What can you make from an old coat?

Share on social media networks:

Every woman has things in her closet that you can already wear, but it’s a shame to throw them away. And most have a drape coat that looks great, but, unfortunately, is hopelessly out of fashion. What can be done from an old coat so that it is useful and beautiful, how can it be remade into a fashionable product? There are a lot of options and ideas. Which one should you implement? — It all depends only on your desire, experience in needlework and availability of free time. We'll talk about this in our article.

New toys made from old sweaters: the creativity of Amanda Katzenmeyer

Amanda Katzenmeyer lives and works in the USA, in the state of Colorado. Actually, her creativity began with the fact that she felt sorry for throwing away old, but still beloved sweaters. After all, they are so warm, fluffy and still beautiful!

“I felt guilty throwing away old jumpers,” says Amanda.

The craftswoman believes that in this way she contributes to the recycling movement, which is now very popular in the States.

Amanda loves her toys very much and gives them unusual names. For example, “Sweet Poppy Cat.” Her cats are really cute, but even more I like the creatures for which you can’t immediately find a name. They remind me of the character from the movie “Labyrinth”, whose name was Ludo. Remember such a shaggy, fanged, but kind giant?

Amanda Katzenmeyer often photographs her pets together with Barbara Andersen's cutest mice.

Apparently, their guys are friends with each other.

Now I’ll probably also think more than once about whether to throw out my old sweater :)

Why is handicraft important?

Remaking old things is not that difficult, if only you wanted to. An old drape coat can give life to a dozen new and useful things. In this case, you will have to use your imagination. In addition, if you have something made with your own hands, you will be sure that you will definitely not see anything like it from anyone else.

And the process of needlework itself has a lot of positive qualities:

  • The nervous system calms down;
  • Depression disappears;
  • Free time is well spent.

Button panel

When sorting things out and finding a bag or box with a large number of different buttons, do not rush to say goodbye to them. It was not in vain that our mothers and grandmothers collected them so painstakingly. They are unlikely to be used for their intended purpose, but you can make a beautiful panel out of them with your own hands.

You will need:

  • buttons,
  • canvas,
  • brown paint,
  • glue, brush.

Step-by-step master class:

  1. We draw the trunk and branches of a tree on the canvas and paint them brown.
  2. We make a lush crown by gluing button leaves.

Instead of canvas, you can use ordinary thick cardboard covered with decorative fabric. The design can also be different according to your choice.

Important! To ensure that the strips of material are even, you can stick tape on the coat and then cut the material into strips. There will be no traces of tape left on the material.

  1. After cutting a significant number of strips, you can begin to assemble the carpet.
  2. Using a glue gun, glue is applied to different parts of the strip, and then it is rolled into a roll. Its shape can be any.
  3. When several rolls of different sizes and shapes are ready, we apply them to each other.
  4. Strips of drape are also glued into the void between them.

sleeveless shirt

Sleeveless vests are very popular this season. Let's learn how to make a vest out of a coat with your own hands. To do this you need to prepare:

  • Coat;
  • Scissors;
  • Threads and sewing needles;
  • Sewing machine.

To get a beautiful new thing, do the following:

  5. We chop off the resulting part with needles and trim off the excess fabric.
  6. When hemming the edges of cut sleeves, you must ensure that no folds form on the remaining lining material, otherwise the product will look unsightly.
  7. The seams are carefully ironed.

At this point, the production of the vest is completed, you can safely put it on and go outside.

Rug made from old leather belts

Making a mat from belts is very simple.

For this you will need:

  • 10-12 natural or faux leather belts
  • awl or leather punch
  • twine or string.

First make the belts the same length by cutting off the buckle. Make holes along the edges of the straps at a distance of approximately 2-3 cm from each other and 0.5 cm from the edge. Sew them together using thin hemp rope. The order of pulling the rope is arbitrary; you can sew along the belts, across, crosswise between the holes. Metal staples instead of rope will also look very stylish.

