This is another very elegant, cozy and simple way to bring a piece of nature into your home. Cute lanterns with delightful diffused warm light, casting mysterious shadows on objects around them, like in a summer garden at night, are suitable for decorating any room and for festive table setting throughout the year. You don't even need a lot of time to work, and the result looks better than purchased modern-everyday room design elements.
Tools
: - a short, strong and sharp knife (if desired, you can also cut with scissors), - a ruler, - a board or a special mat for cutting/cutting, - scissors, - an iron and an ironing board or thick fabric and a free, flat surface instead of a board .
Materials
: - waxed or paraffin paper; - flowers, leaves and herbal twigs from the herbarium - flat dried (or you can take confetti for lanterns for the New Year or for a children's room/holiday); — decorative adhesive tape (washi tape, sold on the RuNet).
1. Prepare the main material. You or your child may have had the herbarium since the summer. But you still have time until the New Year to dry the leaves and flowers from a small personal “garden on the windowsill”, a donated bouquet, and ask your neighbors, friends and relatives to collect something similar from your place. You can still find something suitable now even on the street. The key point is that all dried elements used are absolutely(!) dry and absolutely(!) flat. Use the largest book in the house for drying, laying the pages with flowers and leaves on the top and bottom with additional paper (optimally paper towels or napkins; and changing them from time to time, as they will absorb moisture - usually every 2 days), and placing a large weight on top of the book.
2. Carefully lay out the wax paper on the table: do not crumple it (neither now nor during further work, so clear the surrounding area in advance), otherwise a clear white mark will form at the fold, which cannot be removed later.
Lanterns look best in proportions in the form of a cube, one face of which is 11-12 cm. Each of the 4 vertical “walls” of the lampshade will be 2 layers of wax paper with flowers/leaves from the herbarium “sealed” between them. Therefore, from wax paper we cut 4 sheets of 12 cm in height and 24 cm, respectively, in width.
3. We fold each of the cut sheets no less carefully and very, very evenly in half to get two-layer flat squares.
4. After this, we transfer the first folded waxed sheet onto the ironing board, open it and, according to personal taste and idea, put the dried elements inside, distributing them beautifully, and then close the sheet. Imagine that you are creating a picture: some flowers will go at an angle, others straight, some of them from below, others will “hang” from above or look out from the sides, you can even achieve a feeling of movement (for example, petals “flying” from a flower) to make your lanterns in the dark even more like a night garden.
Don’t be afraid to carefully tear off excess parts from dried flowers. And don't worry if parts of the flowers go beyond the edges of the wax paper: after ironing, you will trim off the excess. By the way, the most interesting will be the lanterns, each wall of which is completely different from the other 3. An interesting combination is obtained if the number of colors in each (or only some) of the walls of each lamp-candlestick is equal to the number of ready-made lanterns that you put in a group: a kind of harmony.
5. Preheat the iron to high temperature in advance. Next, in two graceful and fast - literally fleeting - movements from the center of the square of wax paper with dried flowers inside, without pressing with the iron, iron it up and down. The wax in the paper melts, soldering the sheets and fixing the plants inside. That's it, all that remains is to let the sheets cool and carefully trim off the parts of the flowers protruding beyond the border!
In the photo below you can see air stains in the ironed squares - this is normal!
6. And then all you have to do is fold 2 squares evenly, side to side, and evenly stick decorative adhesive tape to the junction. We take it because it is narrow, but you can always replace it with a completely transparent one, but also narrow! To make the lanterns look better, choose not a variegated decorative ribbon, but, for example, silver or gold.
Glue the squares from the front side, turn them over to the other side, and wrap and glue the ends of the tape on top and bottom over the edge to the wrong side. There is no need to completely seal the joints from the inside out, since decorative tape can withstand the heat from a candle less well than wax paper.
7. Glued - bend the adhesive tape at the junction of the squares so that the flashlight turns out to be square, not round (which, by the way, is also a good option).
8. Continue applying a new square to the next side and glue them together with adhesive tape. The easiest way to deal with the last joint is as follows: lay the glued strip of squares face down, and then simply fold the right and left squares towards each other. Get a plane that needs to be glued at the joint using the same method.
9. Go through the folds again, open your craft - and the flashlight is ready! All that's left to do is put a candle inside!
