Homemade SUVs based on UAZ
Making a car of this brand unrecognizable with your own hands is not so difficult. For drastic changes you will need:
- Set of aluminum sheets with corrugated edging for cladding.
- Metal and rubber pads.
- Fixing screws.
- Synthetic rugs.
- Foam rubber.
- Triplex glass.
- Flexible plastic.
- Tools (keys, screwdrivers, accessories).
A homemade SUV, if all manipulations are carried out correctly, will come out no worse in terms of characteristics than its expensive analogues.
Where to begin?
First, you should take care of strengthening the outer skin and frame of the car. It is best to use steel pipes designed for high loads. It is also necessary to take into account the provision of insulation from moisture, especially if you plan to create not just an SUV, but a swamp vehicle.
If it is impossible to weld pipes, you can use the original UAZ body. Sometimes it is modified to give the desired configuration. The side pillars, roof and bottom will require mandatory strengthening.
Sheathing
A homemade SUV is made from a UAZ car by first removing the old trim. Simultaneously with the reinforcement of the body, a new structure made of aluminum alloy is installed, which is resistant to weather disasters and corrosion. When choosing sheets, you should select a material whose thickness is at least one and a half millimeters. The new casing is attached using screws, which are fixed in the frame with special heads. Rubber pads are used to smooth out all unevenness and remove backlash.
If the new housing is installed incorrectly, the structure may be completely vulnerable to mechanical and natural influences. Therefore, installation of the trim should be carried out carefully and carefully, checking all stages, since this part is the most finicky when creating a jeep with your own hands based on an UAZ.
Peculiarities
When making a homemade SUV, you need to pay attention to the camber of the wheels when assembling the bridge; you should first weld the lower bearing elements. They are then bolted to the frame. Taking into account the operating characteristics, the type of wheels or even tracks is selected.
Torque is transmitted via a driveshaft from the power unit to the rear axle. Such a unit is advantageous in that it is easy to maintain and repair. First you need to make sure that the mounting slots match each other. Otherwise, you should make the required number of holes.
Finally, you will need to test the updated machine several times. After identifying problem areas, they must be checked and all problems eliminated so that driving a homemade SUV is safe. Almost the entire modernization process is carried out according to a single scheme. From the original, only the power unit and body will be needed.
Let's sum it up
If you decide that your car collection is missing something exclusive, you can do different things. First of all, you can take advantage of buying a vintage car for several million dollars at auction. If this method doesn’t suit you, and you’ve always dreamed of driving a homemade SUV, it’s time to start creating something unusual and amazing.
Buy an old GAZ or UAZ, Niva or even a regular Zhiguli and think about how to turn this car into a dream for a lover of off-road and efficient vehicles. You can do this quite simply, especially with the involvement of certain specialists. However, if you initially buy an SUV, then you won’t have to do too many modifications to it.
“JEEP” – RELIABLE AND SIMPLE
It used to be that S. Khopshanosov helped stranded fellow motorists by pushing their cars with the front bumper of his all-terrain vehicle.
In his native Armenia, he climbed on it to a height of up to 3000 m above sea level, overcoming off-road conditions, rocky screes, and slopes of up to 30°.
The hardships of the journey are easily tolerated in the comfortable and cozy interior of the car. In hot weather, you can slide any of the four side windows to bring in fresh air. Or, if this is not enough, open the sunroof.
There are many other simple and original design solutions in the car. Here, for example, is how the body works. It consists of a space frame and outer skin. The frame, designed to withstand significant torsional and bending loads, is welded from square and rectangular steel pipes. The less loaded hood, doors and rear window are made of channels, tees and angles connected with rivets.
Rice. 3. Modification of the rear axle:
1 – the lower support cup of the suspension spring is removed. Instead, a spring cushion is welded, 2 – a mounting bracket for the upper jet rod (removed), 3 – a left spring cushion (welded).
Rice. 4. Adapter
The floor in the cabin and the hood trim are made of corrugated duralumin sheets 2 mm thick. The body trim is made of smooth sheets 1.5 mm thick. They are attached to the frame with M5 screws with countersunk heads. The joints of the sheets are hidden by rubber and metal overlays.
The inside of the cabin is lined with a thin layer of foam rubber and soft plastic. Triplex glazing, as well as the doors, are equipped with rubber seals from cars from the Volzhsky Automobile Plant. The floor is covered with rubber and synthetic mats. All this reduces the noise level in the cabin and prevents the penetration of dust.
