Crochet from jute: what can be done
Jute is the name given to the material obtained from the leaves of the southern plant of the same name. The thread resembles a rope made from hemp, not only in color, but also in its light hairiness. Natural undyed jute has a yellowish-beige color, but the threads can also be purchased in dyed form.
The color of dyed jute can be any.
The thickness of the jute thread also varies depending on the number of fibers twisted together. You can crochet wonderful exclusive products from jute, and depending on the functional purpose of the item, choose the thickness of the thread.
Crochet from jute:
- Panama hats, hats, visors;
- bags, backpacks;
- rugs;
- baskets;
- panel;
- cases for flowerpots, flower pots;
- napkins;
- dishes - vases, plates, bread bins, etc.;
- boxes;
- bookmarks;
- belts, etc.
The threads are even, so crocheted items turn out gorgeous.
Jute for crochet: advantages and disadvantages
The advantages of jute are:
- natural material;
- lasting;
- does not stretch;
- not electrified;
- does not deteriorate from moisture;
- it is easy to care for;
- excellent air permeability;
- has an unlimited service life, etc.
The disadvantages include the fact that the thread has fibers that can break off and crumble. But you should know that this only happens during knitting; nothing like this happens during operation.
To get rid of lint, you can shake the product and knock it out (like a carpet).
The thread is somewhat rough to the touch, which does not allow you to crochet clothes from it.
You can knit any patterns using a jute hook. Spatial products of complex shape (hats, baskets, etc.) can be made using a plastic frame and tying it.
Both products made from raffia and knitted yarn, and crochet items made from jute look great - they are fashionable and stylish.
Caring for crocheted jute items
Such products should be washed in warm water using any detergent, but it is advisable to use gels. Just don’t twist, bend or rub things too hard.
Washing is acceptable both by hand and by machine. Do not load bulky items into the washing machine - they may become damaged and lose their shape.
To remove dirt, you can do without washing: just heat the product with hot steam and lightly wipe with a damp cloth. Flat knitted items can be ironed.

Head
To make the head we will need a hollow ball with a diameter of about 6 cm.
If you don’t have one at hand, you can make it yourself from scrap materials.
For example, soak paper in PVA glue and roll the resulting mixture into a ball of the desired size. The paper you choose should be soft and not very thick, such as toilet paper or napkins.
For the head, you can use foam balls or an old Christmas tree decoration.
I didn’t have either of those at that moment, so I had to get out with the help of crafts made from toilet paper)))
After the ball has dried, wrap it with twine of a natural color.
And glue the abdomen to the cone. Everything is simple here.

