What is a tent trailer and its features

A tent trailer is a lightweight version of a mobile home for outdoor trips. They take it with them on fishing, hunting, hiking and expeditions. From the outside, the motorhome looks like a huge tent on wheels. During the journey, it folds into a compact trailer.

Inside the tent there is a standard set of living conditions. Under the awning there are sleeping places and a kitchen. Some models have a dry closet, washbasin and shower. There are U-shaped seats at the back of the tent.


A tent trailer is an excellent alternative to motorhomes. A tent assumes a low level of comfort. For long trips with all the amenities, a caravan trailer, that is, a equipped van, is better suited. But this type of trailer is no longer suitable for camping.

Camping using trailed tents is relatively new. Similar devices can be seen in many places equipped for camp holidays.

  • It is worthwhile to provide high-quality strengthening of the front and rear suspension. If you have a spring suspension, then adding a few sheets will be enough. This is done quite easily and quickly. Usually you only need to replace the mounting bolts with longer ones to securely fix the reinforced suspension.
  • Shock absorbers located on a slope. If you make such a system, the shaking when transporting a snowmobile will noticeably decrease. This will minimize possible damage to the snowmobile and keep the trailer intact, driving even on very bad roads and overcoming off-road conditions.

How correct and truly profitable it is to start assembling a trailer for a snowmobile with your own hands is a rather controversial question. But everyone makes their own decision.

Is it worth buying a tent trailer?

There is no clear answer to this question. To make an informed decision, you should carefully familiarize yourself with all the features of a tent on a trailer. A design of this type is suitable for camping enthusiasts who want to improve living conditions in the camp. A car tent is more bulky than a regular tent, but in terms of comfort it is inferior to a full-fledged motorhome.

We also continue to work with the trailer. We “dropped” it down about 10 cm. So that our Kibitka would look beautiful, and not look like something incomprehensible, placed on a regular trailer (as everyone does). Taking into account the fact that the main tractor will be the Discovery3 for the first time, we need to coordinate the height of the trailer drawbar and the tow bar. For this purpose, a “goose” is used

This is a metal adapter, bent from a thick sheet of metal, onto which the trailer itself is installed. This way the drop is parallel to the ground.

but here a second problem emerges. The standard shock absorbers that were on the trailer from the factory are too long. We use ordinary VAZ ammos, which turn out to be almost 2 times longer than we need, after we drop the drop down.

We thought for a long time how to get out of the situation. The idea came to try ammo from a motorcycle. I went to our friends - the guys from the Motohouse motorcycle service

and they gave me 2 ammo from IZHA for testing. They fit perfectly. Today we will buy new ones (on the Zenit market) and integrate

Travel trailer from a French manufacturer. The weight of an empty trailer is 400 kg, when filled it is 650 kg. The package includes six beds, a gas stove, a dining table and a clothes locker. There is a spare wheel, a gas cylinder, and a wrench for supports. The frame is galvanized, the trailer is equipped with a brake mechanism.

How to choose

When choosing a tent, you should focus on the conditions for which it is purchased and the needs of tourists.

To improve the safety of road users, legislation establishes requirements for vehicles, including trailers, or more precisely, their dimensions.

The primary task is to determine the dimensions of the body of the future product at the design stage. The starting point for legal compliance is the dimensions of a boat trailer for a PVC boat (measuring the length, width and height of the narrowest and widest points). The traffic police requirements are as follows:

  • The height of the trailer with the attached boat should not exceed 3.8 m to ensure that rear road users have sufficient visibility for safety.
  • At the edges, the width of the trailer should not be more than 2.2 m - the normal location of the trailer in a regular lane.
  • The vehicle and boat trailer must not have a total length of more than 20 m.

We also note the compliance with the GOST regulations of the chassis, with which it is prohibited to conduct experiments. Hinges and wheels are attached to the trailer axle - it is tested during the registration process. Moped, motorcycle or car wheels are allowed. During the registration process, the PVC boat trailer is subject to maximum loads of 200-250 kg.

Do-it-yourself master class

To make a trailer tent with your own hands, you will need drawings, materials and a main platform. A flatbed trailer or a flatbed trailer can be used as a base. Let's make a trailer from a scooter:
