DIY Christmas paper box for a gift

How to make and decorate a gift box?

Most gifts are packaged in boxes and boxes.
Well, it’s really very, very convenient, but the box is different. Presenting a gift in a shoebox, for example, is somehow not very attractive, even if you wrap it in wrapping paper. If the box is decorated, and even has an interesting shape, that’s a completely different matter. Let's see what boxes and boxes you can make yourself, especially since the owner of this year, the Black Water Snake, loves hardworking people who know how to create things with their own hands, including gift boxes.

  • Simple but beautiful box

What do you need to make a postcard box?

Regardless of the chosen idea of creating an original paper box with your own hands, the main material is postcards. You should also choose floss threads that match well in color.

To make holes, it is best to use an awl; you can take a needle with a wide eye. In addition, you will also need scissors, a ruler and a pencil.

Attention! Floss threads can be replaced with regular strong threads or decorative lace.

Puzzle box with a secret - a great gift for a child

My friends architects Lorenzo Bini and Roberta Pezzalla did this small project for a very young and dynamic client: Lorenzo's 6-month-old goddaughter.
They made a secret box so that a child could use it for a lifetime to keep small, personal, precious things. So they created the UnaBox, taking inspiration from an Indian box that had a clever secret with 2 rotating lids. The measurements of the box are based on the golden ratio of the sides (golden ratio), and it will only allow access to patient and curious people, since it contains a cunning secret; many adults have tried to open it and failed. Here's a description of how to do it yourself!

Materials

Hardwood 27.5cm x 57.5cm x 1.5cm thick

Our original box used the finest Italian olive wood.

Thin wooden pin 3 mm x 20 mm as a locking pin.

Screw 4 mm x 60 mm for rotating the central parts

Wood glue

Tools

Band saw or small handsaw

Drilling machine or drill

Sandpaper of various grits.

Cut out the parts

The box is made from 11 pieces cut from a single board, the dimensions shown above, plus a screw and pin for the locking secret.

To make the pieces, you can give the order to a good carpenter, or cut the pieces yourself using a small handsaw or bandsaw.

After production, sand everything with sandpaper of different grits.

Assemble the lid and box

Once you have the blanks, drill a hole in part 11 and a slot in part 9 for your screw to move through (to cut the slot, drill a hole in each end and then cut a slot through them). Also drill smaller holes for the retaining pin. Drill both holes in the two mating pieces placed together to make sure they line up.

Figure C shows how the parts of the box fit together. If the parts are cut accurately, then parts 1-5 should come together and hold together even without glue. When gluing, use small clamps to hold the pieces while the glue dries (Figure D). Fold parts 6-8 and glue them to the base of the box part 1. Also glue parts 9 and 10 of the locking lid. Once the glue has dried and you have removed the clamps, drill out pieces 6-8 that will hold the center screw (Figure E).

Finally, finish the box by rubbing it with a good natural wax and polishing it. This will maximally show the texture of the wood, give it a good smell, and a pleasant sensation from the touch, which children love so much.

Learn the secret

A closed box does not give a clue, so you need to know its secret. You must remove the wooden pin and rotate piece 11 back so that the rest of the cover has enough room to slide back as well. The entire lid assembly will then have enough room to rotate on its axis to open the box (Images F – I).

So far we have built two such puzzles: the first from olive wood, the second from cherry. If you make your own secret box , the architects would like to hear from you at

A very interesting, useful and developing site for you. I've never heard of such a puzzle. You will definitely succeed. Wish you luck.

Thank you very much for the kind words.

Good day, dear colleague. Very good, informative and positive article. We need more relevant posts like this! Sincerely, Andrey Shemonaev.

Your site is good - it makes the brain work.

This is what I was counting on when I was planning the site; it should make a person think.

Yes. If only I could create such a box myself... A well-made one would make a great gift! My wife has a similar puzzle. Only the opening principle is much simpler. But some people rack their brains to no avail) a purchased box. And where you write “golden ratio”, do you mean “golden ratio”?

Yes, of course, I meant to say “golden aspect ratio”

I was ordered similar toys, we can make them with pleasure [email protected]

Well, Andrey, your advertisement has been placed. Maybe someone will really need such puzzles - boxes with a secret.

