Daffodils, hyacinths, tulips: behind the blooming fragrance of these amazing flowers there is often a huge amount of work involved in planting them.
A planter for bulbous plants will help make planting flowers in open ground easier.
Today, dozens of manufacturers of small garden tools offer various types of tools for planting bulbs.
Homemade seedling planter
Dear visitors of the site “ Samodelkin Friend ”, from the material presented you will learn how to independently make a planter for planting seedlings of a simple and reliable design from scrap metal. A video review of the structure is attached. Planting seedlings is a labor-intensive task and you have to bend your back to plant a seedling in the ground, and then you suffer from back pain for a long time. To avoid this, a planter of a fairly simple design was invented, consisting of a 50 x 50 mm guide pipe, a spring-loaded “beak” and a lever with a drawstring or cable .
The device is stuck into the ground along the embedment depth limiter, then the operator presses the handle, thereby opening the beak, due to which the planting hole expands, and a seedling is fed from the top along the bell, then the device simply rises up, and the seedlings remain in the ground for further growth.
And so, let's look at the process of planting seedlings using a planter, as well as a detailed video report reviewing the structure and its structure.

Transplanter machine device
The manual transplanter is suitable for planting vegetable crops, including peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, cabbage, as well as pumpkin and melon crops.
Its design consists of the following elements:
- wheelbase (4 wheels, 2 longitudinal and 2 transverse beams);
- 4 cassette holders;
- landing tube;
- control mechanism - a steering wheel attached to the landing tube and a lever for opening the valve petals;
- rolling skis to compact the soil around the seedlings;
- marker regulating the distance between holes.
The principle of operation of a manual transplanter is similar to the operation of a device for planting seedlings, but there are some peculiarities in control.
- Before starting work, the marker pitch and planting depth are set.
- The operator of the machine moves it by adjusting the direction using the steering wheel.
- To form holes, you need to press the valve located on the steering wheel.
- After the planting pipe has lowered, you need to remove the seedlings from the cassette and lower them into the pipe.
- Press the pedal to open the valve petals and then release the steering wheel.
- After releasing the steering wheel, the spring mechanism will raise the pipe and close the petals.
- The last action - compaction of the soil on the sides of the plants is carried out after raising the pipe by pressing the pedal of the compaction skis.
What equipment is useful for planting seedlings?
A device for planting seedlings of tomatoes and other crops (planter, planting cone) is used by gardeners in their plots, as well as by farmers and large agricultural companies. Depending on the area being processed, the type of planter is selected. On large areas (in field conditions), seedlings are planted using mechanized two- and four-row planters; in personal gardens and garden plots, manual devices are used. We will look at how to choose the right hand tool for planting seedlings or make it yourself.
Homemade device with a spring mechanism
To make a mechanical device for planting seedlings with your own hands, you need a welding machine and a minimum set of materials. The device is assembled from the following parts:
- square pipe. The length depends on the height of the person for whom the instrument is intended (on average 0.7 m). The diameter of the pipe is selected taking into account the size of the cultivated plants. They should roll freely along its inner surface. For example, for cabbage the optimal cross-section is 50×50 mm;
- movable beak. At the working end of the device, two flaps are fixed, made from the main pipe cut at an angle of 45˚. The mobility of the beak is ensured by a door canopy welded to it;
- a drive lever that communicates with a return spring. On one side the part is welded to the beak, on the other - to the upper part of the device;
- a stopper that limits the depth of immersion of the working beak into the ground.
The principle of operation is the same as that of store equipment - the pointed end is buried in the soil. When you press the drive lever, the force is transmitted through the rod to the working beak. The valves open, forming a hole for planting seedlings and at the same time releasing a seedling into it. When removing the tool from the hole, the soil covers the root system, thereby completing the process of planting each crop.