We make lanterns with confetti in exactly the same way, only we scatter thin confetti between the sheets - and they don’t even need to be aligned in one layer.
IMPORTANT!
Don't leave these lanterns unattended: even though they're wax paper, they're still paper! Remember that the paper will heat up from the candles, so blow out the candles inside without touching the lanterns. If you place such lanterns on the street or on a table with a busy group of people, it is worth attaching weights to them in the corners so that the lampshades-candlesticks do not accidentally blow away or be swept away by hand.
DIY lantern from a jar for the New Year
We will need:
- jar; - a good wide brush; - regular PVA glue; - beautiful napkins; - a candle-tablet and as decorations it can be ribbons, sparkles, acrylic paints, adhesive sparkles.
We will look at the simplest option for making a flashlight - simply using napkins and ribbons. The jar must be washed well and wiped dry. After that, we take the ones prepared with any beautiful designs. I chose a New Year's theme - deer and Santa Claus.
Carefully cut out the piece of napkin we need to the size, apply it to the jar and start applying glue on top of the napkin with a brush. The glue must be applied in a thin layer and very carefully so that the napkin does not tear.
When we have covered the entire jar in this way, we set it for 30-40 minutes so that the glue dries.
Next, we need to decorate the top. To do this, we take our prepared golden ropes, wrap the jar and, in the same way, carefully coat the ropes with glue with a brush and let them dry. When our flashlight is completely ready, we simply put a tablet candle in it and light it. When several of these lanterns illuminate a room, it turns out very festive and beautiful.
I have shown you the most accessible and simplest way to make a New Year's lantern, but you can experiment with glitter and paints, you can wrap the top of the jar with a longer ribbon and leave part of the tape unglued, then the lantern can be hung. You can make lanterns of different colors and sizes and in the evening, when it is dark outside, light them and enjoy the beauty and anticipation of the New Year.
You can decorate a country area for a romantic picnic or celebration using the simplest items. Here we are talking about making street lamps with candles from empty glass jars. You just need to decorate the jars and make wire pendants.
Color, size and shape to suit your taste, any will do. Everything is quite simple to do with your own hands, having prepared some necessary materials.
To make a lamp you will need:
Glass tanks with threaded neck. A can of spray paint in the color you want. Pieces of lace. Twine or jute mesh. Steel or copper wire. Wire cutters. All-purpose glue or glue gun. Candles and sand for installation.
Lamps made from cans can be any color, or even just transparent. It’s better to make several lanterns of different colors at once, it will look more interesting in the evening. We paint the inside of the jars, spray paint or just a brush. Just choose preferably translucent paints, such as water-based ones.
We screw a wire loop onto the neck. The lamps will be hung on this loop outside. Cut a piece of lace ribbon to length so that you can wrap the jar with a slight overlap. The lace must be well glued to the jar; this can be done using a glue gun, silicone, or other transparent moisture-resistant glue. Handles for flashlights are possible.
Another option for a homemade decorative candlestick, for indoor use, can also be made. But the design and manufacturing method are completely different.
Another decorative element is a jute mesh glued on top of the lace.
This basically completes the production of the street lamp. The length of the candle should not be higher than the edge of the jar. For fixation and fire safety, pour sand to the bottom of the jar to 1/3 of the height and stick a candle in the center.
Photo from makelifelovely.com You can cast homemade candles by melting the remains of used paraffin candles. The mold can be easily made from a toilet paper tube; you just need to seal the bottom well with tape and prepare a wick from a cotton thread.

You can make a lighting fixture for your home or garden from anything. Yes, even from the same glass jars. The trend of recycling has become very popular in the world, so it is not surprising that today you can find a lot of master classes on making lamps from glass jars.
This article will help you not only choose the type of lamp, but also make it correctly from scrap materials with your own hands.
Making a lampshade from an ordinary glass jar
Let's consider making a lampshade from a jar using an electric light bulb. For lampshades with electric lamps, glass jars with a screw-on metal lid are suitable. The jars can be of different sizes, as long as they fit the lamp. For lamps without electricity, simpler jars without threads are also suitable.
During the work we will need:
- a glass jar with a thread and a matching iron lid,
- electric lamp,
- socket with electric wire,
- jute or cotton rope,
- transparent glue that can stick the rope to the glass.
