Every person who has ever had a dog knows how much they love to play. They love to run and always need to chew on something. Of course, the easiest way is to purchase special toys for dogs in the store. But they are often quite expensive. Plus, you could be wasting money if your dog quickly ruins the toy or doesn't like it. If you want to save money, try making it yourself. To do this, you will only need available things and some free time.
From a tennis ball and a sock
This is the easiest option for making a toy for your pet. To create it, you only need an old sock and a tennis ball. Dogs love to chew things, so this toy will definitely interest them. You can throw it and ask your pet to fetch it. Of course, you don't have to put the ball in your sock to play. But this way it will be more interesting for the dog to tinker with the sock, so the toy will be larger. It will also be easier to notice, for example, in the grass or on asphalt.
Take a large sock so that the ball fits comfortably in it. You should have some room left for him to roll around. Tie the sock in a knot to prevent the ball from falling out. And the toy is ready!
Remember that it is important to use clean items. The smell left on the sock may encourage your pet to chew on your shoes or get into poorly closed clothing closets. Choose a product made of thick fabric. There should be no holes in it, otherwise the dog will quickly tear the toy.
Fabric ball: antique toy
Monday, November 25, 2022
Toys made of fabric are an invention far from our time: it is known that, for example, patchwork balls were used as toys and sports equipment back in Ancient Egypt. In addition, among some nations, balls were considered a magical object used for sacred rituals: each nation put its cultural values into this simple toy. How to sew a fabric ball using old patterns - this is what we will discuss in today’s publication.
There are a great many ways to sew a fabric ball with your own hands - steppe peoples, for example, collected hair from livestock, rolled it into a ball and threw it into hot water; in Chukotka, bag-shaped balls were sewn from genuine leather and stuffed with reindeer hair; the traditional Khakass ball consisted of two circles of leather, soaked in water to give them a rounded shape, stuffed with sheep's wool and sewn in the center; Well, there are so many ancient Russian methods of making patchwork balls that it would be very difficult to list them all.
Traditional Russian ball
In Rus', colored patchwork balls usually served as the very first toy for a child still lying in the cradle. A simplified version of such a ball (which can be called a ball very conditionally) was made from multi-colored scraps using the technique of making pompoms - long strips of fabric were placed in the center of the rope and its ends were connected into a knot, obtaining a kind of “shaggy” ball. More painstaking work lay ahead of those needlewomen who preferred to sew balls of a traditional round shape from several triangular wedges. We select the flaps according to color and similarity of texture and, if necessary, iron them thoroughly. We make a pattern from thick paper - you can use the ready-made drawing below, or you can draw it yourself. To do this, draw an equilateral triangle of the required size (depending on the desired size of the ball), after which we connect all the vertices with smooth arcuate lines - you will need 8 such blanks. The seam allowance is 0.5 cm. From the wrong side we sew the first four patches, getting half a ball in the form of a hemisphere. Then we sew the remaining flaps in the same way, tracking the beautiful alternation of colors and patterns of our blanks. We sew both halves of the ball together so that the seams match, and leave about 2 cm unsewn so that the ball can be stuffed with filler. When the toy takes on a beautiful round shape, we sew up the hole with a hidden seam, and decorate the connecting seams between the flaps with braid. If you plan to hang the ball somewhere, then leave a loop for this.
Ball made from wedges
Another way to sew a nicely shaped patchwork ball is to use a four-piece pattern. Learning how to make such drawings is also useful because the same technology is used to sew the heads of soft toys - dolls and animals, made in a vintage style. So, to make a wedge we use the following algorithm:
- draw a circle of the required size (depending on the desired size of the future ball);
- from the center of the circle we draw a radius and a vertical line;
- divide the radius in half with a vertical line;
- extend this line in both directions beyond the circle by an amount equal to the distance from the center of the circle to the middle of the radius (i.e. AA'=VG=BB');
- to the right and left the radius is also lengthened so that DV = BE;
- the extreme points A'EB' and A'DB' are connected by arcuate lines, obtaining a wedge
We cut out four wedges and sew them together, leaving a small hole for stuffing the ball. There is another option for making balls from wedges, and the number of such “slices” can be any:
Patchwork rattle balls
Many Russian monasteries led a very rational lifestyle and therefore never threw away scraps of fabric and old clothes, making rattle balls and discarded toys from scraps. The filling for such crafts was usually dried moss, which was collected during the summer and dried in a shady place. so that the plant stems do not become fragile, but retain their elasticity. To make such an interesting patchwork ball, you will need 12 pads: we select beautiful scraps of fabric with the same texture and sew square bags from them (4 x 4 cm, 5 x 5 cm - whichever size you like best). Then the bags are turned right side out and stuffed tightly with moss (the bundle is tied crosswise with thread to keep its shape). Instead of moss, you can use any other filler, the main thing is to distribute it evenly throughout the bag so that it fills the corners well. Then the remaining side of the workpiece is sewn tightly. The blank pads are sewn from the wrong side, first in 4 pieces, and then connecting the upper and lower parts of the ball, sewing the remaining four blanks between them. In order for the ball to simultaneously serve as a rattle, before sewing the last pad, a container with dry peas or pebbles rolled up from birch bark or cardboard is placed inside the ball. The seams between the parts of the ball are decorated with braid or cord.
Eskimo patch ball
The traditional Eskimo game ball (ankak) is usually sewn from scraps of soft leather. Once upon a time this ball had ritual significance and represented a model of the Universe. With the help of such balls, rituals of meeting the Sun were performed, so traditionally the ankak was sewn from skin as black as night, on which the sun, moon, and stars are present. To sew such a ball, you will need 12 parts: two circles (top and bottom of the ball), four squares rounded at the edges (sides), four short strips (decorative elements of the sides) and two long strips (framing the top and bottom round blanks).