In order for the procedure to proceed smoothly, when assembling the device with your own hands, two conditions must be met. First: the stopper, located in the working part of the device, is welded at a distance from the beak that guarantees the optimal planting depth of the plant. Second: the length of the wire rod is selected so that when the valves are opened to their maximum, they “draw” a straight line with the supporting pipe (i.e., they figuratively become its continuation). If the flaps move too wide, this will make it difficult to remove the device from the hole. If the working beak opens partially, it will prevent the seedling from sliding out of the pipe, and when removing the leaves from the ground, it will pull the plant along with it.
Types of landing devices
There are several types of devices for planting tomato seedlings in open ground, a greenhouse or a greenhouse:
For planting a small number of seedlings in small beds, the simplest device is suitable - a planting cone. With its help, you can easily make many holes of the required depth in the garden bed. This is an inexpensive device, and you can make it yourself.
A manual transplanter or an automated device is suitable for planting cassette seedlings in large household plots or farms. Their cost is much higher than a landing cone, and you won’t be able to make such a device yourself. The high cost is explained by a more complex design; in addition, such planters have undeniable advantages: when planting seedlings, there is no need to bend down, and productivity increases by 9-15 times.
Bulb planter with long handle
Planters with a long handle are very convenient because when working with them, a person does not have to bend down every time they need to make a hole with a diameter of about 10 cm. Most of these tools are made on the principle of a shovel with a special foot, by stepping on which you can easily drive the device into land.
Advantages : you can work without bending over, copes with heavy soil.
Disadvantages : takes up a lot of space, is not suitable for small bulbs, there is a risk of the earth ball getting stuck inside the cone.
Landing cone design
A planting cone is the simplest planter. It consists of two parts - a cone-shaped working part and a handle. Since the planter must make holes even in hard soil, the working part must be made of high-quality metal. As a rule, carbon steel or stainless steel is used to produce such tools.
The working part (cone) is pointed on one side and has a measuring scale on it, which is very convenient for determining the depth of the planter depending on the type of seedling.
When purchasing, pay attention to the following parameters:
Handles can be plastic or wooden. Plastic ones are more practical, since wood can dry out over time and injure the palm. Cones with a sliding mechanism are more convenient when removing soil from a hole and filling in seedlings.
When making a purchase, be sure to ask how long the warranty covers. Manufacturers of high-quality garden equipment assume a warranty of at least three years.
Planter with beveled edge and long handle
This type of planter was created specifically for digging holes for small bulbs without bending over. It differs from a conventional planter with two handles in the shape of the planting cone (a cylinder beveled at the top) and the presence of only one leg support.
Advantages : comfortable position for work, relatively light weight, it is possible to work with small bulbs.
Disadvantages : not suitable for creating holes for medium and small bulbs.
Features of an automated device for planting seedlings
Many gardeners will like a tool for quickly planting seedlings with partial automation. It consists of two main parts - a detachable (expanding) cone and a guide pipe. The pipe can be made of steel or plastic, and the cone can only be made of carbon steel.
The planter is equipped with a limit stop: this allows you to adjust the planting depth. Such a device can be used in a greenhouse, greenhouse and for planting seedlings of tomatoes, peppers and other vegetable crops in open ground or under film mulch.
Transplantation using such a tool occurs as follows.
When purchasing, you need to pay attention to the diameter of the guide pipe and cone and its compliance with the standard size of the cassettes used.
Best options
In any large gardening store, the buyer will easily find a planting cone of one design or another, and maybe even be faced with a choice which is better. Especially for such cases, several successful planting cones are given as a guide for purchase.
Landing cone, polypropylene
It was included in the rating because of its cheapness - only 40 rubles. The tool doesn't even have a manufacturer. Such products can with equal probability be manufactured both in China and in the nearest workshop near Moscow. The purchase is justified in the case when you need to plant, and quickly, in other words, in the event of a spontaneous decision.
The cone is completely polypropylene, cast, thick-walled, but hollow inside. It is most logical to consider it as a disposable item, since there is no guarantee that it will last more than one planting session. However, the penny price still makes the product a plus.
Cone Raco 4205-53524 with coil
This copy is already a hundred rubles more expensive. The working part is made of carbon steel coated with an anti-corrosion compound. It is attached to the handle with a special lock, which is released using a button. The handle itself is plastic, anatomically shaped.
The trick of the tool is that you can purchase different attachments for one handle and successfully change them. For the convenience of gardeners who love strict planting geometry, a spool of marking thread is mounted on the cone. Thanks to it, you can accurately check the distances between the holes, as well as the straightness of their location.
DON GAZON 126-0370
A simple and durable cone made of black steel, coated with abrasion-resistant powder paint. The upper hemisphere is welded to the cone integrally with the handle holder. The handle itself is plastic, rubberized, comfortable to grip, curved for better grip. Along with its simple design, the garden cone is durable - even if the paint peels off, it will serve on the site for a long time, doing its job.
ListOK 150689
One of the most affordable detachable cones, colloquially called planters. The material of the working part is stainless steel, the handles are made of colored polypropylene. You will hardly forget such a device in the garden - the bright color and shine of the steel, which is very easy to clean, makes the tool noticeable against the background of soil or greenery.
The main purpose is to do the work of forming holes for bulbous plants. More than one woman said thank you as she planted flowers in her flower beds. Among the advantages, it is worth noting the scale by which you can navigate when measuring the planting depth, and among the disadvantages - the thin metal of the structure.
SKRAB 28149
Classic hole digger in a combined design. The body is made of wood coated with a protective compound against rotting. The cone itself is made of stainless steel, secured with two rivets. Thick, smooth walls are ideal for contact with the soil; with moderate moisture, the working part hardly gets dirty. The handle is T-shaped, which allows you to apply significant effort. The male population can use the cone even in dry soil.
RACO 4233-53621
The cone is made of high quality stainless steel, like other RACO products. To help the gardener, the cutting edge of the cone is reinforced with teeth, which improves penetration and helps cut the soil with more force. The handles are made of hard, smooth plastic and can be held with both bare hands and gloves. Non-susceptibility to corrosion has a positive effect on the durability of the product - if handled correctly, it can serve for many years when working on site.
GARDENA 3039-20
A worthy representative of the family of sliding-type landing cones. Maximum strength, product convenience on the verge of maintaining the simplest design. The material used is hardened steel, coated with a thin layer of polymer corrosion protection.
The handle is made of hard plastic and is not round in cross-section, but quadrangular with rounded edges, which prevents slipping during intensive work. For convenience, there is a special pressure trigger under the handle, which brings the halves of the mechanism together, ensuring a strong hold of the earthen substance.

How to simplify seedling work: 7 useful devices for growing seedlings
Growing seedlings can be greatly simplified if you use special devices. Their use allows not only to reduce labor costs, but also to significantly improve the quality of planting material.
- Peat tablets
- Hydroponics
- Heated mats
- Mini-greenhouses
- Root growers
- Phytolamps
- Propagators
Peat tablets
Planting seeds in a common container involves acquiring suitable soil, but most importantly, it requires further digging. Such an event leads to unnecessary waste of time and at the same time negatively affects the root system and the condition of the entire plant. Planting in peat tablets eliminates the indicated negative aspects of the seedling method.
The tablets already contain all the necessary nutrients. They are sold compressed and, when moistened, increase in height by 6–7 times. Care for seedlings is minimal - only timely watering. Planting work is also carried out much faster, and when transplanted, the emerged seedlings are buried in the soil along with the substrate, so they do not experience any stress.
A more affordable option is peat cups. But they will require soil. All other benefits correspond to the tablets.
Hydroponics
Hydroponics is the growing of plants, including seedlings, not in soil, but in mineral wool, vermiculite, moss, peat, hydrogel or other similar substrates immersed in a nutrient solution. For this purpose, special hydroponic installations are used, consisting of a container and a basket for filler. There are more complex models, but simplified options are quite suitable for seedlings.
