Diorama “Tundra” (master class on making a model)

Diorama “Tundra” (master class on making a model)

We continue to publish interesting experiences from teachers; we recently received a master class on making a model of the tundra with our own hands , which was prepared by Amina Bahlul.

“In our child development center “Rainbow” we pay great attention to developing children’s interest in the literature of Yamal, developing expressive reading skills, the ability to see the beauty of nature and family traditions. We introduce children to the spiritual culture of the northern peoples and cultivate love for their native land. I created the diorama “Encampment” , which played a significant role in the study of the culture and life of the peoples of the North. I would like to share my skills with my colleagues. I wish you creative success.

Master class on making a diorama “Tundra”

We make a tundra diorama.

To do this, we need to prepare the basis for our future diorama. I will have a base made of plywood, the size should correspond to the place where it will be located.

First, we will prepare birch trees for our diorama. To do this, I took two birch branches, which are closer in similarity to tree trunks.

Take white acrylic paint (you can use regular gouache paint) and paint over the branches.

Using black paint, we apply a design to our branches, and now we have a birch tree trunk.

To make the crown of the birch tree, I used foam rubber (an ordinary dishwashing sponge, it took me 5 medium sponges). We take green and yellow paint and apply it to our foam rubber (in order to make our crown look more realistic, we apply green and yellow paint alternately), soaking it abundantly. Then we let the painted foam rubber dry for about 3-4 hours (I dried it on a radiator).

After drying, the foam rubber will become hard and can be easily grated on a fine grater. We have an excellent base for our birch tree.

Take PVA glue and apply it to the finished branches (amply).

Then we glue the made crown. And we got a beautiful birch tree. So we need to make several birch trees. We don’t throw away the remaining foam rubber; we will need it for making grass.

Let's start making land . For this we need:

  • PVA glue,
  • paper or fabric,
  • sand,
  • plaster (I used plaster bandages, very convenient),
  • water.

Paper or fabric must be soaked in water and formed into a relief.

To secure our relief we will need a plaster bandage. We cut off a small piece, soak it in water and apply it to the paper relief we made. We are gradually covering our terrain. In a few minutes our relief will dry out.

When everything is dry, you can start working with sand. We apply PVA glue to our base (amply) and begin to fill it with sand. So we have a relief base.

Let's start making chum . For this we need 7-8 chopsticks (I took sushi chopsticks). We fix our sticks with wire at the top and we get a frame for our chum.

We take a plaster bandage, dip it in water and apply it to our frame, forming a chum. Once dry, it will become hard and we can place it on our diorama.

We secure the chum with a plaster bandage (each stick with a moistened piece).

We secure our birch trees in the same way.

From the remaining rubbed foam rubber we make grass. Apply PVA glue to the selected area for the grass and sprinkle with our foam rubber. And now we have a fragment of our diorama.

Let's start making the river . For this we need a piece of blue polyethylene and silicone glue. We glue the polyethylene onto the base for the river with silicone glue. Then we fill our river with silicone glue on top of the polyethylene, it will give our river a more realistic look.

To revive our diorama, you can use ready-made toys of northern animals .

I'm sure you will succeed. Good luck!"

Many thanks to Amina for the detailed story with step-by-step photographs.

If you also make educational layouts for children, send them to us, we will be happy to publish them.

Yes, you rarely see such layouts in schools. Usually only in museums.

It’s beautiful, but trees don’t grow in the tundra...