A very interesting article, the article reveals the structure of the box with a secret. Based on this description, any even more or less intelligent person will be able to sketch a box to suit their size and make it.

You are right Vladislav, knowing the device, circuit and principle, any competent craftsman will be able to repeat this box with a secret.

Option 2

Box with a secret with a volumetric heart

To make a box you will need: 1. 3 colored sheets of paper; 2. 2 sheets of thick cardboard measuring 24 x 12 cm and 17.4 x 17.4 cm; 3. Satin ribbon - 45 cm; 4. Ruler, pencil, scissors, curly scissors, double-sided adhesive tape (can be replaced with PVA glue) and Moment Crystal glue, bulk tape, stamp.

Let's start making the box: 1. Cut out a rectangle measuring 24 x 12 cm from cardboard. Make folds along the 24 cm side at a distance from the edge of 3 cm, 9 cm, 15 cm, 21 cm. On the sides of the 12 cm side we make folds at a distance of 3 cm from the edge of each side. We make cuts and glue the corners. We cut out rectangles in the middle of the bottom of the box so that we get two half-boxes and a bottom. See photo.

2. From the second piece of cardboard measuring 17.4 x 17.4 cm, we also make folds at a distance of 5.8 cm on all sides. This figure was taken for a reason; this is the optimal size for the box to open well. If you take other sizes for your box, do not forget to take into account the fact that the inner box should be slightly smaller than the outer one in order to open well. Glue the walls of the inner box together as shown in the photo.

3. Glue the inner box in the center of the outer box.

4. The base of the box with the secret is ready, then we decorate it at our discretion. I cut six 5.5 x 2.3 cm rectangles and two 5.5 x 5.5 cm squares from colored paper for the outside design of the box. And six squares of other paper with figured scissors for decorating the inner box, also measuring 5.5 x 5.5 cm.

5. The color of the paper matched, but for the interior decoration the paper seemed a little boring to me and I decorated it randomly with flower-shaped stamps.

How to make an original card and spectacular gift wrapping at the same time? Nothing could be easier! You just need to cut them out correctly, decorate them tastefully and turn them into a surprise box with your own hands! This small box, also called a magic box, reveals its secrets as soon as you remove the lid. The inner walls of such a postcard are decorated with photographs or simply good wishes for the addressee. How they can be decorated for different holidays, how to fill them and how to decorate them, is more detailed in this article. And also a step-by-step master class on how you can make a surprise box with your own hands, having 2 sheets of scrapbooking paper, some decor and one free evening.

This octagonal secret gift box will be an original and unique gift for the one you love.

The box looks like a small gift, but when you remove the lid, the sides of the box fall down, creating many pockets where you can place photos, sayings and other goodies.

I've always been a fan of square secret boxes, but I'd like to try making an eight-sided version to have more pockets for photos and attachments. I made a template and am attaching it here for printing. They are very quick and easy to put together! The templates will easily fit on a standard A4 sheet, so printing them is not a problem. Thus, you can print the templates directly on the paper or cardboard that you will use. If you want to make the template larger, simply print it and enlarge it to the size that is convenient for you.

The process of creating a box is very easy. You'll spend most of your time adding photos and decorating the gift. Your lover is bound to love this gift, prepared especially for him with all his soul and tenderness!

How to make a box with a secret from paper for a gift. Materials:

  • Eight sheets of A4 cardboard or paper with a pattern (the main thing is that the colors match). Tip: The box will be more stable and strong if two sheets (walls and lid) are made of heavier cardboard.
  • Scissors.
  • Glue
  • Six paper clips
  • Optional: tools to help you make even folds (bone stack)
  • Photos, stickers, sayings, decorations and more!