The formula of a specially formulated solution provides the plants with the necessary nutrition. In this case, the seedlings turn out to be more viable, are easier to transplant to a permanent place and take root faster.
Heated mats
Heating mats are small in size and powered by electricity. It is recommended to install seedling containers on them for better development of the root system, especially for cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and other heat-loving crops.
This device is most relevant when growing seedlings on a cold windowsill to uniformly heat the bottom of the container. In addition, it can be used to dry mushrooms, fruits and other fruits.
Mini-greenhouses
Mini-greenhouses are seedling containers with a transparent glass or plastic lid that ensures the maintenance of the required microclimate. To regulate the level of humidity, ventilation holes are provided in the lid.
Most often, a cassette with a pallet is used as the lower part of a mini-greenhouse. There are also models with a more complex design, in which the soil mixture and water are evenly distributed.
Root growers
There are many advantages to such devices. They allow you to use a minimum of soil, save the space occupied by seedling containers, but the main thing is to remove the sprouts for replanting without harm to the root system. The cells have a movable bottom, with the help of which all the contents are easily squeezed out.
Compared to peat tablets, root sprouters are cheaper because they are reusable. In addition, many models are equipped with automatic watering systems, ventilation covers, and lighting.
Phytolamps
Seedlings require plenty of light to prevent stretching and ensure proper development. During the period when it is grown, daylight hours are still short, so you need to equip an additional light source. Phytolamps are best suited for this.
They come in fluorescent and LED. The former should be installed at least 30 cm from the plants, the latter – 100 cm. If placed closer, the seedlings may overheat, although the risk of burns is minimal.
Propagators
A propagator is a ready-made indoor mini-greenhouse, the design of which combines the above-mentioned greenhouses and mats, and is also equipped with some other functions. Such devices are made in the form of a container with a high transparent lid, on which there are adjustable holes for ventilation. Devices for lighting, humidification and heating are installed inside. In the most advanced models, all indicators are adjusted automatically.
DIY device for planting seedlings
This article describes a method for making a device for planting seedlings with your own hands.
Spring gardening work involves, in addition to the joy of communicating with nature, fatigue, pain in the legs and lower back. However, the result obtained: environmentally friendly ripe vegetables, fruits, berries, herbs, covers all the physical difficulties that arise when working in the beds. Probably the most labor-intensive and tedious process in this matter can be called planting seedlings with your own hands.
You can plant seedlings in open ground only with your own hands, or you can use various mechanical devices, among which the most popular are the following:
The corresponding industrial devices are sold in retail chains, but it is possible to make them yourself.
Important: Making a device for planting seedlings with your own hands will save the family budget (in favor of purchasing plant protection products and seeds) and will allow you to sort out the accumulated scrap metal, where you will definitely find parts for future tools
The process of making a mechanical cone-shaped device for planting seedlings, or a planting cone, with your own hands:
This tool, popularly called a planter, is the simplest and consists of a working part (cone) and a handle (tool holder). The sliding mechanism of the cone makes it convenient to excavate soil and fill the hole.
To make it, you need to select a small sheet of stainless steel and cut two identical trapezoids in accordance with the dimensions of the future hole in the ground. Next, the parts are connected to each other with an overhead strip. In this case, it is necessary to provide a gap of up to 15mm wide between the parts.
The tool handle can be made from two polypropylene pipes of different diameters, so that one pipe fits inside the other. First place a spring in a large pipe, then place a narrow pipe there.
Next, you can assemble the tool as follows: weld two curved metal strips to the body of the tool, attaching a handle to them.
The process of making a manual device for planting seedlings at home:
The tool is quite simple to manufacture and easy to use. It helps to quickly produce holes of the same size in the soil for planting seedlings.