You can choose a jar of a non-standard shape, which will give the product an original look and decorate any interior.
Important! It is better not to use an incandescent lamp. You need to choose light bulbs with minimal heating. You can use modern energy-efficient lamps. They heat up less and shine brightly. You can replace them with fluorescent or halogen ones. LED lamps are also suitable.
Tools you will need:
- to cut a hole in the lid - a drill with drills;
- pencil;
- knife.
Stages of making a lampshade:
We mark on the cover the future hole for the lamp socket. Place the jar lid on a table or other flat place. We place a screw-on plug from the cartridge on its reverse side and carefully draw a pencil along the circumference of the inner hole of the plug. The diameter of the resulting circle will be equal to the diameter of the cartridge.
In the tin lid we drill holes along the circle line, the more often the better.
- Squeeze out the center from the outside to the inside. If necessary, make cuts with a knife.
- We insert the cartridge into the hole in the cover and secure it with a plug.
- Apply glue evenly to the jar and glue a rope to it, winding it in a spiral from the top of the jar. Carefully cut the ends of the rope at an oblique angle.
- We insert the lamp into the socket and screw the lid with the socket onto the jar.
The simplest lamp with a homemade lampshade is ready.
You can try to make a different pattern from the rope, use rope of two colors. The rope winding must be tight enough to allow the light from the lamp to diffuse.
Since we have a simple lampshade, we can use the frame of an old chandelier to create an updated composition with an original design solution.
Where it will come in handy
Many people mistakenly believe that a lamp made from cans is only suitable for a country house. But this is a misconception, since if executed correctly, such a lighting device will look beautiful in any interior of an apartment or private house. Note! Lamps made from glass jars can be styled in any style known today. As decoration you can use:
- hand painted;
- multi-colored pieces of glass;
- various ropes and appliqués;
- colored paper;
- drawings.
Decor option
Using such a simple material as glass and products made from it, you will get unusual Moroccan night lights and other lighting options. At the same time, by making them yourself, you will save significantly,
without buying ready-made models in stores.
Where it all started
I wanted to arrange a romantic evening for my husband, bought some scented candles, but only then discovered that there was nowhere to put them. I had to be smart. After surfing various forums, I came across an interesting post about how a woman made lanterns from old tin cans. Judging by the photo, the homemade product turned out to be very attractive, so I decided to repeat it.
I also didn’t want to waste money on expensive flashlights. And making something with your own hands is a good way to exercise your imagination.
What you might need
To make a lighting device with your own hands, you will need the following materials:
- glass jars;
- candle, portable flashlight or parts of an old lamp (socket and base);
- dye;
- wire;
- transparent silicone glue;
- decorative materials (ribbons, ropes, appliqués, etc.).
Note! When choosing decorative elements, remember that they must be combined with the interior of the room in which the homemade lamp will be placed.
The list of necessary tools includes a drill with a set of drills for working with glass, scissors, and brushes of different sizes.
Types of New Year's decorative lanterns
Any available material is used in the work. Simple crafts for the New Year are made from colored paper. Small lanterns are used to decorate the Christmas tree. Glass jars and plastic bottles are suitable for crafts for the New Year - this is an option for tabletop decor. They make large and small laces.
More complex crafts for the New Year are made with your own hands from wood, cardboard, and ceiling tiles. The size can be different, even floor-standing. For the New Year, the craft is decorated with festive symbols:
- artificial needles;
- Christmas balls;
- cones;
- sparkles;
- beads.
For illumination, use LED lights, garlands, candles, or create New Year's paraphernalia without lighting
What you can get
A lamp made from a can can have a wide variety of designs and appearance. The following product options can be made from this material:
- candlesticks;
- tabletop instruments;
- shades for chandeliers.
Let's look at each option in more detail.
Note! The methods for making lighting fixtures described below are applicable to all glass products.
Option No. 1. Candlesticks The simplest and easiest to make will be making candlesticks. Here you can use both darkened and transparent small jars. If necessary, you can repaint them with your own hands in the desired color. To make a candlestick, you need to do the following manipulations:
- apply a design to a glass product. To give it volume, simply blend the paint;
- then pour paint inside the jar and also blend it;
- The neck can be additionally wrapped with strong rope and thus form the basis for attaching the candlestick to the wall or ceiling. Instead of rope, you can use wire to install the candlestick;
- Add some sand and water to the bottom. This will protect the glass from heating and cracking;
- Place a lit candle inside.
