes - they hold their shape well and do not shrink.

I will partially change the upholstery; I will not touch the frame itself, because... The material there is in good shape, plus it washes well. The following will be replaced: 2 stationary parts of the sofa and one retractable part. Those that are stationary, with a tie, I will leave it, but I will do it with buttons (I have wanted it for a long time). Regarding the choice of material for upholstery: in principle, you can use the usual fabric you like, but I still advise you to choose upholstery fabric, it is much denser and has higher wear resistance, which is important in the case of a sofa. I chose chenille for the base and jacquard chenille for the decorative pillows. Sometimes they are found in regular fabric stores, but it is better to contact professional stores. There is a huge selection for absolutely every taste. The prices are very different, I advise you to pay attention to the “leftovers”, many stores have a measuring flap, where you can buy excellent materials at bargain prices. These “remnants” can be quite large in size (for example, one of the offered pieces of my fabric was 21.5 m). The fabric that I liked cost 300 rubles per meter, width 140. Here it is:

So, for work we need:

– furniture stapler (I have the most ordinary one, it costs about 600 rubles);

– staples for a stapler (6 mm seemed small to me, and 12 were too large, so I took 8 mm), 150 rubles/1000 pcs.;

– upholstery fabric (I took 9.5 meters, including delivery 3200 rubles);

– zippers on pillows;

– a tool for removing old staples (I used a screwdriver and pliers);

– buttons (at your discretion, a tight “leg” is required);

– cord for ties (I used waxed one).

First, let's disassemble the sofa:

I have 3 seats. Two with a tie, one of which is L-shaped with an internal corner, the second is rectangular, and the third is rectangular without a tie that extends (with a handle). We start with a rectangular one with ties. We remove the material that covers the reverse side, cut off the old screed and remove the old upholstery:

Next, we take the necessary measurements and cut out the required piece of fabric (in length: pillow length + pillow height * 2, the same in width) with an allowance of at least 5 cm on each side. We place the fabric face down on the floor and place part of our sofa on top of it. You need to decide how to handle the corners. Or by folding:

Or we'll waste it. I will scribble, because... if the corners are made by folding, I get the idea of working “in a hurry”, it looks like something…. Not so short. And these folds of fabric are a breeding ground for all kinds of “evil spirits.”

In order to do everything neatly, I proceed like this: I lay the fabric on the floor, put a pillow on top, bend the fabric and secure it with masking tape, so that the corners remain outside:

  1. Boards. It’s better not to take ones that are too thick. Be guided by the thickness of the material from which the sofa itself is made. If the frame itself has become unusable, you will have to purchase high-quality wood for its restoration.
  2. Wood fiber cloth of different thicknesses. It will be needed to make shields of both halves and secure the foam rubber.
  3. Materials for decoration. Of course, you can carefully remove the old coating if you find it difficult to part with it.
  4. Thick foam. But if it wasn’t on the sofa before, then when purchasing fabric you will have to take into account new measurements taking into account the placement of foam rubber.
  5. Door hinges. It is better if they are steel and large enough. If the design of the bed is supposed to be open, then it is better to give preference to decorative options.
  6. Screwdriver, drill, electric jigsaw.
  7. Stapler.
  8. Fasteners.

Assembling garden furniture

Sofas can be made from materials left over from used, disassembled furniture. Door leaves from an old cabinet are used to make the base and back. The old coating and dirt are removed from the sashes and cleaned with a grinding machine. Then paint is applied or veneer is glued. One leaf is equipped with supports. The second part is placed under the back. The backrest is attached to the base at a certain angle. The upholstered part of the furniture is made from a piece of foam rubber covered with dense material and covered with upholstery fabric on top.

Another option is a sofa made from pallets. Production begins with pallets, they are sanded, primed and painted. The cutting of two bars is carried out at a certain angle.

The back is made from prepared sheets of plywood or MDF panels. Having assembled the frame, it is installed on supports. Blanks for backs and seats are made from foam rubber. The blanks are covered with upholstery fabric and stapled to the frame. This is how they make upholstered furniture with their own hands from easily accessible material.

How to make a folding bed out of a sofa yourself?

We will tell you how to convert a sofa into a folding bed. The work will take you a lot of time, but the result will really surprise you, of course, if you do everything correctly, efficiently, and carefully.

