All-terrain vehicle from VAZ ✅: tracked caracat with a box from Lada 2108 with your own hands, drawings, 2109, Lada 2106, 2107, engine, eight, 2109 on low-pressure tires

DIY all-terrain vehicle from VAZ-2107

The guy converted his Zhiguli into a powerful all-terrain vehicle on low-pressure tires, we suggest you familiarize yourself with the homemade product in more detail.

The author had an idea to build a homemade all-terrain vehicle based on the VAZ-2107 for off-road travel.

The car body remained unchanged, only the suspension had to be modified to accommodate large low-pressure tires. The wheels on the all-terrain vehicle are “treads” made from used tires from KF 97 agricultural machinery. A new tread was cut out on the old tires, thus the weight of the tires was significantly reduced, and good treads increased the cross-country ability of the all-terrain vehicle.

The all-terrain vehicle has rear-wheel drive, but in addition, in addition to the standard gearbox, another Zhiguli gearbox was installed, which made it possible to reduce speed and increase traction. In the rear axle, the differential is welded. All parts and components were used only from Zhiguli.

The original VAZ engine, 1.5, remains unchanged; its power is more than enough for such an all-terrain vehicle.

Wheels converted from Zhiguli wheels.

The homemade all-terrain vehicle has excellent cross-country ability in mud, slush, and swampy terrain (it rides without straining); to drive on snow, you need to install skis on the front wheels. The all-terrain vehicle was not tested for buoyancy, but it should float on the water due to its large wheels.

We also recommend looking at another interesting homemade product - a tracked all-terrain vehicle based on the VAZ-2106

Do-it-yourself tracked all-terrain vehicle, I’m trying to create a friction steering mechanism from scratch

The idea was to try to make an “all-terrain vehicle”

with a friction mechanism for the turntable, since I don’t really like the rotation due to the inferential, and since even a used friction mechanism for the turntable costs the same as a used VAZ 2106, I decided to try to make it from scratch with my own hands, but since I don’t have a lathe, and a nearby turner, too, there were quite a few difficulties during creation, which led to an increase in creation time and many factors that cast doubt on the very design of the friction steering flange.

Of course, the design has already been redone. The gearbox from the Dnieper is already in the other direction and there is a chain tensioner, and a different engine will be installed, but the clutch mechanism itself remains almost the same, after testing I decided to install stiffer springs, and also figured out how to implement the tension of the springs so that to strengthen the pressure of the friction linings to the driven drum, the linings themselves are 4 brake pads from a car mounted on iron discs with a diameter of 200 mm, there were a lot of ideas on how to implement the engagement of the driven part with the drive drum, and so I settled on brake pads from a car, they seem to have The safety margin is large and the friction coefficient is not bad.

Which is better - wheels or tracks?

Before building a homemade all-terrain vehicle, you need to decide on the type of chassis. The tracked design ensures uniform load distribution, which has a positive effect on the vehicle’s maneuverability. The disadvantage is the increased weight of the propulsion unit and difficulties with control, since turning requires the installation of side clutches and additional levers to control the clutches.

Wheeled vehicles are controlled by a standard mechanism that uses extended steering rods.

Wheeled all-terrain vehicles are equipped with low-pressure pneumatic tires borrowed from agricultural machinery. The suspension uses leaf springs that can support the weight of the structure. If you need to manufacture a maneuverable and lightweight all-terrain vehicle, it is recommended to use the “karakat” design. But in this case, it will not be possible to install a closed body from a passenger car.

Types of all-terrain vehicles

Equipment for off-road driving is usually divided into light and heavy. An example of a lightweight all-terrain vehicle is the Unex model or the Tarus 2X2 all-terrain vehicle. Heavy all-terrain vehicles include devices such as, for example, Unkor.

All all-terrain vehicles are classified according to their specialization. There are tracked models, hovercraft, with four and three axles, with all-wheel drive, and on low-pressure tires.

On caterpillar tracks

Tracks provide better off-road capabilities compared to wheels. Even the narrowest tracks have an advantage over tire-mounted wheels. However, tracked models have a disadvantage - they consume more fuel. In addition, they are slower.

An example of a tracked all-terrain vehicle is the Tinger model. These are Russian-made products, although with a foreign name. The device is capable of functioning in two modes - ATV and snowmobile.

Required qualities of a snowmobile on tracks:

  • high maneuverability;
  • light weight;
  • high cross-country ability;
  • adaptability to work in cold climates.

On low pressure tires

Thanks to the characteristics described above, all-terrain vehicles of this type can easily overcome swamps and mud. The disadvantage of this type of technology is its low speed. In addition, such tires are not suitable for rocky terrain due to the risk of punctures.

