Good afternoon, dear visitors of the Island of Good Hope!
Today we are reopening our sewing workshop, which means another detailed master class awaits you, in which I will show you how I sewed the Dunno costume with my own hands.

This is not the first carnival costume that I had to sew for my boys. I sewed both a wolf costume and a snowman costume. But this is the first time I’ve posted a detailed master class and pattern. I hope this makes things easier for a lot of moms.

Of course, I had to sew this suit for a reason. The fact is that on May 25, the day of the last bell, first-graders at our music school congratulated the graduates, and my first-grader played the role of Dunno.

So I had to “rack my brains” on how to make a Dunno costume. We looked at books, of course, scoured the Internet, there were ready-made costumes, but no one told in detail, much less showed, how he did it.

Sewing a bright orange shirt, green tie and yellow pants was no problem for me. Moreover, our wardrobe already had a ready-made shirt of the appropriate color (I sewed it last year), we didn’t need pants, and sewing a tie was a matter of minutes. The problem was how to make Dunno's hat.

For a long time I did not dare to use ordinary Whatman paper as a frame, as other mothers advised, with it, it seemed to me, the hat would not be very durable. But time was running out and nothing else came to hand, so I finally settled on whatman paper and, to be honest, I didn’t regret it. The hat holds its shape perfectly. Naturally, it won’t be possible to wash such a hat, well, let’s learn to treat things more carefully.

So, here is a scaled-down drawing of a hat and tie pattern. To enlarge the picture, click on it with the left mouse button.

To make panties, you can use the pattern of panties, which I always use to sew shorts for my boys. I will post the shirt pattern very soon.

We build a hat pattern on a large Whatman paper.

Glue the top part of the hat into a cone. The circumference of the base of this cone should coincide with the length of the inner circumference of the crown of the hat.

But it's okay if they are a little different. The main thing is that after cutting out a smaller circle, try the crown on the child’s head and make sure that the hat stays stable on the head: it doesn’t fall too low, but it doesn’t fall off either.

We cut out the same details from fabric, only in two copies and with seam allowances (I used blue satin). We do not cut off the top of the cone!!!

We sew the outer circle on a machine, notch it close to the line.

Cut out the inner circle.

Turn it inside out and sew the outer edge with bias stitches.

The process is not quick, but don’t be lazy, be sure to do it, then the edge will turn out neat. Iron, remove bias stitches and carefully insert the paper piece. Machine sew the inner circle.

Now let's move on to the top part. We sew two cones: inner and outer.

We insert the inner cone into the paper frame, pulling out the tip at the top.

Cover with the top one and fasten both ends with hand stitches. Then we will remove them and sew the top of our hat in this place.

We connect both parts at the bottom using hand stitches and iron them inward.

Now we need to connect both parts of our hat. I did this by hand with hidden stitches, and so on all the way around.

On the inside we got this raw edge, which we simply trimmed with bias tape.

First, we sew it on with temporary stitches by hand, and then carefully, also by hand, with threads that match the color of the hat (unfortunately, we can’t do it with a machine).

Our hat is almost ready, all that remains is to sew on the top. From the same blue satin, I cut strips about 15 cm long and 1-1.5 cm wide. I connected them all in the middle, and sewed this bomb to the top of the cone.

This is the hat we got.

Yes, I almost forgot, the brim of a hat can be easily given the desired shape. For example, I curled the brim up at the front.

With a tie everything is easier and faster.

We cut out 2 parts according to the pattern. We glue one of them with serpyanka or non-woven fabric.

We connect the parts with the right sides inward, stitch along all the lines except the top one, cut off the corners and turn them inside out through the top cut. We sew with oblique stitches, iron, remove the stitches. We bend the upper part of the tie and insert an elastic band there, the length of which can be adjusted on the child.

All you have to do is sew a shirt and pants. And your DIY Dunno costume is ready.