What to sew from an old coat? 10 ideas to choose from

If you look, then in every woman’s house there will definitely be good old things that have gone out of fashion. No one has been wearing them for a long time, but it’s a shame to throw them away. With a little imagination and minimal handicraft skills, they can be given a second life. It would seem, what would an old coat be good for? It turns out that you can sew at least 10 useful and necessary items from it, saving your family budget in addition. You can be sure that if you make something with your own hands, no one else will have one like it.

This is interesting: Balenciaga sneakers without laces

When starting to sew, you should first prepare the material for work, i.e. wash the coat and iron it. Then choose one or more ideas for inspiration and start creating.

Vest

The simplest example of what can be sewn from an old coat is a vest, which is fashionable this season. To sew it, we first rip off the sleeves and lining of the coat, mark the armholes, and add a finishing stitch. The thread can be of a contrasting color or to match the product. After trying on, the length of the product can be shortened or left the same. Well, that's all, the vest is ready, wear it with pleasure!

Jacket

If you don't wear a coat just because it's no longer fashionable, then we advise you to remake it into a more practical jacket. It can be single or double breasted, with buttons and a zipper, with a turn-down or stand-up collar. The classic length is to the waist or slightly above the hips. The process of converting a coat into a jacket is not that complicated. It is enough to decide on the required length, cut off the excess material and bend the product along the bottom line. Using acrylic paints, the jacket can be decorated with a fashionable print, add lace or patch pockets.

Winter skirt

An old drape coat can easily be turned into a stylish skirt for the winter. If you have a ready-made pattern, you can sew it literally in the evening. It is unlikely that the width of the coat will be enough for a flared skirt, but a straight skirt of a classic cut, as well as a wrap skirt, are considered basic models of any wardrobe.

Cut off the top part of the coat along with the sleeves, remove the buttons and lining. We lay out the pattern on the remaining part of the material without changing the direction of the pattern. We cut out the front and back panels, leaving 1.5 cm for allowances. We sew the skirt along the seams, attach the belt, and try it on.

Bag

They say that a woman without a bag is like without hands. It is even desirable that there be several of them, in different shapes and styles, for all occasions. One bag is roomy enough to stuff bread, milk and an elephant into. Another bag, representative - for work, securities and cosmetics. And the third, with whom you are not ashamed to go out into the world, taking with you only the essentials.

So, a “going out” bag can be made from a coat that has long gone out of fashion. This accessory will definitely be exclusive. To make the bag even more attractive, you can add pieces of fur, leather, and beads as decoration.

Slippers

House slippers in one hour. Is this real? Quite if you prepare in advance for the creative process. The bottom layer is the sole of an old slipper or a felt insole, for the inner layer - 2-3 layers of drape, with felt on top. All blanks are connected and stitched crosswise twice on a machine so that the layers do not move apart. Then the edges are processed.

For the top of the slippers, 2 layers of material and decoration in the form of a decorative strip are enough. The top and bottom of the product are pinned together and stitched along the edge. Homemade slippers are quite comfortable and inexpensive.

Beret

When it's already cold outside and it's time to put on a hat, many women think about what to wear in the new season. The beret is a universal thing. And this is not yesterday. A fashionable accessory in the “a la france” style will add sophistication and sophistication to your look. But what to do if you can’t find a ready-made beret? Sew it yourself. An unnecessary drape coat will be an excellent help for work. Even with minimal experience you can build a beautiful thing from it. And not just one.

We prepare 3 parts according to the pattern: the bottom, the side and the chest (a strip of fabric around the head). Don't forget about the lining. It is cut using the same patterns. We sew the details of the side to the bottom, and already to it, a strip of fabric folded in half (cushion).

Toys for children

When you work together with your child, you can make a lot of delightful toys from scraps of fabric from an old coat that will become the most precious to him. Soft toys can be sewn even without a pattern. It is enough to draw Peppa Pig, Smeshariki, a cat, a dog on a folded fabric, cut out both parts and sew them with a buttonhole stitch. If you fill the toy with padding polyester inside, you will get a cute and funny character. An applique, buttons or beads are sewn in place of the nose, eyes and mouth.