Multifaceted patchwork balls
Such balls look very impressive both as a children's toy and as a decoration for the New Year tree, but care is required when sewing the parts together, otherwise the shape of the toy may be greatly distorted. Pentagons are cut out from scraps selected by color and texture, which are sewn together in three stages:
Eastern volumetric ball
The ball is sewn using the Japanese temari ball technology.
It is assembled from 12 sectors filled with padding polyester. The sector is sewn from 2 quarter circles (24 pcs.), forming the sides, and a petal - its outer side (12 pcs.). The parts are sewn from the wrong side; it is better to leave the hole for stuffing closer to the pointed tip of the sector. Assembling the ball takes place in three stages. First, let's connect 4 sectors at the tops. Then we sew them along the edges of the petals so that they form a cross. Now let's form the middle belt of the ball. Let's connect 4 sectors by the edges of the petals, and sew their tops in the center - we get a circle. Let's combine it with the “cross”, sewing the tops in the center, and the edges of the sector petals on the outside. The remaining 4 sectors need to be sewn in turn: first - at the edges of the petals, then - at the tops. The result was an interesting ball - a kind of patchwork puzzle. The ingenious design of the patchwork ball also has a figurative beginning, reminiscent of a colorful inflorescence or constellation. Tags: Toys, Fine crafts, Useful practical skills, Retro patterns
Toy made from an old towel
Dogs love to play tug. You can buy a special rope for this, or you can make it yourself. For this you only need an old towel. Make 2 cuts along the length so that you have three flaps. Weave them into a braid. It is important not to completely cut off the towel scraps. They should be attached to one of the edges of the product so that the toy does not quickly fall apart. The flaps must have the same width. When you have braided the braid, secure the end by tying a tight knot. The toy is ready.

Use a clean towel. The unpleasant smell can scare the dog away, and it will not play with such a braid. Choose the size of the towel based on the size of your pet. Be sure to remove all tags, tags, and other foreign objects that could injure your dog's mouth.
Toy made from a plastic bottle and an old sock
This toy is suitable for those dogs who love plastic squeakers. To make it you will need a plastic bottle and an old sock. Select their size based on the height and weight of your dog. The bottle must be thoroughly rinsed so that no unpleasant odor remains on it. Remove the label and remove the plastic ring and cap from the neck. They can injure the dog's mouth. Avoid using damaged bottles with holes to prevent your pet from cutting himself. Squeeze all the air out of it. Once you have crushed the bottle, place it in your sock. Tie a tight knot at the base of the sock. Show your dog that the bottle makes a grinding sound when squeezed to get him interested.
How to choose the right model
As soon as there is a desire to purchase such a simulator, a lot of questions arise: which company’s product is better to choose, from what material, what is the optimal size and weight, where to buy? The best manufacturers offer a huge selection of popular models at different prices. But before making a final decision, you need to read the recommendations of experts, carefully study the characteristics and functions of the product, pay attention to reviews, ratings, and review the proposed options.
According to buyers, it does not matter how much the exercise machine costs or what its brand is. Sometimes the price depends on the popularity of the models. However, the selection criteria must be different. What should you pay special attention to in order to avoid mistakes when choosing? Let's look at the main indicators:
Name | Description |
Material | It is of no small importance, since the projectile should feel pleasant to the hands and have an excellent texture that provides good grip. |
Dimensions | The main range is from 2 to 4 kg. Trained people use heavier products - 8 - 10 kg. From a medical point of view, developing endurance is not the main function of the simulator. It is used more for muscle development and physical activity. |
Quality | Mainly depends on the material used to make it. If the material is of high quality, then the product will be reliable and durable. |
It is also worth keeping in mind that balls come in the following types:
- Made from PVC. Metal shavings act as filler. Can also be filled with sand.
- Upholstery material – leatherette, filling – rubber crumb. Removable upholstery allows you to replace the filling with a new one, reduce or increase the volume of the product.
- With gel filler. Area of application: throws.
- Exercise machine equipped with handles. It is highly durable, the upholstery is rubber, the volume is from 1 to 10 kg. Used instead of weights or dumbbells, it perfectly pumps up muscles.
Which equipment is better to buy depends on a person’s preferences and his desire to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The best exercise machines are expensive, they are branded, as they are made by the world’s best manufacturing companies, which constantly introduce their fans to new products, make ratings of quality products, and give purchasing advice.
You can buy the medicine ball you like at specialized retail outlets, or order the product online in an online store. But first, it is advisable to familiarize yourself with the advantages and disadvantages of the projectile, pay attention to customer reviews and make the right decision.
Toy made from a tennis ball and old rope
Another option for a toy for playing tug. To create it you will need an old tennis ball and rope. It should be thick and strong enough to prevent the dog from injuring its mouth while playing. Its length depends on the size of the pet. A rope about 24-46 cm long is best.

