In every home ever built, there are two most important components - the floor and the roof. We don't spend a lot of time looking at the roof of our home, but we do spend many hours a day interacting with the floor. Regardless of whether we sit on it, walk or stand. Unless, of course, you can walk on the ceiling like Spider-Man . Considering all these factors, it can be said that the floor is the main part of your home that reflects your personality and lifestyle. Today we are going to share some amazing flooring ideas with you. Enjoy...
The floor is made of wooden cuts.
Nowadays, such seemingly very simple at first glance floorings made from wooden sections of logs - such unique stumps - have become very popular.
Stages of constructing garden paths from saw cuts
There are many lumber materials that can be used to lay paths in the garden or in a flower garden near a country house, these are panels, boards, timber or decking boards (parquet), although this is not solid wood, but a composite - sawdust with plastic (wood plastic). But the most attractive material, of course, will be sections of logs, where the structure and growth rings are clearly visible. Below you will find step-by-step instructions for making fragments and laying them out.

To implement such a plan, you will need a number of materials and tools, these are:
- Lumber - logs for cutting into stumps.
- Waterproofing is thick polyethylene, but geotextile is better.
- Bulk building materials - pebbles, gravel (crushed stone), screenings, sand.
- Level – preferably one meter or more.
- Cutting tool – chainsaw.
- Auxiliary tools - a large rubber or wooden mallet, buckets, bayonet and shovel, brushes.

Detailed master class here.
The floor in the bedroom is made from timber cuts.
A young Japanese designer who wanted to renovate his bedroom in the city center of Hamamatsu used materials left over from the renovation. This is how a floor made from saw cuts of wooden beams was born. The end result is a unique, handcrafted finish that resembles a giant Tetris made from multiple blocks of wood.
Wooden saw cuts - laying and pouring technology
Now let's talk about the most interesting thing - the technology itself. Almost any tree species is suitable for the job, but it is better if they are plants with a dense, solid structure. As we know, for example, hard wood is found in oak, beech, and hornbeam.
In addition to hardness for wood, there is also the concept of stability, this is also important for what we are going to do. We do not take into account exotic species, but if we consider traditional species, then oak and walnut have these two indicators at their best.
Trees such as linden, spruce, poplar, pine, aspen, cedar, and fir have soft wood and are not suitable for flooring. There is a measure of wood hardness, it is measured on a certain Brinell scale. So, for the manufacture of parquet, only those trees are used that have at least average hardness on this same Brinnell scale.
I think it’s already clear that the saw cuts should be very well dried. No humidity is allowed.
Method 1
Here is a description of one technology. End cuts of logs 10-12 cm thick are suitable, but it’s a matter of imagination, you can take absolutely any, lay circles of different diameters in one floor. You will also need lime, sawdust, wax, clay, linseed oil, lard, and water.
Laying as for a mosaic, with minimal distances between adjacent elements. Sand with small pebbles is poured onto the surface in a layer of up to 10 centimeters. Then they lay the saw cuts, pressing them into the sand, making sure that the top level is approximately the same for everyone.
How to fill the space between the round logs? The “holes” are filled with a paste-like consistency: 1 kilogram of fat, 5 kg of sawdust, 1 kg of lime, and about 2 kg of wet clay. They say that it is a good idea to add marble dust or small glass fragments to the composition.
Carefully fill all voids, as well as cracks in the saw cuts, and allow to dry for 2 days. After which the surface should be well polished; a sanding machine will not hurt. Polishing with wax and oil.
Method 2
Here's another description of the process. Cut the wood sections with a band saw. Place them on the plywood, gluing them with construction adhesive. Fill the seams with a specially prepared solution containing 20% sawdust. After hardening, it is sanded using a machine, and the floor surface becomes smooth and the cuts are clean.
The top of the floor with saw cuts is covered with sealant. I think the mortar is 80 percent epoxy-based self-leveling floor mortar. It is better to take a dark color, but then make sure that the dark color does not stain the surface of the wood.
I think at the end you can apply a topcoat, varnish, epoxy, or polyurethane-based self-leveling floor.
By the way, some people place saw cuts on liquid concrete, probably for greater reliability, as in the very first photo. So here everyone decides for himself what will be more convenient for him to work with.
By the way, if you want the visible wood surface of the floor to have a certain shade, then this can be done, for example, with stain, immediately after leveling and sanding, before applying the final varnish coating.
In interior design nowadays, saw cuts are widely used to create very beautiful tabletops, chairs, and decorative wooden wall panels in eco style. Remember the cartoon about the hedgehog in the fog? There the hedgehog talks about juniper branches. It is better not to cover crafts or artistic compositions made from juniper with anything on top, or with any varnish - they have an amazing aroma that lasts for many years.
Cutting wood is an interesting material for creating all sorts of crafts, and it is beautiful in itself. Children enjoy burning and drawing on them.
What else I would like to add is that the end parquet made of transverse rounds does not necessarily have to consist of round mosaic components.
If you have a beam, square or rectangular in cross-section, then it will also be interesting, only here there are certain specifics - the gaps between the parts will be smaller. It looks like real parquet. However, this is parquet, only made using a different technology.
Wood cuts in the interior - home decor ideas
In addition to the floor, the interior can be tied together with some other original decoration of the wall or part of it, in the form of a spectacular panel or artistic composition that will act as an art object. Branches that are not too thick can also be used to make a large floor flowerpot in the shape of a bottle for room decor.
Floor mosaic with examples of geometric design elements
There are different types of floors; sawn wood floors are also a kind of “mosaic”, since they are laid according to the same principle. But then we will talk about the classics. Simple as well as more complex patterns and ornaments with two, three, four color combinations of tiles. Samples were photographed in the museum; these are the works of old masters.
Original handmade wooden tables
Such unique wooden floors are best matched with unusual furniture, also made by hand, on your own. It will perfectly complement the interior. If you follow the link (a large selection of different options), then, in addition to those in the picture, you will also see several examples of tabletops for tables with cut wood.
Floor made of leather belts.
At first glance, this flooring is very reminiscent of traditional parquet. But, if you look closely, you can see the original pattern of details, miniature holes and the heterogeneous color scheme of the canvas. To the touch, the floors seem softer and warmer than usual. And there is nothing strange about this. The fact is that the original floor covering is made of many leather belts connected to each other.
Are all logs suitable for this role?
In fact, in addition to the “painful” logs already mentioned above, those that are too soft will also not be suitable. Try to select wood from hard, durable species. If we take specific examples, soft wood species are spruce, pine, fir, cedar, aspen, linden, and poplar. It's better not to use them. But oak or walnut are perfect for this.
You also need to focus on your financial capabilities. After all, such floors can be not only cheap, but also quite expensive if you buy blanks and do not make them yourself, and also if expensive types of wood are used to finish the floor.
Floor made of coins.
What can you buy with small change these days? You can’t even buy a box of matches, but when you collect the coins together, you can think about really big projects. For example, make an original floor out of them.
Laying a log floor on a sand surface
You should start by limiting the work area, after which the floor surface is covered with sand of river or sea origin. The sand layer should be 5-10 centimeters thick. So this approach is more relevant for apartments with a sufficient ceiling height.
Next, the actual process of laying the log surface begins. Laying should be done by strongly pressing the fragments into the sand base. At the same time, you need to try to work to ensure that the level of the stacked logs is approximately the same.
Regarding where exactly to carry out the installation, you can focus on covering the floor with tiles. Some people start from the farthest visible corner, some from the threshold, and some do it from the middle. Be that as it may, we usually have baseboards on the sides of the floor, which can hide unevenness. In addition, by using options with different diameters, you also free your hands to fill the edges of the floor with “trifles.” Of course, you can’t do without trimming, so also have a saw ready.
As soon as everything is laid, we move on to the stage of filling the voids with paste, the composition of which was announced in the previous method. The finishing work is identical - we fix the structure with a self-leveling floor, or choose polishing with natural beeswax or linseed oil.