For manufacturing, you need a metal or plastic container with a size equal to the future hole. An improvised metal piston (a thick bundle of wire, in the form of a double-sided loop) must be placed in this container. The device itself should have the shape of a glass (an open part on one side and a hole for the piston handle on the other side). The piston is a double-sided loop: a horizontal loop for grasping soil (similar to the loop of a construction mixer, only with a diameter equal to the size of the container) and a loop that performs the function of a piston handle.
The operating principle of this device is to place the open side of the container into the ground by lowering the piston handle. At this moment, the soil is captured and a hole is formed for planting seedlings. Next, the piston handle must be pulled out and the earth will fall out of the hole in the desired direction.
Devices for marking holes
When planting vegetable crops, homemade equipment for marking holes is especially in demand. It makes the job much easier and saves time, since you no longer have to calculate at what distance to make each recess. The beds look neater and more well-groomed.
Jagged markers
The device is intended for marking holes before planting seedlings. The base is made of a metal angle, and the teeth are made of elongated bolts or reinforcement, fixed at equal intervals from each other. The device is convenient to use when planting seedlings of peppers, eggplants, and zucchini: just press the bar with your foot and you will get small marks on the ground. Deeper holes are made along them, into which the sprouts are placed. You can put a limiter on the rail for the next row.
The second way is to make a marking device from a durable piece of chipboard or plywood. Blind holes are drilled on the plank, into which wooden spikes are inserted (for reliability, they are placed on glue). For convenience, a handle is attached to the sheet.
The simplest method of assembling a marker is from a garden rake. Additional teeth are welded on the back side with the required interval between them. You can make the equipment yourself - attach teeth with bolts to a steel pipe or metal profile.
Needle markers
Used for sowing seeds and when planting seedlings. The basis is a plank or beam into which needle-shaped teeth are driven - self-tapping screws, nails, plastic pins. The length of the needles is calculated based on the planting depth of the cultivated plants (on average at intervals of 6–8 cm).
Markings are usually applied in the first and second rows. For example, for eggplant seedlings, a distance of 10–15 cm is selected. You don’t have to put marks on subsequent rows—the previously picked sprouts will help you navigate.
Slat markers
The structure of the marker is simple - a handle and slats with a triangular cross-section are attached to the board. With its help, grooves are created for planting seedlings. To do this, the device is placed across the bed and pressed down with a foot on top. The length of the slats should be 5–8 cm shorter than the bed. If longitudinal rows are needed, use a rake-shaped marker. The role of the teeth is performed by triangular wedges (with a pitch of 18 - 20 cm from each other).
Universal manual planter
There are different types of garden planters that are designed for different crops and their seedlings. Today in this article we will talk about a manual universal garden planter.
Purpose
The universal manual planter is used to perform the following operations:
The planter has the following positive advantages. It is simple in design, so you can make it yourself.
The planter consists of two ordinary quadrangular iron shovels. The dimensions of the holes she makes ensure painless survival of the planted plants. The hand planter is durable, versatile and convenient as a tool, in addition to being easy to work with. Compared to an ordinary shovel or a planting scoop, it provides significant productivity and a great economic effect.
Planter device
It consists of two quadrangular iron shovels, which are shaped like a truncated cone. Each of the shovels is bent in a semicircle along its length, forming “flaps” or a split chamber-glass. The doors are hingedly connected to each other with bolts.

Planter operation
Making holes for planting seedlings
Making holes with a planter is done as follows. The planter is immersed in the ground in the closed position of the valves, i.e. in a position where they form a truncated cone. To do this, the planter handles are moved apart until its halves are closed. In this position, the planter is immersed in the soil, then it should be sharply turned around its axis half a turn to the right and left to form smooth walls of the hole in order to avoid destruction of the walls when excavating the earth.