To make such a toy, you need to make 2 holes in the tennis ball on opposite sides. The easiest way to drill them is with a drill. But if you don't have one, you can make holes with a screwdriver or a thin knife. Secure the ball to prevent injury to your hands. Then insert a rope through the holes and tie knots on both sides of the ball so that it does not fall out during play.
How to tie a sox (footbag)
Still, it's great to have a teenage son! From him I always learn about various exciting youth hobbies. For example, until recently I had no idea about the existence of an object with the funny name “sox”. However, thanks to my son, I was able to not only find out what it is, but also knit sox with my own hands .
The story of my craft began with the fact that my son asked me to knit him a small, palm-sized sox . When asked how such a ball would be used, I received rather vague explanations about performing some tricks with the ball. Therefore, in order to finally understand what exactly I had to knit, I had to turn to the Internet for help.
It turned out that the name “socks”, which immediately seemed very funny to me because of the association with the English “socks”, that is, “socks”, is actually directly related to socks, since many novice players make sox balls from socks stuffed with cereal. And such a ball is used for freestyle footbags - those same spectacular tricks that my son tried to tell me about. Accordingly, socks are also sometimes called footbags. There is also a simpler way to play sox, when several participants throw the ball to each other.
Re-sew a regular soft toy
Dogs love regular soft toys. But all owners know how quickly they tear them. As a result, the filler ends up scattered throughout the room. Therefore, you can remake the toy in advance. Just open it up and remove all the filler. Then stitch up the incision. Such a toy will last longer because the dog will not chew it up trying to get to the filler. It is also recommended to remove all buttons, snaps and other small parts. The dog may accidentally swallow them. Remember that a part that gets into the respiratory tract can cause the animal to suffocate.
Knitted socks
Several years ago, young people developed a new hobby - playing sox. In foreign countries this is called a footbag. The essence of the game is to stuff a small knitted ball with your feet and other parts of the body, except your hands, and pass it to other players. Socks come in a variety of colors, so you can always find something to suit your taste. To have your own unique ball, you can easily knit it with your own hands.
To create a sox we will need:
- threads. Since the footbag is small, you will need a very small skein of thread. You should not choose wool threads; it is better to give preference to cotton or synthetic yarns.
- hook. The optimal hook size is 3-4 mm.
- pin or marker. We will use them to secure the beginning of the knitted row so as not to get lost.
- scissors and needle and thread. They will come in handy when finishing the job.
- filler. As a filler, you can use cereals (rice, buckwheat, peas), small plastic balls or bullets from a toy gun. In our case, the juice will be filled with peas. However, it is worth remembering that it is not recommended to wet the soda with cereal, since buckwheat and peas will quickly get wet, which will ruin the whole game.
The process of making sox.
First of all, you need to knit 5 air loops. This amount is optimal, because if you make them more, you will end up with a too large circle through which the filler will spill out.
When we pull the end of the thread, we get a small circle, which will be the beginning of the sox.
Then, in the loop where the hook is, we hook a pin and begin to knit single crochets to the marked loop.
After this we begin to add loops. To do this, we make two single crochets in each 2 loops of the previous row. We knit to the pin.
Bottle of dog biscuits
Sometimes owners don't have enough time to play with their dog. You don't have to leave her alone. You can quickly make a fun toy for your pet that will keep him occupied. It will also stimulate his intelligence, which is beneficial for small puppies. To create this toy, you will need a dog treat and a plastic bottle with a wide neck. The best ones are those in which milk is poured.

