New Year's crafts using quilling technique: 80+ step-by-step master classes with photos

Quilling is a real art of twisting paper. The word quilling comes from the English word quill, which means bird's feather. Paper rolling is popular with creative people who can create a real masterpiece from ordinary multi-colored paper.

The quilling technique is based on the use of paper strips that are wound onto a thin rod, needle, or tube. Previously, a quill pen was used for this, but now inexpensive and affordable materials are available for sale. Beginners can quickly and easily learn the technique of paper rolling, the main thing is diligence, accuracy and imagination.

Tools you need to master quilling

To learn quilling you do not need to invest in expensive equipment and materials. Stock up on colorful paper and learn a simple twisting technique. Simple manipulations with your hands will allow you to make beautiful figures and patterns.

For quilling you will need the following tools:

  1. Paper. It is cut into long strips of different widths. There are also machines designed for cutting. Keep in mind that regular paper on the edge side produces a white color, so you will need special paper for quilling;
  2. Pen. Instead, you can use a needle, match, drinking straw, rod;
  3. Sample. It is represented by a ruler with circles of different diameters;
  4. Tweezers. It is recommended to give preference to tweezers with a sharp tip. It is designed for gluing individual elements that are difficult to grasp with your fingers. It is advisable to buy a set to move and glue the figures;
  5. Glue. It is best to use PVA glue or a pencil for the job. The glue should be transparent. It is not worth applying a lot of it, so as not to deform the paper.

Basic elements of technique for beginners

The technique of creating different elements in the quilling direction involves making simple blanks from multi-colored paper. To do this, you need to screw the strip onto the base. After this, the tight spiral is unraveled. Afterwards, the resulting element is given the desired shape, and the edge is secured using glue.

The main figures of paper twisting are:

  • Tight spiral, also called roll. The paper tape must be screwed onto the rod, and then carefully glue the edge on the resulting element;

  • Free roll. After the spiral has been wound, it is unraveled. The roll can be open or closed.

  • Spiral with an offset center. We insert a needle in the middle, and the layers of paper tape should be glued together on top;

  • A drop. We create a roll of any diameter, and then, using the thumb and index finger, we take the product by the flat sides and squeeze it. The element will take the desired drop shape;

  • Leaf. The roll is made in the form of a drop. Its wide part is located between two fingers - the thumb and forefinger. We bend the element slightly. After we release the figure, it diverges a little and the desired figure is obtained;

  • Eye. To create it you will need a tight spiral of any diameter. The roll must be grasped on both sides by the vertical sides. We slightly compress the figure so that the turns can be distributed evenly;

  • Triangle. Bend a tight spiral into a drop. We compress its narrow part to get the desired figure. The element is ready.

Also, using the quilling technique, you can create objects in the shape of a square, rose, oval, diamond, and other elements. Simple figures allow you to create cute compositions for children.

To master quilling there is no need to rush; all movements must be clear and accurate. Study each element carefully while creating a new figure. Thus, you can become a real craftsman and make wonderful crafts from multi-colored paper.

Using the quilling technique, you can create amazingly beautiful crafts, decorate holiday cards, gifts and much more. As the New Year approaches, interest in paper rolling increases not only among beginners, but also among experienced craftsmen.

White snowflake

Master class by Tatiana Yablonskaya.

For work, take the following materials: - white strips of paper; - a tube of PVA glue; - a thin stick (or a special tool); - a sheet of cardboard; — transparent file for documents.

From the white stripes, using a thin wooden stick, twist 16 blanks, which are called “free spiral”. You can use two shades of white: milky and slightly creamy. Then you need to twist 8 parts of each color. For more information about the elements, see the article “Quilling for Beginners”.

Form “eye” elements from spirals (they are also called “leaf”). To do this, you need to flatten the round workpiece a little with your fingers, making corners on opposite edges.

Also form loose spirals of smaller diameter. You also need to choose the color and you will need 17 pieces in total.

Now start forming the snowflake. You need to work on a slippery surface; to do this, place the document file on thick cardboard. Place the cream elements in a circle and place one small spiral in the center. Apply glue to the side of the elements, at the junctions with other workpieces.