How to make dolls for your fairy tales

As you know, I launched a new fairy tale project “In the footsteps of Dunno and his friends.” We have chips for playing different games with fairy-tale characters, but I thought that we need to revive one short one - Dunno, that is, make a rag doll with our own hands. I looked through a lot of ideas, chose one option, below you see photos of what I came up with. I also decided to post other finds for you, because you can always make dolls and act out any fairy tale.

This is my second experience making rag dolls. The first one is the Maslenitsa doll, where you can download step-by-step instructions.

How our Dunno was born.

First, I created the base from threads according to this pattern.

And then she began to “dress” her in rag clothes.

1. I cut out two round pieces from flesh-colored material and sewed them in a circle, leaving a small section unprotected.

2. I placed the resulting head on a piece of thread and, turning the ends of the fabric inward, sewed up the hole with hidden stitches.

3. I sewed on the hair from orange yarn, Dunno is a character with bright hair, and embroidered the eyes.

4. I cut out a shirt, pants, and a strip for a scarf-tie.

I noticed the hair and clothes from this picture. Here it is sewn from felt, which is easier to work with; I used pieces of different materials.

For Dunno's hat, she cut out two circles from cardboard, and also made holes inside for the head, cut out a cap from blue material and cut off threads for a tassel at the ends of the cap. I sewed threads to the edge of the cap, then sewed the side seam of the cap, turned it inside out, and inserted it into the holes in one of the circles. I glued the material with PVA glue, then glued another circle underneath. She put the hat on the doll's head and sewed it to the head.

And now Dunno is ready, soon his daughter will come from kindergarten and appreciate the doll.

Here are a few more ideas on how you can revive characters from a fairy tale or invent them, and then create a fairy tale story about them.

Preparation method:

Hair. We use wool threads to make pompoms. They are instantly glued with glue to the inside of the spoon. Thread colors can be completely different.

Cloth. It’s better, of course, to sew a dress - a felt cone, then you won’t have to hem it. But you can also use other fabrics, preferably dense, to keep their shape. We sew the cone together and make a cut in the upper part, just below the corner. We insert a spoon into the cut and tie it tightly with a ribbon, maybe with a bow.

Eyes. You can draw eyes on a spoon, stick on ready-made running eyes, or make an applique. Source

In order to recreate a beautiful and interesting appearance, you should use any bright clothes and complement the appearance of your know-nothing with a variety of elements.

To make a Know-Nothing shirt, you need to draw up a pattern on paper for your hero. It can be transferred to fabric using portable elements such as tailor's chalk. The pattern is given in an imprecise form, therefore, you should make indents along the edges of one centimeter for subsequent processing. Then, you need to cut out the details of the shirt and make the necessary cuts for the middle back seams. Next you need to stitch the left and right sides of the back, leaving a slit for the fastener. Next, you need to iron the seam. Next, you need to sew the seams for the shoulders. Then, sew the main parts of the jacket with sleeves and overcast the seams for stitching. Sew the side seams using the jacket and the bottom seams of the sleeves, preferably doing this at the same time. Then, you need to overcast these elements. Next, you must adjust the bottoms of the jacket and sleeves. Next, you need to sew your button onto the cut of the fastener.

Thus, the main costume of the hero will be ready. The costume can also be supplemented with various elements and make the hero’s appearance more mischievous and varied.

Complete the suit with a variety of things. You can cut pieces of fabric from a shirt and replace them with other pieces of fabric, sewing careless claps in place of empty holes.

As a result, you will get a very interesting and beautiful Dunno costume, which can be used for traditional holidays of Russian fairy tales, use these costumes for school holidays or matinees.

How to make a hat?

It's easier to make a hat out of cardboard, but it won't last long. Materials and tools for making the Dunno headdress:

• stationery knife or regular scissors;
• superglue, it can be replaced with double-sided tape;
• cardboard to match the color of the hat or whatman paper that can be painted.

First, the preparation is done. A large circle is made on a piece of cardboard for the base of the hat and brim. The size of the base should match the circumference of the child’s head. About 20 cm should be allocated to the margins. They may be larger in size. The main thing is that the child feels comfortable performing active actions in such a headdress.