The instrument panel and glove box are homemade. The front seats with reclining backrests are “Zhiguli” ones. The rear passenger seat, designed for three people, is homemade and has a fixed backrest. Behind it, at the bottom, is a fuel tank with a capacity of 45 liters (from a UAZ) with a neck leading outward above the rear bumper. Above the tank is an internal trunk. Access to it through the rear window.
The principle of “simplicity plus reliability” has also extended to the power plant: the engine and gearbox are taken together with the units that serve them from the Zhiguli-VAZ-2101. Only the paper oil filter has been replaced with one that is cheaper to operate. inertial from ZAZ-968.
MINI-JEEP: PULL, NOT PUSH!
Cars of the “jeep” type have always attracted amateur car designers with their pronounced functionality: as they say, a jeep is a car “par excellence”. And, of course, the simplicity of external forms and the complete absence of double-curvature surfaces - and, therefore, the ease of manufacturing the body from any sheet material, spacious interior space. In short, a car with the appearance of a jeep will always be preferable for those who are starting to create their very first vehicle. I decided to develop a car with a body like a jeep. However, when drawing the car, it turned out that the simplicity of its external forms is only apparent and creating a truly original body is very, very difficult. All my “designer” delights ultimately led to the appearance on whatman paper of a clearly handicraft-looking machine. In the end, I had to turn to classical models, taking the famous “Jeep” of the forties as a basis. And in fact, can I, in general, an amateur in auto design, compete with the professionals who created a kind of reference look for this vehicle.
I intended to design my car with the widest use of components and assemblies of the SZD motorized stroller. A comparison of its track and that of the Jeep revealed a dimensional conversion factor, after which the contours of my car appeared on the drawing board, practically repeating the contours of the prototype on the appropriate scale. True, to my great regret, it was not possible to make a mini-jeep a scale copy of the Jeep: the size of the wheels, the anthropometric parameters of the driver and passengers, the location of the engine and other units on the car - all this forced more and more adjustments to be made to the design. The result was a car made, essentially, “based on” the legendary jeep, which received the (perhaps somewhat strange for such a car) name “Elf-TX”. This is what I want to present to the readers of the “Modelist-Constructor” magazine.
A few words about the technical data of my replicar (this is the name given to cars that copy the external features of vintage cars). "Elf-TX" is a four-seater two-door car. The design is a front-wheel drive vehicle with a frame structure and a front-mounted forced air-cooled engine with a displacement of 350 cc. see The car body is a combined wood-metal one. The front and rear axles of the mini-jeep are almost identical - both are made on the basis of the front axle of the SZD motorized stroller. The front axle of the jeep, however, has been significantly modified so that front-wheel drive can be arranged. How this happened is shown in the drawings of my car.
The machine frame consists of four large units: central, front, rear and a subframe for mounting the engine. The central and front components of the frame are welded from steel pipes with a diameter of 45 mm, the rear - from pipes with a diameter of 25 mm, the subframe - from steel channels 40x60 mm and steel strips 3 mm thick. The central, front and rear frame assemblies have docking units that allow them to be joined together with the front and rear axles into a single unit using bolts and nuts, as shown in the frame drawing. The subframe, welded from steel channels and parts bent from sheet steel, is installed in the front part of the frame on three docking platforms - two of them are located on the front node of the frame, and one on the central one. The subframe is installed using rubber gaskets, which to some extent reduce the effect of engine vibrations on the machine frame.
The rear axle of the jeep is, as already mentioned, a redesigned front axle of the SZD motorized sidecar, which made it possible to make the car with the same type of suspension for the front and rear wheels.
The front axle is driven. In combination with the front engine, this arrangement proved to be extremely successful. There is more intensive engine cooling, more efficient use of vehicle volume, and much more reliable engine control using short and rigid rods instead of cables. And the maneuverability of a car with front-wheel drive is slightly higher than that of cars with driving rear wheels.
The drive from the main gear to the front wheels is carried out using cardan shafts with constant velocity joints, which were designed using crosspieces from the steering shaft of the ZIL-130 car.
The wheels are also from the SZD motorized stroller, and their only difference from the standard ones is the rim widened by 40 mm, which improved the vehicle’s maneuverability.

Homemade SUV from Oka
For regions with difficult roads, it is quite possible to make a swamp vehicle even from a small car. In the process, you can use various available means, ranging from spare parts of a broken car to scraps of pipes and metal sheets.
