Barbecue in the shape of a steam locomotive: making it yourself

A barbecue is a device for preparing dishes using an open fire. It has a long history, and over time its original external characteristics have changed a little. The brazier in its homeland, the East, has a bowl-shaped shape, while in Russia it is rectangular. There are many modifications and options for this device.

Some options are designed for carrying, while others perform not only the function of cooking, but are also decorative elements in landscapes.

The barbecue locomotive
can be located on the site or in the yard , thereby becoming an original decoration.

How to do it?

Roasters in the shape of steam locomotives have a very attractive appearance and fit well into the designs of cottages and courtyards. A purchased barbecue, made by the hands of a master, will cost a considerable amount. If you make it yourself, the financial costs of the product will be lower. Work on its production must be carried out in stages :

  1. Selection of the optimal project option. At this stage, it is very important to decide on the final look - this will help in the future to make all the necessary calculations on the amount of material and not make a mistake.
  2. Drawing up a drawing or diagram. A correctly drawn up drawing guarantees a good result.
  3. Selection of all necessary tools and materials.
  4. Making the frame.
  5. Manufacturing of the body.
  6. Making wheels and decorating. It is better to prepare the wheels and weld them to the frame before installing the body.
  7. Creation of additional devices.
  8. Cleaning up.
  9. Coloring.

It is unlikely that you will be able to make such a grill in one day, but in a few days, provided that each stage is quickly completed, it is quite possible.

Getting to know the product features

Before you make your own barbecue or buy a steam locomotive, you need to familiarize yourself with its key features, its function, which is to cook food on coals right in your garden. Also, this type of unit has a number of additional functions; manufacturing materials also play an equally important role.

A barbecue in the shape of a steam locomotive is in all cases, without exception, made of metal, which is characterized by high strength, durability, and resistance to high temperatures. Moreover, a product of a certain shape and outline can be made from metal, since metal is very easy to process, cut, and bend.

Also, as a more expensive alternative, craftsmen and manufacturers often use cast iron; it has a higher cost, since it is more wear-resistant and accumulates thermal energy well. In order to reduce the cost of manufacturing a unit in the form of a steam locomotive, some people make from cast iron only individual elements that are subject to greater heat, such as grates.

The steam locomotive grill, photos of which you can find and get acquainted with in detail in our article, allows you to prepare aromatic, juicy and appetizing dishes (vegetables, meat, fish, poultry). Juiciness is achieved not only due to the design features of garden structures, coal, wood, but also through the use of metal for assembly, which allows a crispy, golden and appetizing crust to form on the food.

It is important to choose the right steel for making a barbecue with your own hands - it should be a metal with sufficient thickness; in places of the strongest heating and contact with fuel and fire, the thickness should not be less than eight millimeters. This will not allow the material to become thinner over time, deform, or lose its properties and strength.

A barbecue in the shape of a steam locomotive can have a number of characteristic features and structural elements:

Structural element Description, features
grill Allows you to cook food with the lid open.

For frying, a special grill or skewers are used, the attachments to which are made in advance.

B-B-Q It also allows you to cook meat and other products on a cast iron or steel grate.

Unlike the grill option, the grill makes the dish very tender and juicy due to the fact that it is cooked only with the lid closed.

Hot smoking The grill can also be supplemented with a compartment for hot smoking.

Often, for these purposes, the master is not puzzled and simply uses the barbecue compartment for these purposes.

Cold smoking If necessary, you can buy or assemble a garden unit with your own hands, which will have a compartment for cold smoking.

It should be located as far as possible from the fire and main structural elements.

The optimal location is the side of the garden unit.

The grill can be supplemented with other equally important structural elements, such as shelves, work surfaces for serving dishes, preparing them for serving, and cooking. In order to protect the device from precipitation on the fryer, the locomotive is equipped with a convenient canopy that acts as a roof.

The barbecue-smokehouse-steam locomotive can have a different design, the installation can be supplemented with thematic details and devices that form the image of the real model. For example, it is supplemented with pistons, cylinders, grates, pipes through which combustion products are discharged; such inserts can be either forged or completely cast.