Ready candlestick
Option No. 2. Tabletop device Here, larger cans (1, 2 and 3 liters) should be used for production. To make such a lamp, you will additionally need glass balls and pieces of glass of different colors. Everything is done with your own hands as follows:
- wash and dry the jar;
- We are deciding on the method of external decoration with glass. You can paste them over the entire glass surface in a chaotic order, or you can lay out a specific pattern (ornament);
- Next, we coat the outer surface with glue and begin laying out the pieces of glass. Try not to make the joints between the pieces of glass large. They should be almost invisible;
Note! Use fast-setting glue so you don't have to wait too long for the glass to attach to the surface of the jar.
Decoration
- we wait for all the pieces of glass to stick properly;
- take a beautiful ribbon and tie it around the neck. This will give the product a festive look;
- pour sand and water inside the jar and place lighted candles on top. It is better to use small and flat candles. They can be replaced with a small portable flashlight.
Ready product
Such a device is suitable for illuminating a picnic in the evening near the house or just gatherings in a gazebo. In addition, it will fit perfectly into the romantic atmosphere of a dinner at home.

Complex option
The most difficult thing to do will be to form a chandelier from glass jars. The difficulty here is that it will be necessary to drill holes in the bottom of the glass product to insert a socket with a light bulb. Let's look at an example of manufacturing without drilling, which will greatly simplify our task. Such a lighting fixture will be an excellent addition to a country kitchen, living room and other rooms decorated in Provence and Country styles.
The lamp can be made according to the following scheme:
- We measure the wire to the length we need. The loops will take approximately 7-10 cm;
- make two small loops of 1-1.5 cm;
- We attach the wire to the neck. The first lampshade is ready.
We repeat a similar procedure for all other lampshades. After this, we decorate the resulting lampshades using paint, various applications and other decorative materials.
Finished chandelier
Inside such lampshades you can place a light bulb on a wire. If you need to drill holes for a light bulb, we make it in the lid (it’s easier this way). Here you can cut a hole with ordinary scissors. We thread the base with the light bulb into the hole we made and secure it with wire or rope. Carefully decorate the place of fixation. Using these simple instructions, you can make a lamp of any type, shape and size from a glass jar. Be original in decorating and you will get a unique and unique lighting fixture in your home.

Master class on a glass jar candle holder
You'll need:
- Pieces of wax.
- Saucepan.
- Wooden stick.
- Aroma oils.
- Dyes.
- Wick.
- Glass jar.
Step 1
To pour wax into a glass container, you must first prepare it. To do this, take a piece of material and cut it into small cubes. Place the crushed wax in a saucepan.
Melt the wax in a water bath
Step 2
Turn on the stove and place a saucepan of water on the burner, and place a container of wax on top. Make a water bath. Stir the wax with a wooden stick. Until it completely melts.
- Then turn off the stove and, without removing the saucepan with wax, add the necessary additives: aromatic oils, dyes, etc.
- Mix everything thoroughly with a wooden stick. The wax is ready.
Remember that it can harden very quickly. Therefore, immediately make a candle out of it.
Pour the wax into the jar, carefully holding the wick
Step 3
- Take a jar and attach the wick inside it. To do this, drop wax on one end of the cord or use a special tablet clamp and lower it to the bottom of the container using a straw (see photo).
- Secure the other end of the wick so that it does not fall inward. To do this, wrap it around a wooden skewer or make a special clamp.
Slowly, so that the wick does not move or fall, pour the liquid wax into the glass container.
Step 4
When the wax on top has hardened, you can remove the wick mount. If there is a hole in the candle, pour the remaining wax into it.
If you want a striped candle, pour in the wax, alternating colors and letting each row dry.

Master class on a candle holder made from a glass jar with a window
To do this you will need:
- glass jars;
- painting livestock;
- acrylic paint or spray paint
- twine, ribbon.
- candle.
Step 1
Take a glass jar and stick a piece of masking tape on its wall. If the stripes are thin, then make several rows overlapping each other.