Universal equipment on a pneumatic base or on wheels with low pressure is in great demand among craftsmen. Creating a jeep based on the Oka is a very profitable solution in terms of finance and practicality.
Volkswagen Golf Syncro
The all-wheel drive installation of this car has its roots in Togliatti. After all, it was these components that were used to create and assemble all-wheel drive VAZs. These cars were called "Victoria". But, unfortunately, they did not go further than prototypes. To assemble an SUV yourself according to this scheme, you will need:
- Angular reducer;
- Rear axle gearbox;
- Viscous coupling;
- 4 axle shafts (VAZ).
This is enough to assemble a fully functional off-road vehicle. A feature of this type of transmission will be the transmission of force to the rear wheels through a viscous coupling. It works as follows. The coupling contains silicone fluid. As the load on the rear wheels increases, it heats up, its viscosity increases, and more torque is transmitted to them. Therefore, despite permanent all-wheel drive, the torque supplied to the wheels will vary depending on conditions.
To attach the rear axle shafts you will have to find a subframe from Golf Syncro. The cardan transmission is assembled from two axle shafts. From the box, torque is transmitted using an angular gearbox; it transmits force to the rear wheels through a viscous coupling. To attach these elements you will have to use a special plate. It should be done by an experienced turner. Perhaps this is the only thing that cannot be done in a simple garage. This plate is secured with bolts. You should also make a suspension for a homemade cardan. You can use the standard one from the classics.
As a result, you will get a great SUV. In terms of driving performance, it is not inferior to many light SUVs. You can safely drive such a car in almost any dirt. If everything is done correctly, then you can safely go even on serious hikes.
Homemade jeeps are real off-road conquerors
Our country has always been distinguished by its ability to create unusual things with our own hands without the presence of professional workshops, expensive machines and other equipment that makes life easier. For foreign designers, it will take years to create projects and test the possibilities of creating an SUV, but we can build a jeep in a few weeks in the garage. Sometimes a homemade SUV is more surprising than the factory options.
Photos of such homemade products have become a hit on automobile websites, and videos are requested more often than test drives of new Japanese production jeeps. There is no such trend towards the development of home-made SUVs in any other state.
Almost a real Hummer from GAZ 66
Based on the photo, it’s hard to say that this is not a real American jeep with an excellent pedigree, a powerful engine and military roots. But in fact, under all the top cosmetics hides the most ordinary and very old GAZ 66 without any serious alterations. If you had seen a video or looked at the car in person, you would have immediately identified the catch, because the sound of an old domestic engine does not suit an American jeep.
This homemade interesting SUV was made in an ordinary garage in the following stages:
• complete disassembly of the GAZ 66 down to the frame structure; • replacing suspensions with more powerful ones, searching for appropriate wheels; • production of body parts made of metal and plastic; • assembly of parts on the frame; • arrangement of the jeep interior; • technical tests.
This is the sequence in which a homemade Hummer was assembled based on a Soviet SUV. This is not the only parody of a jeep from America. But this option is the most successful and famous. Photos of the results of the work of Russian garage engineers are often requested on the Internet.
By the way, the car may well perform the functions of a real passable vehicle. The only thing that prevents its full operation is the lack of registration with the traffic police.
Extended wheelbase for old domestic jeeps
The most common type of homemade product in our country is modified old passable cars. With the help of a few weeks spent in the garage, craftsmen transform a very mediocre old SUV into a completely presentable and interesting piece of equipment.
Such a home-made car may well conquer off-road competitions, become winners of long-term trophy raids and even races in the corresponding class. The most important features of the cars after modifications are as follows:
• functions of a real jeep, thanks to the huge ground clearance; • homemade SUVs of this type are not afraid of any roads or obstacles; • high reliability when using high-quality materials for refurbishment; • use of native or more powerful imported engines.
One of the advantages of such a modification of the car is the absence of the possibility of registering the car with the traffic police. Taking this into account, you can use a non-customs cleared engine from Toyota, for example, and get an excellent all-terrain vehicle, which, however, cannot be driven on the roads. But with such a homemade SUV you can get to the right place through the fields.
Completely homemade vehicles with high cross-country ability
These developments can hardly be called jeeps, at least in appearance they look more like ants. In the CIS countries there are about five different developments of such technology. Three wheel axles allow the home-made vehicle to get out of any trouble. The car also shows the following significant advantages:
• fairly moderate cost of assembly and maintenance; • light weight, low machine power requirements; • light load on the engine and other components.