Choose a healthy treat that your dog won't refuse. It should be small so that the pet can get it out of the bottle on its own. You can choose sugar-free cookies or cut boiled meat into small pieces. Place a treat in a bottle (about 10-12 pieces) and give it to your dog.
Exercises with a medicine ball
If you visit a sports complex, the trainer will select the appropriate option for you, tell you what exercises should be done with a medicine ball, and monitor their implementation. But if you don’t have a lot of free time and you have to do health improvement at home, then there are several simple exercises that even an unprepared person can master. They will help develop speed, strength, endurance, and agility. They can be done to rhythmic music. A standard workout contains the following exercises:
- We sit on our knees, our back is straight. We take the ball in our hands and lift it above our heads. We try to move our arms back as much as possible.
- The ball is in your hands outstretched in front of you. In this case, the elbows are slightly bent. Using springy movements, we try to reach the back with the ball.
- We take the exercise machine by the handle and try to hold it as long as possible with our arm extended forward. We change hands one by one.
- We sit on one knee, stretching the other leg to the side. The ball is in the raised hand. We bend towards the extended leg, then in the opposite direction.
- Lie on your back, place the apparatus between your ankles. Raise your legs to a height of 25-30 cm from the floor and try to keep them in this state for as long as possible.
- Using a medicine ball to support your arms, do a few push-ups.
It is possible to get a positive result only if you perform each exercise at least 10 – 12 times in a row.
Cut up a tennis ball and hide your dog's favorite treat in it.
The treat can be hidden not only in a plastic bottle, but also in an old tennis ball. Cut it with a knife, making a small hole measuring 5-7 cm. Fill the ball with small pieces of your dog's favorite treat. Then give the finished toy to your pet. Not all animals immediately understand where the tasty smell is coming from and how to extract it from the ball. In this case, the owner must show the dog how to get it.

Sweet potato toy
To create this toy, all you need is old rope and a sweet potato. It must first be cut into thin slices and baked in the oven. It is important not to add salt, sugar, pepper or any other seasonings. The potatoes need to be baked for 5 hours to dry them out. Then make small holes in the slices and place them on the rope, tying a knot after each piece. This toy will keep the dog occupied for a long time, which will spend a lot of time trying to get all the pieces of treats to eat.

A treat for hot days
Like people, dogs have a hard time withstanding heat, especially if they have thick, dense fur. In such weather it is difficult for them to run and show any activity. But you can brighten up their day if you prepare them a cooling treat. You will need: an ice tray, dog biscuits, and beef or chicken broth.
First, pour chilled broth into the ice holes. Leave it in the refrigerator to freeze a little. You should end up with a thick but not completely set mixture. Then insert a dog biscuit into each hole. The broth should completely cover it so that the dog cannot quickly get the treat. Then return the tray to the refrigerator and leave it there until the broth has completely set.
Be careful not to make broth cubes too small for large breed dogs to avoid risk of them swallowing them and choking on them. You can pour the treats into plastic cups if you don't have a tray with large holes.

How to make juice with your own hands?
1. The simplest one is from a sock. Take a sock. Better clean. We cut off the part where the fingers are, capturing 7-8 centimeters. Add buckwheat. Sew it up. Ready. All about everything in about 20-30 minutes. Having made one sox and played with it for a couple of hours, you will see the weak points.
2. Crochet from nylon (very hard, but absolutely indestructible) or floss/iris (multi-colored, soft, but will tear quickly).
Instructions for beginner knitters:
First, 4 loops in a circle, then from 4x-8, 8-16, 6-32, then we knit 4 from the 5th, make 2 loops (add) then from every 6th you make 2 loops until there are 56 loops in the circle there will be 12 rows one on top, and then we add according to the inverse formula.
3. Leather panel. You take soft leather/leatherette (no more than 0.5 mm thick), cut out 12 equal pentagons (12-panel) or 12 pentagons and 20 hexagons (32-panel, sewn like a soccer ball), after which the whole mess is carefully sewn together . A little advice - all the panels down to the very last (3 seams should remain unsewn) need to be sewn from the inside, then carefully turn it out and even more carefully sew it up to the end (it is best to fill in the stuffing when only one seam remains unsewn). Then the footbag (you can’t call it a sox anymore - the tongue doesn’t turn) will turn out smooth, round, without visible seams. If it’s a little uneven, it doesn’t matter, literally after a couple of good games it will warm up and become simply perfect. Advantages: the skin will not wear out for a long time, very comfortable. Disadvantages: it is very long and difficult to do (it takes me 3-4 hours) and sometimes the threads on the seams break, but they can be sewn up again (threads are not leather, this is not a problem).