Step 2
Glue adhesive tape or masking tape in the shape of a heart
Cut out a silhouette from the pasted tape. In our example, this is a heart. Remove excess tape from the jar, leaving only the silhouette of the figure on the wall.
Step 3
Paint with acrylic paint using an aerosol can
Cover the jar with paint. It is most convenient to use a spray can. To do this, roll several newspapers into a tube and put a jar on them. Cover the entire surface of the glass container evenly with paint. If necessary, make another layer. Instead of a spray can, you can use acrylic paint. But it takes longer to dry.
Step 4
When the paint is dry, use something to hook the masking tape and remove it. Decorate the neck of the jar with twine or ribbon. Place a tablet candle inside. The original glass jar candlestick is ready.
Candlesticks made from small glass jars. Many people think that the best candlesticks are made from tall or wide jars. After all, they can accommodate a lot of decor and, thanks to their size, there is a large field for creativity. But in fact, you can make a very beautiful candle holder from a baby food jar. Sometimes just a couple of touches are enough and a wonderful decor is ready.

Colored candle
To make your own candle, you will need wax, a glass vessel, and a wick. Having looked at the photo of a candlestick made from jars, made by yourself, you can borrow interesting ideas. This original product will help create a warm atmosphere in your home.
The wax must be cut and then melted in a water bath. The end of the wick should be lowered to the bottom of the container. A small weight is tied to it so that it does not float up. A dye of the desired shade and flavor are added to the wax.
You can make a candle from several colored layers. Then the wax needs to be divided into even parts, and a certain dye must be added to each of them.
The first layer is allowed to harden so that the paints do not mix. Then pour in the next portion. The procedure is repeated until the desired result is obtained.

Making a lampshade from a tin can
A simple option, its implementation will take no more than an hour. We take an ordinary tin can, for example, from canned peas or corn. In addition to this, you will need:
- towel or piece of cloth;
- hammer;
- nails;
- adhesive tape;
- paper;
- markers;
- candle.
Fill the jar completely with water and put it in the freezer. The water should freeze in the container, which will avoid deformation of the can during further work with it.
While ice is forming in the jar, we make a template with a pattern. We use soft paper, cut it in length and width according to the dimensions of the circumference and height of the can, respectively.
We put the drawing on paper. We take into account that on the bank it will be in the form of small holes, which we will make in the bank according to the pattern of the drawing. We apply a drawing or ornament on paper with a pencil or marker.
We take out a jar of ice from the refrigerator and wrap it in paper with a pattern. We secure the paper with tape so that it cannot move. Place the container on a towel or rag, and carefully punch holes in the jar with nails or use a drill using different drills.
After we finish punching the pattern on the walls, place the container in warm water and allow the ice to completely melt.
After that, we bring beauty to the jar. You can use markers to draw a design on the walls, or you can paint the outside of the jar with acrylic paint of a suitable color.
We are waiting for the jar to dry completely. Place a candle at the bottom and light it. In the dark, the lampshade will glow beautifully and create a romantic illusion of a starry sky.
The tin can lampshade is ready! To prevent the thin walls of the container and the bottom from overheating, place a porcelain or metal circle under the candle for protection.
Holes on the thin walls of a tin can can also be made with an awl. The finished “shade” can be attached to a light bulb socket. Several of these lampshades will make a nice and original chandelier made from tin cans.
Lesson #5: Flashlight “Drop”
This is another type of flashlight assembled from the same parts, but in this case you will need a template.
As in the previous case, you need to cut, fold and glue a number of parts in a circle. The ones in the photo consist of 16 “drops”.
As a component of such decoration, you can use almost any figure, including openwork. Other options for New Year's lanterns of this type:
Master class No. 10 “Amazing flashlight”
Cut out a lot of these blank shapes from paper.
Their number should vary from ten to fifty at your discretion. The main thing is that they are all the same and neatly cut. Each cut piece should be folded in half. Let's start gluing the flashlight. To do this, all the blanks are first carefully glued at points 1. Pay attention to the fact that the same side is glued together if the paper has only one side that is colored. Then the blanks are glued on the other side at points 2. Then we connect the edges of the ovals to each other, stitching them with a needle or gluing them with double-sided tape. At the end of the work, you need to glue the two extreme edges. The flashlight is ready!