Chair covers

In the winter season, for some reason, even in a warm apartment, it is not very pleasant to sit on a chair without a cover; it seems cold. It's quite easy to fix the situation by using an old coat. Sewing does not require special knowledge and skills. It is enough to measure the sides of the stool along the perimeter and cut out a square or rectangle with seam allowance. After this, the edges of the product are sewn at the corners and turned inward. You can insert an elastic band into the case or sew on ribbon ties, or decorate the top with applique or embroidery.

Pet bedding/pillow

An unnecessary drape coat will make excellent bedding for dogs and cats. True, if you don’t have a sewing machine at home, you’ll have to work with your hands. But the result is worth it, because the pet will rest in comfort. Whether the animal sleeps curled up or with its paws outstretched, likes to look around or is looking for protection, depending on this, the shape of the pillow and the height of the sides of the bed are selected.

Cut out 2 round, rectangular or square pieces of the desired size, sew them from the inside out along the edges, but not all the way, and turn them outside. The filling for the bedding can be foam rubber or padding polyester.

If you wish, you can also sew a house from an old coat, as in the photo above.

Rug

It can be cut from an old coat in one single piece or sewn from different pieces. Who likes what. A fluffy rug assembled from many narrow strips looks interesting. Pile height is optional. A plastic construction mesh is used as a base, where a strip of fabric folded in half is pulled into each cell with a hook and a knot is made. And thus, step by step, the entire volume is filled. Of course, you need to be patient.

As you can see, even an old coat can be used if desired. This is an excellent material for teaching children handicrafts. A thing made with our own hands always evokes a feeling of respect and pride, proving that we can do a lot.

Positive characters from old things. Crafts and toys made from sweaters.

Of course, sewing toys is very interesting. You can make different animals, for example, kittens, fish, owls or even dinosaurs, make dolls, snowmen, make a cartoon character (Peppa Pig) or your favorite character in the picture come true. It's especially fun to repurpose old things. So you can sew a bunny, a chipmunk, and a mouse with your own hands. Any thing will “receive” a new, second life. You won’t even think that before it was a sweater, skirt or jacket. By the way, such a craft can be brought to school for a project or to kindergarten, or maybe to a competition.

In the closet of almost any female representative, it is possible to find a coat that has long gone out of fashion, but looks as if it was bought quite recently. As a result, a dilemma arises: throw it away or update it? Of course, the first option is much simpler, but to implement the second you need to be creative and use your imagination.

To update your outerwear option, add fashionable prints to it or alter the silhouette, shorten the length of the sleeves, or add acrylic paints that are fashionable this season.

In addition, there are many options for other ideas that can actually be implemented from the fabric of an old coat, for example, making a bag or a bath mat, cushion covers for stools, or making a children's coat. If there are pets in the house, then you can sew clothes for four-legged animals from an old coat.

Clothes for children or toys.

Is there a baby in your house? Then you can repurpose your clothes into clothes for your baby. And also make a headband, hat, head scarf or slippers for the house.

Old clothes make wonderful dresses for dolls

New clothes

The amount of materials from an old unnecessary coat is quite enough to sew a new version of clothing.

Baby coat

You can easily sew an exclusive coat for your child. The model can be decorated with sewn pockets.

Important: to make the pockets more durable, it is recommended to stitch them twice.

To sew a children's coat, use the lining of an old coat. Its size should be slightly larger than the finished product. The result will be more comfortable wearing of the product after washing, since the fabric can shrink.

Vest/tank top

A homemade vest made from an old coat will help add some zest to your look. This type of clothing has been gaining popularity lately. Moreover, it is quite simple to make. To do this you will need:

  • coat;
  • scissors. Large and sharp, which will easily cut the material;
  • sewing machine with a set of accessories (threads, needles).

The algorithm of work is as follows: first you need to shorten the length of the sleeve to 5-7 centimeters. After cutting out the material of the remaining sleeve, you need to remove the lining. The remaining material should be folded so that it follows the line of the shoulder. In order to end up with an even finish on the edge of the material without unnecessary lines, it is important to pin the edge of the garment with sewing pins. By carefully stitching the product, you get a new vest.

The length of the product can also be shortened. While wearing this type of clothing, it is allowed to decorate it with various brooches. This will make the image much more interesting.

Tip: if the product has a classic collar, then you can wear various thin scarves with such a vest. This will add sophistication to your look.

This type of clothing can also be easily made from an old coat. At the same time, it is possible to tailor different versions of the skirt: you can sew it with slits, or you can leave it whole. It all depends on the length of the product and personal preferences.

The length of the skirt can be left the same as the coat.

To sew a skirt, you need to cut the old item into two parts, the lower of which will be turned into a new version of the garment. And from the upper part it is quite possible to sew a belt for a skirt.

In the process of work, you can change the silhouette of the skirt: if the coat was flared, then the new product can be sewn with a straight silhouette or made more tight-fitting.

Animal clothing

There are so many interesting things you can make from your old coat for your pets. Everything is limited only by imagination and laziness)

Rug made from jeans labels

The concept of using clothing items for other purposes after they have been worn out is not new. For decades, women have been making patchwork rugs and quilts from old items. In the same way, you can make a carpet with your own hands from labels from jeans. The only problem is finding enough labels, because even for a small rug you will need at least 50 pieces.

To make such carpets with your own hands, it is better to sew labels onto some kind of fabric, maybe even thin. Labels sewn on each other will give the carpet the necessary density. For work, use a sewing machine, since manually sewing each label is a very labor-intensive task. Make stitches around the perimeter of the label, where it was sewn to the jeans. You can choose the pattern yourself - the correct even mesh, herringbone, spiral for a round carpet, but labels in a slightly irregular order, sewn on top of each other, look most impressive.

Haberdashery

When altering an old coat into some new item, there are often scraps left, which are quite enough for sewing small things.

Bag

To make a bag, you need a pattern. It depends on the desired size of the new accessory and the style. If you plan to sew a bucket bag, then you will need 2 identical parts of the material. Therefore, you can use one pattern.

If you want to make a bag with an oval, round or any other shape at the bottom, you need to make a pattern for the bottom of the product.

In the process of sewing an accessory, you can decorate the outside of the bag with various beads, beautiful threads, or glue thermal stickers. Advice: to make them hold better during use of the accessory, it is recommended to stitch them on a sewing machine.

Mittens, slippers

You can also sew an accessory such as gloves or mittens from an old coat. It all depends on the material of the product and personal preferences. You can add some zest by decorating a new item with various accessories: buttons or beads.

Warm and elegant slippers are made from cashmere or wool. Having sealed the sole, you can wear these slippers for a long time and easily wash them.

Beautiful handmade bag

Even a broken umbrella can be remade and created something truly worthwhile. For example, an elegant bag. Interested? Then read on.

For the remodel you will need:

  • umbrella;
  • lightning;
  • leather handles or an old bag;
  • threads;
  • scissors.

We disassemble the umbrella into its components and wash the material.

We cut out the shape of the future bag and draw circles on the surface in a chaotic manner. You can use any container or compass.

Rug

Like the previous product, the rug can be sewn in completely different sizes and in any way. It is allowed to use a single piece of material and process only the edges of the item, or use several pieces of material for sewing. In the first option, you can decorate the rug with embroidery. In the second case, you can play with color and leave the product without unnecessary processing.

Pillow

To sew such an interior item you will need:

  • old coat;
  • filler (sintepon);
  • sewing machine;
  • scissors;
  • pattern;
  • needle and thread.

The two parts of the future pillow must be connected with the front sides facing each other and sewn together, leaving a small hole. Having turned the product inside out and filled it with padding polyester, the hole is sewn up with a hidden seam.

Important: if you want to decorate the upper part of the pillow with any elements, this must be done before sewing the pillow.

Chair upholstery

You can really give a second life to an old chair or stool, the upholstery of which is damaged, using material from an old coat.

Having made a pattern of the required size and cut out the workpiece, its edges must be processed. You can use bias tape or hand stitch the edge.

Hot stand

From small pieces of drape material you can easily make mug stands of various sizes. Larger elements can be used for sewing larger stands.

Toy

You can actually make toys for children from small scraps of felt. You don't have to use a sewing machine for this. It is enough to manually connect the parts of the future toy, and finish the edges with a seam so that the material does not crumble.