Rice. 2. Making holes for planting seedlings
After immersing the manual seedling planter in the soil, its leaves should be further compressed, for which the handles are moved to the sides. This must be done in almost all types of soil, especially in dry, loosely cohesive soil. Otherwise, when you pull the planter out of the ground, the soil crumbles and remains in place. The release of the soil-monolith from the planter is done by opening the doors by bringing the handles closer to each other. The holes are made 10-12 cm deep. This depth is sufficient to completely embed the root system of the seedlings into the soil with a planter. The peat humus pot should be immersed 2-4 cm below the surface of the earth.
The depth of the hole depends on the type and condition of the soil, and on the force with which the planter is immersed. On well-cultivated soil, the planter can be immersed to the desired depth only with manual effort. On somewhat compacted soil, the planter is immersed by applying pressure with the foot. When planting, it is very important to maintain straightness in the rows, this is achieved with the help of a cord.
The photo shows a planter in operation
To maintain the same distance between plants in longitudinal rows (along the cord) and obtain straight transverse rows, when making holes in the first and second longitudinal rows, markings are made with a certain measure to establish a given distance in the rows. For early cabbage, for example, this distance is set between the rows at 50 cm and in the rows also 50 cm. On the third and subsequent longitudinal rows, marks are not necessary, since you can be guided by the plants planted on the two previous longitudinal rows. This way you can get exact squares.
Transplanting plants with a clod of earth
It is very important that a plant being planted in another place has the same soil around its roots where it previously grew. Transplanting plants with soil is easily achieved with the manual planter we recommend, for example, replanting strawberries.
It's done like this. In the place where the plants are to be transplanted, holes are first made with a planter, and at this time, in the area from which the plants are transplanted, a hole is dug with a planter. In this case, the aboveground organs of the transplanted plant are placed between the valves and in this position the planter is immersed in the ground.
Rice. 3. Transplanting plants with a clod of earth
Then, by slightly squeezing the flaps, the planter is turned half a turn to the right and left, and the plant is pulled out along with the ground. Carefully, in order to maintain the shape of the pots, the dug plants are placed in a box and transferred to a new place where the holes have already been made. Otherwise, the process of planting and embedding is no different from planting seedlings in peat pots from greenhouses into open ground.
Planter-shovel for small bulbs
If you plan to plant crocuses, muscari, galanthus or any other small-bulbous plants on your site, you will need a planter that makes shallow holes with a diameter of no more than 5 cm. A cylinder spatula with a beveled edge is ideal for these purposes.
Advantages : durable, suitable for working with small-diameter planting material, easy to fill the bulbs.
Disadvantages : not at all suitable for planting large and medium-sized bulbs.
A gardener-inventor made a hand-held planter for seedlings from rebar
I couldn’t miss this idea without posting it specifically for subscribers and everyone interested. It’s a pity that television does not promote the ideas of homemade inventors. And thanks to the masters for sharing ideas with us, distributing them on their own. This master should definitely be invited to work in factories and design bureaus as a technical innovation engineer. Such tools exist and there are modifications. But what is surprising about this development is the combination of practicality and relative simplicity of its planter. And the presentation of his product to the general public is worthy of praise: no slurred speech, interjections or omissions. Everything is clear and to the point. It's easy to repeat with these instructions.
Cool design of seedling planter
The tool is very high quality. It is important that the working part does not compact the soil, but the soil is cut and carefully pulled out of the hole. Potatoes and seedlings will quietly take root.

The owner made a convenient device for planting seedlings in the ground. Drawing
Konstantin Solomatin shared his homemade product to streamline the work of amateur gardeners. The owner of the garden tried it out when planting strawberries, and it is convenient to plant with this device.
The advantage of this development is ease of manufacture and neat results. Suitable for leisurely work on the ridges, with comfort.
For his device, the master took a piece of duralumin pipe. These are used in chimneys. Its diameter is 6 cm. Two suitable plates are used for the handles.