Also, designers are free to choose the type of suspension, materials and consumables for their car. Of course, you need to have certain engineering knowledge to create such a car from scratch. And there is one big problem with all this - the car will never be registered with the police. Such a car is used on one of the farms in Russia - it is now very easy for the owner to get from one end of the farm to the other.
Let's sum it up
Considering the rather complex possibilities of assembling a car with your own hands, homemade SUVs are a rarity. It’s really not easy to come up with, design and assemble a real jeep that will perform the functions of a passable car and give the owner reliability and quality.
However, many designers in garages create prototypes of real home-made monsters that could go into mass production in factories. All that remains is to establish cooperation between such craftsmen and our machine manufacturers.
Stages of work
Homemade SUVs, the photo of which is presented above, can be made from Oka by following the following sequence:
- Choose the basis for a new vehicle. It could just be a frame from an IZH or Ural motorcycle.
- Make the rear axle and suspension. At this stage, a strut is used, connected by parts of the side members.
- By fixing the strut and steering bushing, a single suspension unit is created.
- You can use tubes from trucks as wheels, which are attached using an adapter hub.
- After installing the frame and suspension, an updated engine, brake system and transmission are installed.
Homemade jeeps (23 photos)
Much has already been said about the village of Pozhva, about its inhabitants and about what kind of all-terrain vehicles they assemble. A huge variety of different options, BUT on the same base. Four low-pressure tires and an engine from an Izh-Planet motorcycle. Many of these all-terrain vehicles do not even admit in real life that they are not an all-terrain vehicle. But there are also many who go to Pozhva for such all-terrain vehicles. They order and buy. They are ordering a lightweight, four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle with reverse gear. Reversing for some buyers is an important part of the order, but basically reversing means getting off and rolling your car back.
By the way, in Pozhva they don’t call their all-terrain vehicles . The name Jeep stuck there. Nobody assembles all-terrain vehicles, everyone assembles “jeeps on tube wheels.” Well... it took root, it took root. And if you also take into account that the word Jeep is used to refer to off-road vehicles, then the Pozhevlyans have hit the nail on the head. Neither a karakat, nor an all-terrain vehicle, nor even a tundra slap is suitable for the name of such a vehicle as a Jeep. Off-road vehicle.
Collecting jeeps is not for fun. Of course, the homemade peasant spirit adds a kind of interest to the process, and accordingly, a lot of strength and energy is added during construction. Having fun while building is a consequence rather than a cause. They build for the farm, they build for fishing trips, they build for sale. But not for pleasure.
Today, prices for Pozhvinsky jeeps vary from 70 to 130 thousand rubles. First of all, spare parts and metal used in construction play a role. Either they were “scraped together” in the garage or they were bought in a store. I mean everything from the metal corners and profiles for building the frame, and everything else. Of course, no one canceled the auction.
Some people build constantly (that’s what they live for), and such all-terrain vehicle builders carry out all their work very carefully. Everything is according to the conductors, everything is in size, even a car multimeter is used to measure engine speed. The all-terrain vehicles turn out to be of high quality and identical - they cannot be distinguished from each other, they are just a small series. They have no problems with sales (however, there are no queues either) and its price is 110 thousand rubles. per copy. Based on the amount, he won’t move either here or there - he doesn’t need to, they’ll buy it anyway. And others, in turn, build in their free time and, upon completion of tests, with an inflated price for bargaining, look for buyers. Tactics, as everywhere else, are elementary. The buyer started to bargain - I’ll move. Not started - only better!
But whatever you say about the monotony of caracal designs, among the standard Pozhvinsky jeeps there are also unique ones, whose authors decided not to follow the path trodden by other people’s foreheads, but to create something new, not like everyone else. Better or worse - always different. The main thing is that it's new! Among such unique things I include a seemingly standard Pozhvinsky jeep , but with a body from a “disabled woman” (below in the photographs).
I hope I didn’t get bored, enjoy watching!
Preparation for work, tools and equipment
First of all, you need to carefully consider when, where and for what purposes the future ATV will be used - hunting and fishing, motorcycling in nature, transporting goods, etc. It is on this basis that you need to make a choice of a “donor” vehicle, deciding how powerful the engine is needed, what kind of suspension is suitable, what kind of trunk, etc.