It turns out to be such a white flower.

Next, take the milky elements and glue them between the creamy elements.

All that remains is to glue round elements to each sharp corner. The snowflake is almost ready.

If you want to use it as a decoration for the Christmas tree, then you need to attach a thread and form a loop. This is how an openwork snowflake looks on the branches of a spruce tree.

You can make not only white snowflakes; crafts made from bright elements also look very beautiful. Remember, the larger the diameter of the “loose rolls”, the more voluminous your craft will be.

Snowflake "herringbone"

This tutorial shows how to make a beautiful snowflake in green tones. To make it you will need only 24 parts, but of three types. If you have a set of quilling strips that have green stripes of different shades, then you will get a beautiful snowflake like this. Master class by Elena Nikolaeva.

Materials for work:

  • quilling set with stick;
  • glue in a jar with a thin spout;
  • half beads.

How to make a quilling snowflake step by step

Prepare strips for work. For example, you can use 4 green shades - dark and light.

Using a split stick, create wound circles and then shape them into different shapes.

Tape the end of each strip. To make a drop, press down on one side, but before doing this, loosen the rolls a little. For large central leaves, use 2 stripes of different shades. Having created a droplet, glue the second strip to it and start winding.

Wrap a dark strip around each droplet, and you will get two-color beautiful details, that is, green droplet rolls with a dark edging.

Glue all the droplets together with sharp parts around the circumference, and you will get a beautiful flower with 6 petals.

Additionally, make loose rolls using the same pattern. Press them with your fingers on both sides to give them a leaf shape.

Make 6 lighter pieces and 12 darker pieces of the same shape.

Attach the parts in the amount of 12 pieces in pairs into the recess between the droplets.

Glue all the split leaves. Glue lighter leaves into the resulting holes.

Thus, you will get a beautiful green snowflake with six rays.

Decorate the center of the craft with a large half-bead, and decorate the rays with small rhinestones. The bright New Year's product is ready.

We make a paper frame (we do not glue the strips to the base), then we glue the elements only to the frame strips and glue them together. When the frame is completely decorated with quilling elements, it must be removed from the base and the second half of the ball made in the same way. After this, carefully glue the two hemispheres and voila! The New Year's volumetric ball using the quilling technique is ready!

Christmas tree decoration made of paper

For this master class you will need:

  • strips of paper;
  • glue;
  • scissors;
  • quilling tool;
  • geometric ruler.

You can either buy paper strips at a craft store or make them yourself. You will have to make a large number of strips (the strips should be 0.5 cm wide). Fold six strips in half (they should be approximately 14 cm long).

Take six more strips (but 27 cm long) and roll them into a spiral.

Remove the spiral from the quilling tool and set it aside so that it unravels a little, then glue the tip. It is advisable to make all six spirals the same size; you can check this using a geometric ruler.

Compress one end of the spiral into a corner (as in the photo).

The result is a “drop” element.

Take the first six strips, folded in half and glue drops inside each fold. Glue the bent strips together with glue. The result is a figure similar to a snowflake.

Prepare and fold six strips in half (14 cm each) again.

Glue the top parts of the strips together and bend the remaining ends to the sides.

Curl the ends that stick out using a quilling tool. The result is “hearts”.

Make 12 "S" curls using the same tool.

Glue the “hearts” with the snowflake obtained earlier.

Next, glue the “S” curls as shown in the photo.

Twist six spirals in the same way (the length of the strip is 54 cm), glue the free edges, and then pinch the corners, but on both sides. The result is “leaves”.

After this, prepare six more elements (length of strips 27 cm). Fold in half and twist the spirals from opposite ends in different directions.

These elements resemble birds or horns.

Glue the “leaves” and “horns” together.

Attach the resulting figures to the “S” curls.

Prepare six more drops as before.

Trim the protruding straight strips a little with scissors.

Glue the droplets to the place where you cut them off. Wait until the craft dries.

The big snowflake is ready!