Due to bad weather, it was not possible to film how the homemade product works. But let's explain in words. The tool works like this. A seedling is placed inside the cone from above, roots down. The cone is inserted into the ground. The “jaws” unclench, leaving the plant in the hole, and the tool rises up.

What it is?
A garden cone solves the problem of organizing holes and holes for green spaces.
When it comes to tree seedlings, you can’t do without a shovel: you need a large and deep hole, but it’s much easier to give it an even shape. But small plants - bulbs, seedlings, flower seeds and garden crops - need to be planted in very small depressions in the soil. Doing them by hand is inconvenient and time consuming.
A regular bayonet shovel is too big for this. The only more or less convenient option is a planting scoop, but even this is not very convenient, and besides, in order to make neat holes with it, you need a lot of practice. But a planting cone is the most suitable, and most importantly, a quick tool that allows you to make a depression in the ground.
Advantages of the device
Using a garden cone, a gardener or gardener receives a number of benefits that motivate the use of this simple but useful device for planting green plants:
- The pits are smooth and round . Using a planting scoop, you can achieve this result, but you will have to make more movements.
- Almost no soil falls into the resulting holes . This is achieved due to the physics of the process - the earth is either compacted with a cone to the sides, or remains inside due to the conical design of the working part. When working with a scoop, shovel or hoe, the earth inevitably further loosens.
- The time savings are obvious . Where you have to make two or three or even more movements with a digging tool, the cone can easily handle it in one.
- Indispensable when planting a large volume of material . Digging five or six holes under a window is not a difficult task. But if you have to root two or three boxes of seedlings or a bucket of bulbs of various flower crops, then the job can take the whole day. In this case, the landing cone serves as a real means of mechanization, albeit a very simple one.

Each shovel is attached to a handle, which acts as a lever; the shovels are attached to each other by a hinge joint, which ensures their rotation relative to each other.
To make a planter, you will need sheet metal, from which you need to cut two blanks for shovels.
Planter with two blades

Another variation on the theme of a planter with a spring mechanism. However, this time the place of the cone was taken by two blades, which are driven not by a button, but by pressing a horizontal bar. This tool is good for making shallow holes that are suitable for planting small bulbous plants. It can also be used for replanting many other plants. However, such a planter is not suitable for preparing holes for larger flowers.
Advantages : easy to use, suitable for various types of work.
Disadvantages : the open mechanism requires regular cleaning; you cannot dig deep holes.
Reviews from professionals and amateurs
Based on the reviews left on thematic forums by admiring users of the device in question, one general conclusion can be drawn: a planting cone is an indispensable device for a person involved in agriculture. The thing is that this device allows not only to carefully and quickly plant and replant annual or perennial plants, but also to save energy for the farmer, allowing him to spend free time with his family over a cup of tea. It can be used not only by experienced gardeners, but also by beginners. It’s worth getting this tool if you want to grow seedlings.
And it’s not at all necessary to do this at the dacha, because even in a standard city apartment you can grow a whole garden on the windowsill! If you only have the desire, the tools will be there!

A planting cone is the most simplified version of a planter. It is used to quickly and with minimal effort form a hole of the required depth in the soil. You can buy a planting cone for seedlings at a hardware store or build it yourself. There are various drawings, cones are made from materials of different strengths, and they also differ in design features.
We offer you the following instructions for making your own planting cone:
- You will need a sheet of stainless steel, from which we cut out two identical trapezoids. An alternative can be two shovel trays - metal parts of shovels from which the wooden handles have been separated.
- We sharpen the lower parts of the parts - cut trapezoids or trays.
- In the wide part, we connect the parts using a narrow overhead strip and self-tapping screws. A gap of 10-15 mm should form between the parts.
- We make the handle of a homemade landing cone from two propylene tubes of different diameters. We install a spring in a tube of larger diameter, and then a tube of smaller diameter.
- We attach two narrow curved strips made of the same metal as the cone itself to the planter body. The handle will be attached precisely to these strips, using the same screws.