Progress:

  1. Get started by downloading templates by clicking on the links below. You will open PDF files for printing (Adobe reader recommended). Place the paper and cardboard you are going to use into the printer to print the template. Once everything is printed, cut out the templates. Cut out the lid template along the thick line, since the thin line is for the fold.
  • DIY paper box, diagram of the bottom layer
  • DIY paper box, middle layer
  • DIY paper box, top layer
  • DIY paper box, lid
  1. The next step is to bend the cut out templates into a star shape. You will be able to do this most accurately if you use a bone stack, which will ensure a nice, even fold. As soon as you bend the part, straighten it and bend it again to “spread” the bend. This is necessary so that the walls of the box fall down when you remove the box lid. Once you have all the pieces bent, you can start assembling the octagonal box. Apply glue to the parts of the box, attach one to the other in ascending order, starting with the bottom (largest part). Then attach the middle one, the smallest one at the top. Apply glue only in the middle of the star, allowing the parts to move freely. The base of the box is ready for decoration.
  2. The next step is making the lid. Stiff cardboard works best for this, but if you notice, I still used patterned paper. I printed the template onto cardstock and then glued the patterned paper onto it to make the lid stronger. Make the first two folds as shown in the picture.
  3. Next, bend the “tabs” on every other piece of the octagon.
  4. The tabs of one side should be hidden in the folds of the next. Use glue to hold everything together and secure everything with paper clips until the glue dries and sticks all the pieces together.
  5. Almost all octagonal secret boxes will be decorative in nature. I gave this box to my husband. The topmost layer is dedicated to our wedding. There are photographs on several walls, our vows on one wall, and on one wall I glued two rings with our wedding date. The middle layer consists of photographs of our daily lives. And the bottom layer is dedicated to photographs of our children. Each layer moves us through the time of our relationship, starting with the wedding on the top layer, to the present time - the layer on top of which are our children. Get creative! You are limited only by your imagination! I can come up with different layer themes, and you can too, I'm sure of it!

Learn how to make beautiful paper boxes with your own hands

To make a classic small box you will need:

  • ruler
  • scissors
  • cardboard or thick paper (15 by 15 cm squares (for the lid) and another slightly smaller one for the box itself)

For this version of the box, we do not need glue, therefore, in order for the sides of the craft to stick together better, it is better to use thick paper rather than cardboard.

The box of the proposed size will not be very large and is designed for a gift measuring approximately 4-5 cm. If you want to pack a larger gift, then you need to use larger sheets as a basis. If it suddenly turns out that the box is too large and the gift in it is dangling unsightly, you can put wrapping paper or just bright napkins on the bottom.

Below are the diagrams for making this box.
How to make a classic small box:
1) First you need to draw diagonal lines and bend the corners to the center. Turn the folded corners to the opposite fold line, and then to the nearest fold line. There is a square in the center of the workpiece - this will be the bottom of our box.

2) Next, on both sides of the intended diagonal, along the very first deflections, we make cuts (up to the length of the designated square in the middle). We fold the cut edges along the curves - this is how we made the walls for the box. We bend the sharp ends of the walls inward, towards the middle of the square. Use the remaining unfolded corners of the paper to grab the folded ends, turning them inward. This will be a lid box.

3) We make the second box according to the same scheme. Due to the fact that the square of paper was a centimeter smaller, the box will also be smaller and fit well inside.

4) The box is ready!
All that remains is to wrap the gift in it and decorate the top with a bow or openwork braid. To make a cone-shaped box you will need:

  • thick paper of any size
  • compass
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • foil

Below is a diagram for making a cone-shaped box.

How to make a cone-shaped box:
1) Using a compass, draw a circle on paper (the larger its diameter, the larger the box).

2) Divide the drawn circle exactly in half (if you want the cone to be sharper, you can even divide it not in half, but into quarters). Roll up the “ball” and glue the edges.

3) The cone-shaped box is packed after the gift is placed there. After this, you will need to take a piece of foil and cover the round surface with it.

4) You can decorate the finished box at your own discretion, for example, decorate it with ribbons or disguise it as a New Year tree.
To make a pyramid box you will need:

  • square of thick paper 18x18
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • scissors
  • hole puncher
  • thin ribbon for decoration

Below is a diagram for making this craft.
How to make a pyramid box:
1) Draw a square diagonally and in half. Fold the corners toward the center, and then from the center of the edge to the folds of the center square. Draw even arcs, as in the diagram.

2) Use scissors to cut out unnecessary corners, punch holes on the rounded ends of the prism and stretch the tape through them.

3) Place the gift in the center of the box. All that remains is to fold the edges and tie the ribbon on a bow. Our pyramid box is ready!