The second blank is a cone. It is necessary to provide a place for connecting the parts. Then the cone is glued to the fields. You can complement the hat with strands of hair cut out of yellow cardboard, which are glued to the bottom of the brim. The fabric model is made in the same way. Making a shirt

The easiest way is to use a ready-made shirt - look in stores for a bright yellow, red, or orange model.

Making a shirt with your own hands is more difficult. First you need to take measurements and make a pattern. If you make a mistake at this stage, then further work will be irrevocably damaged. This requires some modeling skills. An example of a shirt and trousers pattern for a 4-5 year old boy:

To complete the look, it is recommended to use large, bright buttons.

Important! When creating a pattern, you need to take care of seam gaps. It is enough to add 1.5-2 cm to the measurements

If it is difficult to make a standard shirt yourself, you can try to sew a Russian folk model.

DIY trousers

Suit trousers can also be bought over the counter - green, yellow, orange. It is advisable that the shirt be of a different color - this way the image will be closer to the original.

If you want to sew them yourself, you will need thick, bright fabric, thread, a sewing machine and a little time. A pattern drawing for trousers with straps for a little boy can be found just above. Pants can be made with elastic. Don't forget about seam allowances.

What to wear on your feet?

There is no need to make special shoes. Nosov's character wore ordinary brown boots. The child can wear any shoes that are in the wardrobe. Their color doesn't matter. You are also allowed to wear sandals with socks or leg warmers underneath. The child may even be wearing sneakers or sneakers. The image of Dunno will not suffer from this.

Dunno shirt: how to sew, pattern, recommendations

The shirt is the most difficult element of a suit to sew from scratch. First you need to take all the necessary measurements and make a pattern - this is the most difficult and important step. You may have to tinker with the basics of patterning and sewing, but in some cases the game is worth the effort.

In its “raw” form you should have a back, a yoke, two shelves, two sleeves, a stand, cuffs and a pocket. Be sure to leave a seam allowance of one and a half to two centimeters. All parts must be joined together using a shirt seam on a machine.

If everything seems too complicated, you can make a Russian folk shirt - this option looks no worse than the classic one, but is much easier to make. To match the look, it would be appropriate to sew bright buttons onto the fabric down from the neckline.

To make a Russian shirt for a boy, you need to measure the distance from the shoulder to the middle of the thigh, arm circumference, hip circumference, arm length, neck length. Next, you need to model a shirt pattern of a suitable size using the sample above. All parts (including seam allowances) need to be cut out and sewn on a machine.

And the most important element of the costume, which everyone will probably name, is a huge blue hat with a tassel on the top.

We make the hat from cardboard or sewn from fabric. When sewing from fabric, you need to make sure that the margins are rigid, i.e. use a frame made of cardboard, thick non-woven fabric, etc.

If you have a lady’s hat with large brims at home, then you can use it as a base (sheathed or repainted).

You can make the remaining parts using the following pattern (don’t forget to adjust it to the size of your child):

The fabric doesn’t have to be expensive; both lining fabric and crepe-satin will look good here.

If you don’t have the opportunity to sew a suit, then you just need to choose bright, wide clothes.

Classic black trousers are also suitable. The main thing is to take a bright shirt. Instead of a tie, tie a wide bright ribbon.

The main accessory for the Dunno costume is a hat. This is what should be emphasized. And the clothes can be from the wardrobe. For a suit, for example, an orange shirt and a green tie are suitable.

Also, to complete the picture, you can complement the Dunno costume with a thin trouser strap. But this solution is only appropriate if the child tucks his shirt into his pants.

The tassel on the hat is another not-so-obvious attribute of Dunno’s costume, which you can completely do without. But if time allows, and your hands require work, then you can make such a decoration.

In conclusion, it should be noted that almost any shoes are suitable for such a New Year’s costume: Czech shoes, sandals, boots. The main thing is to combine them with bright, perhaps striped socks, which do not necessarily match the color of other elements of the outfit.