Amphibious all-terrain vehicles

An amphibious vehicle is a vehicle capable of independent movement on water surfaces and on solid ground. This category includes models with screw, wheel or water jet drive.

Note! On land, such an all-terrain vehicle develops a significantly lower speed than on water. Varieties of all-terrain amphibious vehicles are hovercrafts

They use propellers as engines. Sometimes the tilt of the air cushion itself is used to generate the driving force.

Varieties of all-terrain amphibious vehicles are hovercraft. They use propellers as engines. Sometimes the tilt of the air cushion itself is used to generate the driving force.

The worst version of an amphibian from a functional point of view is a wheeled one. A wheeled amphibian's maneuverability on water is poor, since turns are carried out by the wheels.

With three bridges

All-terrain vehicles with three axles are divided into 2 types:

  1. Small-sized all-terrain vehicles that can accommodate up to 4 passengers. The bridges in such devices are located symmetrically. The distance between the wheel axles is approximately the same. Compact all-terrain vehicles cope with off-road conditions much better compared to vehicles with 2 axles. Low-pressure tires further increase cross-country ability.
  2. Heavy equipment, which is an analogue of three-axle army vehicles. The axles are asymmetrical relative to each other: there is one axle in front and two in the rear. The center distance at the rear is small compared to the distance to the front axle. Heavy all-terrain vehicles are used to transport large groups of hunters and fishermen. This technique is popular among organizers of hunting or fishing trips.

With four bridges

Vehicles with four axles have very high cross-country ability. The number of wheels has a direct impact on the ability to overcome off-road conditions. The more wheels, the lower the ground pressure. As a result, the machine gets stuck less in soft soil.

The market mainly offers small-sized models that can accommodate up to 4-6 people. However, there are also heavy all-terrain vehicles with four axles, which can accommodate many more passengers.

With all-wheel drive

Models with all-wheel drive have the best cross-country ability. This quality is achieved thanks to the design of the transmission, in which the torque generated by the vehicle's engine is transmitted to all wheels. Twin wheels on axle shafts are counted as 1 wheel. There are different layouts of all-wheel drive all-terrain vehicles, including 2x2, 4x4, 6x6, 8x8.

Step-by-step instructions for DIY assembly

Before starting assembly, drawings of the machine frame should be developed. The documentation indicates attachment points to the body and places for installing suspension spring brackets. On wheeled vehicles, the steering mechanism is mounted on the frame, and a cardan shaft is used to connect to the column. To build an all-terrain vehicle, you will need a channel and additional units from vehicles with an all-wheel drive system (for example, a transfer gearbox and drive axles).

All-terrain vehicle on wheels

A brief algorithm for building a wheeled all-terrain vehicle:

  1. Mark the steel profile, the elements are welded on the jig. The design provides points for mounting the transfer gearbox, outboard bearing supports, and spring mounts. At the top edge, brackets are welded to secure the body.
  2. Cover the frame with a primer and then paint to protect the metal from corrosion.
  3. Mount the leaf springs to which the axles are attached to the stepladders. If you plan to use an independent front suspension, then it is necessary to mount points for installing coil springs, shock absorbers and levers. In this case, drive is carried out only to the rear wheels.
  4. Install a transfer gearbox, which is connected to the main pairs in the axles using driveshafts modified in length.
  5. Modify wheel rims on which lightweight tires are installed (for example, “flat tires” based on tires from agricultural machinery).
  6. Install the car body onto the frame, ensuring the connection of the steering mechanism with the swivel wheels. Mount the driveshaft between the standard gearbox and the transfer gearbox.
  7. Attach additional guards to protect against dirt, and then check the operation of the all-terrain vehicle.

Creation of a vehicle based on a walk-behind tractor

The engine, transmission and other components of this small-scale mechanization tool will be useful for building a snowmobile. The consistency of functional components makes it easier to create a quality design on a new frame. To create a karakat, the equipment is equipped with appropriate tires and a comfortable seat. The handles with the fuel supply and brake control drives can be left with minimal changes.

Drawings of homemade all-terrain vehicles

Design documentation can be found in whole or in part on the Internet. Changes are added to ready-made solutions taking into account personal preferences.

Build process

After manufacturing the frame, they proceed to installing the rear axle.

Next install:

  • suspension elements;
  • steering;
  • wheels;
  • braking system;
  • motor;
  • Gearbox, lever and rocker;
  • armchair;
  • lighting technology.

Field tests check the performance of the all-terrain vehicle.

Tracks for an all-terrain vehicle based on a walk-behind tractor

If you have a powerful enough power unit, you can create a homemade tracked all-terrain vehicle. Tracks are made of metal plates with welded rings. Original components can be made from epoxy resin with a frame made of polymer reinforcement. The prepared mixture is poured into the mold. After hardening, the caterpillars are collected.