4) Tip: if you need to make many identical boxes for gifts, you don’t have to draw out a new template each time, but simply put the finished blank on cardboard and cut it out along the contour.
To make a paper box with a secret you will need:

  • glue,
  • scissors,
  • two squares of thick paper (one of them, for the lid, should be slightly larger)
  • ribbons, braid and beads for decoration

Why is the box called “with a secret”?
The thing is that it holds its shape only as long as there is a lid on it. If the gift is opened, the packaging disintegrates by itself. How to make a paper box with a secret:
1) First we make the bottom: we draw the sheet into nine even squares, cut off the corners. 2) We bend the ends of the resulting cross inward, forming a box.

3) The inner surface of the box can be decorated to your liking (write congratulations, glue drawings, etc.)

4) The box with the secret is ready! All that remains is to put the gift inside, assemble the walls together and carefully tie it with a bow.

Decor of themed boxes for different holidays

Magic box can be made for any holiday and even without it. You can make such a thing with your own hands and give it as a small token of attention without any reason at all, but just for a good mood. For example, decorate the inside of the sides with bags of different tea or coffee, place a cupcake in the center and present it to a friend or work colleague before the start of the working day. If another important date is approaching, and you are painfully looking for a suitable gift, then here are some thematic ideas for different holidays that may inspire you to make a holiday box with your own hands.

For a birthday

The most traditional holiday for such gifts. Even if you are giving just money inside, you can play with the idea itself in these simple ways: - place a photo of the birthday person in the center, and write wishes as a keepsake on the side walls; - make the box “multi-walled”, that is, glue more walls inside, only 5mm. narrower, and on each side stick photographs united by one idea (for example, “the smiles of all friends” or “the best photos of this year”), you will get a real mini-album;

- if there are no photographs, you can simply place inside a decorative composition of butterflies or flowers on springs that will jump out when opened.

New Year's

Paper in winter colors, Christmas pictures, blue or red stamp paint, tinsel decor, confetti and small Christmas tree decorations - all this will look cute and harmonious. Another idea is to make a small box (in the master class a diagram is given for the 10x10 format, but here you will need to take a size of 5x5cm, no larger), place a candy inside, tie a satin ribbon on the outside and hang it on the Christmas tree as a toy. Any child will be sincerely delighted to find their favorite treat inside the surprise. Also, a magic box can be an excellent packaging for a handmade Christmas tree decoration, for example, a painted glass ball or a bell, hidden under the lid inside the box.

Wedding

Ideal and always appropriate packaging for a wedding gift if you decide to give money. Wedding magic box will help you add a hand-made element to your usual gift and stand out in the crowd of guests. To complete it according to the master class below, take cardboard with delicate decor, pastel colors, prepare lace and paper or fabric flowers in light shades. All this fits perfectly with the theme of the holiday.

Easter

Magic box will be a suitable packaging for any Easter souvenir. In order to place a painted egg inside, you can line the bottom with sisal or paper shavings. If you want to put the cake inside, you need to line the bottom and walls with baking paper. You can decorate the walls with decorative stickers, pictures with painted chickens, and thematic inscriptions. There is a whole collection of images of pre-revolutionary Easter cards that are perfect for such decor.

Exclusive packaging

If you want your gift to be completely special, come visit us at Boffo! This season we have created colorful floral arrangements and unique gift sets in baskets woven from dried flowers and shaped like cute cups. Here you can choose a basket of the color scheme you need and assemble your own unique set. Surprise and delight your loved one by presenting him with several types of tea in such a cup! It will be unforgettable!

To make the box you will need:

  • colored felt;
  • ruler, glue or thread with a needle;
  • scissors.

Let's get to work.

  1. Take a piece of felt and cut out a cross from it.

  2. Decorate the front side with various applications.

  3. Lift up the sides and glue or stitch them together.

  4. You can make holes with a hole punch and fasten the sides with braid or cord.

The box is ready!

You can use this homemade box with a secret to store various necessary little things, as well as as a gift gift wrapping .

To make a box with a secret, you will need six sheets of paper, preferably thicker. One sheet for the outer part of the box, a contrasting sheet for the lid and 4 sheets for the inner boxes. Cut as follows (all measurements are in inches - 1 inch equals 2.54 cm):

  • outer part of the box: 6 x 11;
  • box cover: 8.5 x 8.5;
  • 4 inner boxes: 8 x 8;

Method for making a box with a secret

Let's start making the box with 4 inner boxes. They are all made according to the same scheme. See below for step-by-step manufacturing photos.