What and for whom can a suit be useful?

The character Dunno is fictional and fabulous.

According to the plot of the book, he is a cheerful boy who does not want to live up to his name and thinks outside the box. He is kind, mischievous and friendly. That is why both boys and girls want to be like him.

There can be many reasons to dress up as Dunno. The main thing is that the child not only puts on the costume, but also understands the character traits of this hero. This is another opportunity to reread the work and discuss it with the whole family. Even a small child will be able to be interested in this wonderful book.

The image of Dunno will be appropriate at any event:

• New Year's party in kindergarten or school.
• Children's birthday. The costume can be worn by either the birthday boy himself or any of the guests.
• Any costumed event (for example, a holiday based on fairy tales).
• Theatrical performance in the school theater.

How to make a Dunno hat with your own hands

The hat can be made from whatman paper, having first let it rest under a press so that the finished hat does not roll up. The brim of the hat and the base (crown) should be blue, with zeros on both sides. Glue the base of the hat along the side allowance. When cutting out the brim of a hat, it is necessary to add a gluing allowance along the inner circumference of the part 1 cm wide and cut it. (apply glue to the allowance for gluing the brim of the hat and glue them to the main part so that the allowance is on the wrong side of the hat. Paint the hat or cover it with blue paper.

Note: For gluing paper parts, it is better to use IVA glue or a glue stick. Regular office glue leaves sloppy, glossy spots on paper, so it’s best not to use it.

Glue a tassel to the top of the hat, which is done as follows: a sheet of paper (preferably corrugated) is cut into strips, not reaching the edge, and rolled tightly at the uncut end, secured with thread or tape.

Dunno's mischievous swirls can be painted on the hat with yellow paint or cut out from not very thick paper, painted yellow, curled with scissors or a pencil, and then glued to the hat.

A hat-cap for Dunno can be made using the following materials:

1) felt or colored cardboard;

2) scissors;

3) glue.

Consider the option with felt. You need to cut a cone out of felt, and then sew it carefully directly along the fold line.

To make the fields, you need to cut out a circle according to the attached diagram. The diameter of the hole must be made taking into account the diameter of the head plus 1 centimeter. Don't forget to leave trapezoidal allowances along the diameter of the innermost hole so you can then connect the brim to the cone.

In order to make a Dunno hat, prepare thick paper or cardboard on which to draw a pattern for the brim of the hat.

Cut out the brim of the hat, which you will cover with fabric; you can not sew it on, but simply glue it with super glue, or simply staple it together. Roll a cone from the same thick paper, and then cover it with a cloth as well. At the end, all that remains is to fasten the brim of the hat to the cone.

For an even simpler method, you can not cover the hat with fabric, but simply paint it with blue paint or paste it with colored paper.

Be sure to leave a couple of extra centimeters at the cone so that it can be easier to glue (sew) to the brim of the hat.

At the end, glue a tassel to the top of the cone, which can be made from corrugated paper by simply cutting it into equal strips.

Sewing it is quite simple. To do this, you will need the most ordinary Whatman paper. You can take another sheet of thick paper. You just need an even sheet, otherwise the finished hat will be wrapped in a tube.

Here is a drawing of a hat, where the number 17 is the circumference of the child’s head. As you can see, everything is not difficult at all. Afterwards, you can paint the hat with blue gouache paint, you can also cover it with blue fabric and cover it with colored paper. Don't forget yellow hair and a tie. And you won’t know where to go.

Of course, there is another option to buy ready-made, but it will cost more.

Dunno's hat is made of three parts:

1. The cone, the bottom around the circumference of the head, is made from a piece of thick paper or soft cardboard. The depth is a maximum of 15 centimeters, so that it fits on your head, then it can be adjusted with a pillow, or you can make a hat out of fabric and secure it in a cone.
2. The tail on the cone is attached to the top of the cone.
3. The brim of the hat, here the dimensions are optional, and the inner one is the size of the cylinder of the beginning of the cone.