Let's learn New Year's quilling and make elegant Christmas trees

On the eve of the New Year holidays, quilling makes it possible to decorate your home with many original crafts. A creative approach and a little time will allow you to bring a truly magical mood to your home. A Christmas tree created using the quilling technique will become an original and unique decoration.

Volumetric Christmas tree

A miniature Christmas tree, created by yourself, will be a memorable and pleasant surprise for colleagues and friends. It’s not at all difficult to make if you follow the description provided in the MK. You will need for work:

  • green and brown quilling paper (3 and 7 mm wide);
  • pattern;
  • glue (gun and PVA);
  • tweezers;
  • scissors.

Step-by-step master class. Rolls are made from brown strips. They should not be tight; you can use a regular marker as the base of the rolls. The ends of the strip are lubricated with glue and secured.

You will need two such rolls, which will become the basis of the future Christmas tree. Using a quilling tool or a split toothpick, roll the green rolls.

They are expanded to a diameter of 16 mm (a pattern is used for accuracy). To make it easier to remove the roll from the pattern, insert a toothpick into the center of the spiral and move it to the edge of the hole. The edge of the spiral is secured with glue.

Now the roll is given a teardrop shape by squeezing it on one side with your fingers. To form the first tier of the tree you will need 10 drops. It's better to make one spare.

Each drop is then wrapped in a white strip of paper and secured with glue.

Drops from the bottom row of the tree are glued to the brown roll. While the glue dries, you can start twisting the next drops. For the second tier you will need 9 drops, similar in size and manufacturing method to the previous ones. The second brown roll is smeared with glue from below and placed on the first tier, then droplets are glued to it.

The third row of the Christmas tree is formed from smaller drops (from spirals with a diameter of 14 mm). You will need 7 of them. They are attached directly to the drops of the second row.

The fourth and fifth rows are made in the same way, only for the fourth they use 6 drops (13 mm), and for the fifth - only 5 (13 mm). The last, sixth row of the tree consists of 4 drops (13 mm).

First, two of them are glued - opposite each other. Then the remaining two close the gaps.

The top of the Christmas tree using the quilling technique can be made from a bead or an inverted drop. You can decorate it as you wish - with beads, paper balls or seed beads.

Greeting card with Christmas tree

Quilling offers a huge number of ideas and templates for creating greeting cards. Thanks to detailed descriptions, even beginners will be able to make such a gift themselves. What you will need to create a Christmas tree:

  • tools – awl, sharp scissors, glue;
  • blank base for a postcard;
  • sheet of cardboard;
  • stained glass (or any other) paints with mother of pearl;
  • several satin ribbons.

Instructions for creation. The work of creating a postcard in the quilling style begins with preparing the main details of the Christmas tree. To do this, rolls are twisted from green paper using an awl, which are then opened to a diameter of 15 mm and secured with glue. These figures are then turned into drops by squeezing one end with your fingers.

After this, the droplet is bent slightly to obtain a curved droplet. There is an example in the photo. Now they repeat all these steps step by step to obtain 35 drops - approximately how many will be needed to create a postcard in A6 size.

Christmas tree decorations are quite easy to make. Half of the paper tape is twisted into the tightest possible roll and the tip is secured, then the bottom is squeezed out of it, forming a cone. How many of these decorations are needed depends on the wishes of the creator, the size of the postcard and the tree itself.

To make the Christmas tree fluffier, several curls are inserted between the drops. They can be made according to the following scheme: four green stripes are connected and slightly twisted on one side. From the other edge, the ends of the strips are pulled up, forming a curl, and secured with a drop of glue:

  • The number of curls depends on your desire.

The last question remains: how to make one Christmas tree out of all these elements? To do this, all prepared parts are sequentially glued to the workpiece. It is better to start from the top branches. From time to time you can add curls between the droplets:

The shape of the Christmas tree is determined by your imagination and desire. All parts can be easily attached to paper using regular PVA.

Once the entire tree is assembled, you can start decorating it. You can attach a satin ribbon bow to the top or come up with your own version of the decoration.

Just a little time and a magical DIY postcard is ready to delight and create a festive mood!