1. On the wrong side of our paper square, draw two lines from corners to corners.

2. Now we fold the corners to the center of the intersection of the lines on all four sides (like an envelope), and then unfold them again.

3. Then we divide the distance between the center and the fold in half and again fold along this line on all four sides - these are the sides of our box.

For clarity, everything in the figure is outlined with a marker, but this is not necessary.

4. Then cut out the four shaded triangles and get the following:

5. Next, cut along the drawn arrows

6. Now let’s assemble our box. He does everything without glue, you just need to firmly press all the corners and folds (although, if you wish, you can use glue).

In this way, all 4 inner boxes and the lid are made. The lid of the box, as well as the box itself, can be decorated according to your taste and desire.

Next, we begin assembling our secret box.

Take a sheet of paper measuring 15.25 x 287 cm and bend it in the center, then divide both halves in half again and bend it again. Thus, we got 4 rectangles, each of which will have one box. We place our boxes on them as shown in the figure and glue them.

6. Glue our blanks onto the box, don’t forget to glue it in the middle and back away from the edges.

7. To decorate the box, we will make a three-dimensional heart. To do this, cut out five hearts of different sizes and glue them on top of each other in decreasing order using bulk tape.

A beautiful handmade gift is wonderful, but any surprise will look even more attractive in stylish packaging. Dull plastic bags with flowers are a thing of the past; beautiful things require beautiful boxes and packaging bags. Of course, they can be purchased in specialized stores, however, it is much more pleasant to make such things yourself. Today we will learn how to make stylish paper boxes in a step-by-step DIY tutorial. They can be used for wrapping gifts, or just for storing some things at home.

Tips from needlewomen

Making boxes from postcards with your own hands is also called scrapbooking. In this area, needlewomen have long created a list of tips that will help even a novice craftswoman cope with the task:

  • You should definitely select cards according to style (for example, you should not combine New Year’s images with flowers, it will look ridiculous);
  • Before starting work, you must create a sketch of the future box, as well as count the number of elements and make patterns;
  • if the cardboard is too thick, then punctures are best done with an awl;
  • floss threads are most suitable for sewing together elements, but if they are not available, then you can use ordinary sewing threads, but folded 3-5 times;
  • Do not neglect the decor - the use of various decorations will help create a real masterpiece.

What's the best way to pack a gift for the New Year?

The process of giving is always associated with the emotions exchanged between the donor and the recipient.
There will be many times more positive emotions if the gift is in beautiful and original packaging. They are not even in a hurry to open it - and not because they are not interested in what is inside. An interestingly packaged gift indicates that the person spent his attention and time on preparation, which makes the gift very valuable

How to wrap a present beautifully:

  • put it in a ready-made special package;
  • wrap everything in gift paper;
  • hide the donated item in the original box.

There’s nothing even to say about the first method, but the other two will help you share your warmest and kindest emotions with your loved ones along with a gift.

Magic box is an unusual postcard and, oddly enough, absolutely universal! It is ideal for small gifts. Here are some suitable ideas. 1. The most ordinary money, which is so often given to everyone around, will look much more interesting if it is rolled up in the form of a scroll, tied with a satin ribbon and placed inside such a postcard, surrounded by a variety of three-dimensional decor - flowers, butterflies, rhinestones, and inside, on the walls , write your wishes and leave signatures as a keepsake. In the master class at the end of the article you will find a description of how you can quickly and beautifully make a mount for money inside.

2. This packaging is ideal for gift certificates for various salons and stores. You can attach it to the bottom in exactly the same way as money. If the card is hard, then you can make an envelope-pocket for it at the bottom or on one of the side walls. 3. Jewelry or other jewelry will look great in the magic box and will certainly be a real surprise for the recipient of the gift. You can attach a paper cake with a removable lid to the bottom, or simply build a small pillow covered in velvet with your own hands. 4. It’s also nice to place a CD or flash drive in such a beautiful postcard. For discs, a pocket is most often made on the side wall using scrapbooking paper. In the future, in such packaging it will be convenient not only to give, but also to store any important and memorable little things.