The floor is made of old wood.
Wood floors are generally one of the most sought after elements in a home. Because of its natural appearance and natural warmth underfoot, wood looks very beautiful and always remains timeless.
Advantages and disadvantages of a floor made from wood cuts with your own hands
Agree, almost all construction and finishing materials that people use today to furnish their living space are mostly of artificial origin. Even if they are not toxic and belong to the category of environmentally friendly materials, they still do not have a natural origin, and from the point of view of the science of Feng Shui, their energy component tends to zero. But this is not the point - unlike them, wood (including its saw cuts) is a creation of nature, which is the first advantage of a floor made from saw cuts. There is no need to rejoice in advance - this is a double-edged sword. On the one hand there is natural wood, and on the other there are synthetic polymer binders that will have to be used as a protective coating - in general, the situation from an environmental point of view is twofold and, most likely, negative factors will win here and negate the entire environmental component of the floor.
By and large, here we can highlight only a few advantages that can really be called the advantages of this sex. Oddly enough, this is a decorative component - essentially, it is a mosaic that can be made at your own discretion, creating various patterns. And save money by doing the installation work yourself. In my opinion, everything else is far-fetched. Judge for yourself.
- Saw cuts are a natural and cheap, and sometimes even free, material. I agree, you can cut thin sections yourself - if you have the same electric saw at hand, this is not a problem, even if you use thick branches brought from the nearest underbrush or planting as raw materials. But look further - to bind all these stumps into a single floor from saw cuts, nothing more than an epoxy or polyurethane self-leveling floor is used, which today is considered almost the most expensive coating, which, by the way, will be needed much more than to create decorative 3d floor. We can talk about the cheapness of a floor made from sawdust only if it is installed, so to speak, using traditional methods (bundling with clay and sawdust), which are by no means durable.
- High floor strength. The situation is the same as with cheap raw materials for such coating. The strength of this floor is determined by three factors - the presence of a rigid base under the wood cuts, the strength of the wood itself and the strength of the protective coating. It's no secret that high-quality and durable wood, such as oak, hornbeam, beech, to put it mildly, does not lie underfoot, and that which does lie around requires additional processing, i.e. preparation. In principle, and this is not a problem, such a nuance simply increases the period of installation work.
Floor made from saw cuts photo
But let's return to our strength - a good and durable floor from wood cuts cannot be made cheaply. Spending money for the short term is also a very dubious idea. By and large, this gender cannot offer a person anything but unusual beauty. This is purely my opinion, but if you think carefully about this issue, you will probably come to exactly the same conclusion. And while you are thinking, we will go further and tell you about two ways to make a floor from saw cuts with your own hands.
The floors are made of old brick.
The brick floor is a striking architectural element. A real old floor resembles a city pavement or the paths of a quiet park. Despite the fact that these floors are hard and durable, they bring into the interior their own unique artistic play of their natural colors of old baked clay.