The suspensions, like the steering system, must be taken from the car. On the front it is necessary to provide space for installing the gearbox.
Installing an all-wheel drive model requires not only special skills of the craftsman, but also additional labor costs. The alternative is to buy a ready-made all-wheel drive unit - it costs money.
Frame
Making the body is far from the simplest stage of the story called “how to assemble an ATV with your own hands.” Suitable materials are fiberglass and fiberglass; it is easier to make a body kit from the second.
First, you need to draw, cut and construct a “blank” of the body from pieces of durable foam plastic, glued or fastened with polyurethane foam. Then apply several layers of fiberglass on it, coating each with epoxy resin and inserting metal fasteners between them to attach the body to the frame. In conclusion, dry the body thoroughly, then prime, sand and paint.
DIY jeeps - successful projects of Russian craftsmen
August 30, 2014
August 30, 2014
To build a real jeep, you don’t need to be the owner of a huge factory with excellent technological and modern machines. At least this is proven by the successes of Russian craftsmen, who can easily make an SUV with their own hands. And such a jeep will easily overcome obstacles that even expensive production models of crossovers and more off-road vehicles cannot do.
A lot of videos have been shot and an incredible number of texts have been written about how to make excellent cross-country equipment with your own hands. All this is freely available on the Internet, and we invite you to take a look at the most incredible creations of Russian craftsmen.
A capable jeep based on Oka
The last car that comes to mind when the terms SUV or crossover are mentioned is the small and full of factory problems Oka. At one time, this car became a bestseller only because of its low cost. Today, car owners who previously purchased this miracle of technology are converting their vehicles into real SUVs exclusively with their own hands.
Often, an attempt to make a crossover out of this car ends in complete fiasco, because the body is not designed for serious loads. But those people who can create a real miracle with their own hands produce good SUVs with the following characteristics:
• completely changed suspension, which allows you to install larger wheels; • tires with high tread and a variety of other ways to increase ground clearance; • all sorts of changes to the body to make the car more like a crossover; • sometimes the engine is replaced, since it is impossible to make a passable jeep on a construction platform.
They also produce with their own hands a variety of winches and other means that make it possible to bring the once helpless Oka closer to the title of a traditional off-road SUV with increased cross-country ability. Interestingly, on the basis of this car, amphibious vehicles that can move on water are often produced.
Caste of homemade jeeps based on GAZ 66 - Russian Hummers
If the Americans believe that only they can assemble an incredibly capable and durable military Hummer H1, then they are very mistaken. In Russia, such cars are assembled in garages by fans of DIY SUVs. There are many videos that show the process of assembling such a vehicle based on the GAZ 66 military truck. This is one of the most successful developments of the GAZ concern in its entire history, so the design of the base of this vehicle is suitable for such purposes.
Of course, the result is impressive, but it is not always possible to create proper reliability. Several similar Hummers have the off-road capability of a compact crossover, but some options have serious advantages:
• excellent maneuverability; • ground clearance of a military truck; • durable engine that cannot be broken; • enormous traction force; • light weight and increased power make the car unstoppable.
Such features, created with your own hands, may surprise a person far from the world of cars. But specialists manage to assemble incredibly technically successful cars in their garage and do it professionally. I wonder why not a single Russian automobile concern can do this given its technical capabilities?
A unique video about a jeep assembled with your own hands
If you're dreaming of a crossover, don't be discouraged by the high prices for cars in this class. You can assemble not only a crossover, but also a real jeep from the materials you have at hand. For example, the heroes of the following video did not particularly alter the design of the latest military GAZ 66, building a wonderful SUV out of it, and did all the work exclusively with their own hands. Of course, the production and assembly process is a proprietary secret.
Let's sum it up
If you want to assemble a car with your own hands and register it with the traffic police, then it is better not to start this process, because you will not be able to legalize the vehicle. SUVs and compact crossovers created by garage craftsmen remain just a means for driving around the fields. This car cannot be driven on public roads.
However, the enthusiasm of the creators of such technology is growing by leaps and bounds. Every month new interesting materials appear with unimaginable alterations and homemade products.

It is common for residents of our country, as well as citizens of the post-Soviet space, to reinvent the wheel. This applies to devices that are expensive to buy, but quite realistic to create with your own hands. Devices that dozens of designers are working on can be created independently. This requires minimal knowledge, desire and imagination. For example, it is quite possible to make a homemade SUV from standard models of domestic cars.