The resulting device is very simple; it can be easily made with a minimum set of tools and materials available at the nearest hardware store.
Classification
Even such a simple garden tool has its own distinctive features and characteristics, according to which cones can be divided into several types. Depending on the parameters, the choice of assistant in planting seeds and seedlings usually occurs.
By device type
The design of garden cones can be of two types. Depending on this, the entire variety of products from various manufacturers on the market is divided into two large groups:
- The cone is monolithic or hollow, but one-piece, solid . A handle is attached to the top; usually its placement is longitudinal or slightly curved for ease of holding. This planting cone works on the principle of a needle: thanks to its sharp end, it exerts great pressure on the soil. After penetrating the soil, the cone pushes it apart and simultaneously compacts it. When pulled out of the ground, it does not crumble inward; a neat and fairly deep hole remains, especially convenient for planting bulbs.
- A split cone, which consists of two semicircular sheets of metal, fastened in a special way . It has a hole at the bottom, and at the top it is fastened in the middle with two rivets or flared pins. The cone handle is made of two halves, one of which is narrower and the other wider. Due to the difference in diameters, they fit into each other. Konu works as follows: the lower part is immersed in the soil and then removed from it. The compacted earth ends up inside. Seeds, bulbs or seedlings are placed in the hole, then by pressing the handle, the halves of the cone are pushed apart from below. The fallen soil is used to dig a hole.
How to choose a practical and durable assistant
When visiting a farm store, you can be stuck for a long time near the rack with assistant devices. To prevent this from happening, it is enough to know the key characteristics of a successful model:
- the material from which the tool is made must be of proper quality;
- height of the main part and handle;
- the presence of a sliding mechanism, measuring scale or limiter;
- service life (only well-known manufacturers of garden equipment provide a guarantee of up to three years, because they use high-quality materials).
Important: a medium-height steel landing cone with a sliding mechanism, a measuring scale and a plastic handle is in high demand.
The average cost in online stores varies from 200 to 350 rubles. The interesting thing is that you can make this device yourself.
How and where to place pipe structures
Such beds can be placed vertically or horizontally. Advantages of vertical arrangement:
- saving space (several dozen bushes are placed per 1 m2);
- saving water, fertilizers and pest control products;
- ensuring maximum illumination for all berry bushes;
- ease of harvesting;
- originality of the appearance of facades, balconies, and adjacent areas.
Vertically arranged strawberry beds serve as an original decoration for the site
Horizontal beds with planted strawberries are also an effective way to grow crops and decorate a site. They can be hung in a greenhouse, on a fence, or installed in an isolated area, placing the pipes in several tiers.
Hanging or ground-mounted racks can be used as support for horizontal beds
Advantages and disadvantages of the device
A planting cone has many advantages over the conventional seating method. Its main advantages are listed below.
- It saves not only the gardener’s energy, but also precious time. The work goes many times faster than with the classical method.
- Creates neat holes in the ground intended for planting pre-prepared seedlings in them.
- Easily determines the required depth of the hole (if the planting cone for seedlings is equipped with a special scale).
- Helps avoid the hassle of dirty hands. The convenient holder keeps your hands clean. This is great news not only for women, but also for men, because sometimes it can be very difficult to remove accumulated dirt under the nails.
These are not all the positive qualities of the assistant device. The list can be completed by the person who has tried this tool in practice at least once.
If we are talking about the features of the device, then it is worth pointing out the disadvantages:
- Low height (to make a hole, you have to bend low, squat down or put your knees on the ground).
- Short-lived material (a device made of stainless steel will not be able to cope with heavy soil, especially after heavy and prolonged rain, so it is made of light types of steel).
If working on all fours doesn’t scare you, and the advantages of a landing cone are impressive, then rush to buy the device in the store or make it yourself. What should you pay attention to when purchasing this tool? Let's find out.