How to weave bast bast shoes correctly - useful tips and algorithm of actions
Several centuries ago it was difficult to find a village family that did not have a pair of bast shoes for each resident at home. But in the progressive 21st century, lightweight, comfortable products, which, as the elders said, “made the leg happy,” have lost their functionality.
Today, bast shoes are just a museum exhibit, but sometimes there are situations when a modern city dweller wants to recreate historical shoes, for example, to give elderly relatives an original present or to prepare a costume for a children’s party.
Whatever the reasons that prompted you to figure out how to weave bast shoes, everyone can master the technique of creating these shoes. Despite the apparent simplicity of the process, there are subtleties and secrets here, so you should strictly follow the instructions and be extremely careful.
Preparation of materials and tools
Before weaving bast shoes, you need to decide on the material. It should be chosen depending on the purpose of the product. In the old days, bast shoes were woven from bast, birch bark and straw. Durable products are made from linden and hemp rope, but willow ropes are destroyed after only 5-10 wears.
Any strip of bark is called bast, but it is most convenient to work with linden. Raw materials are harvested in the spring from young trees. The preparation of the bark proceeds as follows:
- The trunk is cut low.
- The bark is ripped open, after which the core is pulled out.
- The material is rolled into a ring.
- Strips are cut into 10 mm wide strips.
- The raw materials are dried in a well-ventilated place without direct sunlight.
Before you start weaving bast shoes, you need to soak the material in water for a day, steam it and completely clean the strips of bark residues.
Other materials for weaving bast shoes - newspaper tubes, twine, burlap - are also suitable for making decorative items.
Before starting work, you need to prepare the tools for weaving bast shoes. You will need a knife, a picker, a grinder, and a block for the future product. It can be made from foam or wood.
As a model, you should use smooth shoes without locks and additional decorative elements.
Block
Master class on weaving
Almost all lessons on weaving bast shoes contain algorithms for building up an additional layer of material. To increase strength, double weave is used - raw materials can be added to certain areas or over the entire surface of the foot.
As a standard, 6 basts are required to make one product. More material is needed if you need to strengthen the heel and toe, or if bast shoes are woven from seven stripes.
The length of one strip must be at least two meters. Smooth, tall trees are selected for harvesting.
You can start weaving from the toe or heel, as is convenient - in both cases, after bringing the line of the braid to a bend, the method of work changes.
In order to make the second layer, when the basts intertwine and reach the edges at the ends, you need to bend them and continue working. If the strip is not long enough, it is supplemented. Glue is used for connection. In this simple way you can make excellent bast shoes for a child for a matinee or other event.
To give the product a festive look, a wool braid is woven into the upper part of the sock. The technique is no different from the standard one - even a beginner can decorate bast shoes with his own hands.
Bast bast shoes
Weaving bast shoes
Weaving bast bast shoes with your own hands is a simple process. You will need 6 strips of material for each slipper. Work algorithm:
- Take 2 basts in your right and left hands, intertwine them in the middle, bend the upper ends down - you get 4 ends for each hand.
- Weave a braid of 12 strips. Alternately take one bast from the right, the second from the left, connect with those that lie in the direction of weaving. If everything works out correctly, the left stripe always goes at the beginning, and the right one at the end. The strips must be laid tightly, without gaps. When the canvas reaches the desired length (5 mm longer than the pad), the insole will be ready.
Insole
The production of bast bast shoes continues by weaving the sock. The insole fits under the block - there are 4 lugs on both sides. You will need to tie the middle of the heel to a thread and secure it to the block.
Sock
Until this point, weaving was carried out from the edges to the center. To make a sock, you will need to reverse the direction:
- Take 2 medium basts, right and left, intertwine. Place the remaining strips in a line and work according to the layout. After weaving all the basts, they will need to be tightened.
- To weave the heel, take all the strips of material and gather them together. Separate the upper basts, one at a time on the left and right. Weave the second layer through them in the opposite direction using a kochedyka. Weave the remaining basts together.
- Unfold the top strip at a right angle and connect it to the rest of the insole. Cover the other bast. It is intertwined with the others who have gone to the opposite side. A second layer is formed on the sole due to the bast, which is twisted opposite the first pattern.
The remaining parts will come out on their own at the end of the weaving. If there is not enough length, you will need to increase it, and then bring it out and bend the ends in different directions so that one line comes out.

Jute cosmetic bag with openwork valve
I knitted a basket from jute and used an openwork motif on the flap.

Rectangular basket knitted from jute
For a long time I had an idea to knit a basket from twine. I bought jute twine (three-strand), took a 3.5 hook and started knitting.
Hind legs
We make the paws separately. We drop glue onto a sheet of file and spread it into a circle with a diameter of 2 - 2.5 cm, and then glue a jute thread around it.
We glue the resulting circle from the file and, until the glue has dried, we give the part a small convex shape. Glue black thread along the edge. It will look like this.
Next, we glue the parts to the cone and form the legs using three small circles.
The next stage is tailcoat modeling. We glue the black thread onto the cone in any shape, while creating the outline of the clothing. This is the view from the front, side and back.
Gradually, row by row, we fill the outlined space with black thread.
The finished tailcoat will look like this.

Making the body
The first thing we start with is to roll a square sheet of whatman paper into a cone 25 - 30 cm high. The diameter of the upper base is about 2 cm, and the bottom 10 - 12 cm.
You can choose different sizes for your cat. Instead of whatman paper, you can choose another type of paper. The denser it is, the stronger the base frame will be. By the way, the cone can be replaced with a bottle.
Then we coat the cone with glue and begin to wrap it with twine of a natural color.
At the bottom of the cone we make two strips of black jute.
The base is actually ready. Let's move on to the details.