You will need to perform the following manipulations in the given sequence:

  • First of all, evaluate the already outdated design to understand what needs to be replaced. As a rule, the most problems arise with the cross bars that hold the sofa and the folding mechanism.
  • Remove furniture from upholstery and foam. Inspect them carefully; if the fabric is still suitable for use, then put it aside, but it is better to throw away the foam rubber, since over the years of use it has definitely lost its required shape.
  • Dismantle the halves of the sofa separately from each other.
  • Now move on to the wood. If the bars have not dried yet, then leave them. But given that the bed should have more supports, it is necessary to mark the required length of the boards, saw them, and screw them to the frame in the same way as the bars.

Important! Make sure that they are at the same level and there are no stiffening ribs. Do this to both sides of the sofa.

  • Mark the fiberboard - for the bed you will need material at least 10 mm thick.

Important! Note that the dimensions of the slabs coincide with the sectors of the old sofa, but if you want to make a double bed, then you should lay the sheet all over the finished frame.

  • If you choose the folding version, you will also have to work with the folding mechanism. As a rule, on old furniture it becomes unusable due to discrepancies between elements and fallen screws. After assessing the condition of the fasteners, put them in order, disassemble them and screw them into a new place.
  • Nail a board from the end to the frame of the future bed, do the same on the other side, drill new holes in them for fastening the mechanism and bolts. Attach hinges to both sides of the bed to connect them together.
  • Check how well the structure opens and closes, then take it apart again. Cut the upholstery fabric in a new way, taking into account the thickness of the foam. To do this, glue the required dimensions to the cut fiberboard sheets.
  • Prepare the foam in advance. Please note that it should be 2-3 mm smaller than the sheet around the perimeter.
  • Now separately attach each part of the new bed using self-tapping screws to the wooden halves. The fasteners must be located exactly along the frame on the foam rubber side.
  • Check the folding functionality. Wrap the bed halves in new fabric and secure with a furniture stapler.
  • To make armrests, just use wooden or metal elements. Only you will have to work more with the iron, because it is attached using a grinder or a Pobedit drill. Wood is less capricious and offers a wider range of imagination. The material is given the desired shape, and the top is coated with varnish.

As it turned out, remaking a bed with your own hands from a worn-out old sofa does not involve performing any complex operations, using specialized equipment and expensive materials. As a result, you will get an atypical looking bed, quite suitable for sleeping and relaxing.

Comfortable sofa

Drawing of a frame for a sofa.

There is an interesting option to make a sofa using a couch or using a bed element such as a metal armored mesh. For this you may need the following materials:

  • wooden beams;
  • foam;
  • hammer and wallpaper nails;
  • drill;
  • furniture screws and screwdriver;
  • sewing materials and upholstery fabrics;
  • accessories (zippers of different sizes) for a cover, 21 cm long, and 3 zippers of 7 cm each for pillows;
  • metal mesh and corner.

Take the following approximate dimensions of the future sofa: height - 90 cm, full width - 95 cm, width of the soft part - 80 cm, length - 185 cm.

Sofa assembly option.

To make the frame of the product, you need to connect 6 wooden boards, 1500 mm long, with three vertical boards, 660 mm long, using screws. The corner connector should be made 20x20x190 mm.

The top edge of the base should be 20mm below the top edge board. The support bars must be secured to the back and behind the front panel. They will be the load-bearing parts of the seat.

The back itself must be fixed to the base very firmly, using thick metal corners. Choose its inclination yourself, as it is convenient for you.

After this, you can fix the mesh from the bed to the wooden base using metal brackets. It will serve as a kind of support grid on the frame of the sofa to hold the seat cushions.

You can also glue several transverse beams onto the longitudinal ones. This will add reliability.

The foam rubber is cut to the specified size of the back of the sofa, the main thing is that it is no thinner than 15 cm.

Make two such blanks. They will need to be sheathed with the chosen fabric and connected with a zipper. Mattresses are attached to the structure with decorative tape. Upholstery material and Velcro are suitable for its manufacture. One end of it is attached with small nails to the frame, and the other to the cover. Next comes the turn of the pillows. Covers for them are sewn from the same material, using zippers and foam rubber. As a result, you should have 3 pillows.

  • At the second stage you will need an angle grinder. Use it to saw through the connecting springs and remove them. As a result, the mattress will be divided into two identical parts.
  • At the third stage, cover each half of the future sofa with fabric.

Important! Make sure that the “insides” do not stick out.

  • In the fourth step, remove the common backrests at the head and legs, carefully sawing them in half. Then lay them on the slats, closer to each other. It is recommended to use the strongest parts of the bed to form the bottom.
  • At the fifth stage, place half of the mattress on the resulting structure, and place the second against the wall to create a comfortable backrest.