Homemade all-terrain vehicle from VAZ

A village craftsman built an original all-terrain vehicle for off-road forest travel, hunting, fishing, picking berries and mushrooms.

The all-terrain vehicle frame is made of channels, axles and a transfer case from an UAZ are installed. A VAZ body was installed on the frame along with the engine, gearbox and attachments.

The wheels are made from old GAZ-66 tires, with new treads cut out on the tires.

As a result of the alteration, ground clearance has increased significantly

The all-terrain vehicle moves well in deep snow.

Also, the all-terrain vehicle can move and stay on the water due to its large wheels. The photo shows how the all-terrain vehicle crosses the river.

As a result, the guy made such a real SUV from old Lada cars! The result was a very good all-terrain vehicle, although fuel consumption doubled.

Conqueror of the taiga

Life in the Siberian forests is so harsh that having your own SUV is not a luxury, but a real necessity; another thing is that not everyone can buy such a car.

The exception is local craftsmen who were able to put half of the VAZ-2106 body on tractor wheels, along with its engine and a cargo compartment attached to the rear, hastily welded from old metal sheets.

Other features of the pickup include reinforced suspension, the use of axles from an old UAZ, as well as benches for transporting passengers.

Another tanker from Yuzhnouralsk

A similar engineering feat was accomplished by a resident of Yuzhnouralsk, who placed his outdated Zhiguli on a large welded platform and tracks.

And in order to demonstrate the capabilities of the modernized VAZ, the self-taught mechanic asked his friends to shoot and publish an amateur video online, which clearly shows how easily the all-terrain vehicle overcomes the tests of snowdrifts and roadside slush.

What do I care about snow, what do I like heat, what do I like torrential rain?

Russian craftsmen designed the real beast, equipping the body of a VAZ-2107 with low-pressure wheels borrowed from the all-terrain KamAZ, and posted a video of its practical tests online. And judging by this video, the SUV will not only be immune to winter surprises, but also to floods, because it easily forded a shallow river.

At the same time, commentators doubted the efficiency of the Zhiguli engine, as well as the economy of such a solution, but they turned out to be right, because the developer himself indicated a consumption of 30-40 liters.

All-terrain vehicle from a small car - OKA or the first VAZs

One of the best ways to create true homemade all-terrain vehicles is to use existing design. This way you don’t have to create an idea for the frame, interior, controls - everything is already at hand. If you want to make wheeled vehicles with enormous cross-country ability, you should carry out the following serious transformations in the technical part:

  • completely discard the chassis of the old car, install powerful springs and long-travel suspensions;
  • find large wheels (you can use ready-made solutions for large SUVs);
  • replace the engine and gearbox with your own hands, it is advisable to use a transfer case for all-wheel drive;
  • collect all this happiness and conduct tests, not forgetting to film them.

It all sounds simple enough, but in reality creating such an SUV will be extremely difficult. It is especially interesting to conduct tests. You can find many photos of such machines on the Internet, but not all of them turn out to be successful. At the time of testing, it is recommended to limit the speed to 30 kilometers per hour. It’s good to take small machines for the production of a homemade all-terrain vehicle, because the base is very short, which has a good effect on cross-country ability.

Snow blower from Zhiguli? Why not!

The next VAZ was put on a caterpillar track by an enthusiast from Barnaul, who decided to re-equip his old “seven” in this way.

However, unlike previous modifications, the author of this project decided to go even further by equipping the front part of the Zhiguli with a wide shovel, which made it possible to use the car for snow removal.

It is worth noting that this is not the first creation of the master, who has already created a tracked all-terrain vehicle with an electric motor, and not the last, because the creative Barnaul resident has plans for a swamp vehicle.

Little is known about this masterpiece, although its authors have opened a separate YouTube channel for their brainchild. So, given: a VAZ-2108 body, a welded rectangular frame, UAZ locking axles, as well as a gearbox and an 8-valve engine from a VAZ-2115, which replaced a less powerful manual transmission and an engine from OKI.

Solution: a fairly powerful swamp vehicle, the power units of which may not withstand truly serious and dangerous off-road conditions. But it looks impressive, yes.

As well as long side doors, the spare wheel is located in the trunk niche. What you have to put up with is that the luggage compartment is small, only 270 liters.

Universal all-terrain vehicle for village life

It all started with the fact that a family that moved to the village had to think about the future fate of their “six” after 20 years of its operation.

As a result, it was decided to put the VAZ body on the frame of a UAZ purchased for 9 thousand rubles, the owners of which were going to hand it over for disassembly. It is noteworthy that the latter’s units were also used, and they turned out to be in fairly good condition.

As a result, after tinkering a little with these two cars, the resourceful family acquired a universal SUV, using it for clearing snow, transporting firewood and plowing the garden.