When thinking through a design project, it is necessary to pay special attention not only to the decor of the locomotive, its functionality, manufacturing materials, but also its dimensions, which are formed and selected based on the free area of the garden, its layout, the presence of other objects such as gazebos, verandas, sheds, baths .

As a support, it will be convenient to use not simple legs, but wheels, which are assembled from metal rods, and they must be strong enough, strong, well secured, all seams and joints are processed with a welding machine.

The price for a barbecue steam locomotive can be different and depends on:

  • Selected materials;
  • Overall dimensions;
  • Functionality;
  • Number of working sections;
  • Complexity and quantity of decorative components;
  • The presence of additional equipment, rack shelves, work surfaces;
  • Structure masses;
  • Difficulties in assembly and installation.

Due to the fact that the price for a ready-made variation or one made to order will be at least several tens of thousands of rubles, the best option would be to make a garden unit yourself.

If necessary, such a device can be supplemented with functional shelves, hooks, a chimney, and a canopy. For example, hooks can be hung on the frame of the product; they are made of thick wire; accessories such as tongs or a poker are hung on them. It will be convenient to store dishes, cutlery and other kitchen utensils on the shelves; they are made of thin sheet steel and radiator grilles. The canopy or roof should be as functional and correct in shape as possible, which will allow water and snow to drain/fall down and not fall on the grate, the surface on which food is cooked.

It is important to choose the right paint that will act as a protective barrier for steel or cast iron; it must be fireproof, non-toxic, and protect the product from rust and corrosion.

Required Tools

The selection of all the necessary materials can be carried out with greater accuracy on the basis of the finished drawing . After the project has already been selected, you can start by drawing up a sketch, from which the master will draw up drawings. If we are talking about doing the work yourself, the drawing should reflect all the elements, their sizes and distances between them. An example of the finished drawing is shown below (see image).

When the drawing is ready,
you should proceed to the selection of tools .
Required:

  • welding machine;
  • grinders (for cutting metal);
  • pliers;
  • hammer;
  • screws;
  • screwdrivers;
  • fireproof paint (for painting the finished brazier).

Having selected all of the indicated items, you should proceed to the next stage.

Design of a barbecue-steam locomotive

When designing a device for preparing food over an open fire, you need to pay attention to 2 main elements:

  • chimney;
  • compartment where burning coals or firewood are located.

The first thing that distinguishes the locomotive design is the pipe.
It performs two functions :

  • smoke exhaust;
  • distinctive element.

Secondly, the design must necessarily include a place where coal or firewood is burned. Through the combustion process of these materials, delicious dishes are prepared.

The grill performs aesthetic and practical functions. It can be equipped with maximum comfort if you provide:

  • shelves where dishes and firewood are located;
  • grates (grill, barbecue);
  • chamber for hot or cold smoking.

A diagram of a standard locomotive-shaped roaster design includes:

  • grill chamber - located in the horizontal direction;
  • barbecue chamber located in the horizontal direction;
  • camera located in the vertical direction.

Design and drawings

Each type of locomotive barbecue can be unique and original in its own way. Many craftsmen provide them with many compartments and compartments for preparing various dishes, not just barbecue. However, in any of the designs we will need 2 departments:

  • place for coals or firewood;
  • compartment with smoke exhaust.

The locomotive barbecue has a common shape that distinguishes it from other barbecues: the presence of a characteristic pipe. It precisely performs the function of removing smoke from burnt fuel. In the more or less classic design of a steam locomotive, chambers for grilling and barbecuing are provided separately, located in the horizontal direction. You can also think about a box in the locomotive barbecue for hot and cold smoking, a place for a grate and a compartment for storing firewood and coals, as well as ignition accessories.

Drawings for such a complex craft are simply necessary, and they establish what the final appearance of the grill will be. All precise markings are transferred to the drawings, and the dimensions of all individual elements are also indicated. Considering that outwardly it will look like a steam locomotive, at the drawing stage the number of cars and wheels is thought out.

At each stage of assembly, the design is checked against the drawings. Most often, the initial basis for this type of barbecue is an old gas cylinder with a capacity of 50 liters. In addition to it, you will need a lot of scraps and sheets of metal, the thickness of which is desirable at 8 mm. This value is sufficient for safe contact with fire.

Other decorative elements of a locomotive barbecue made from a gas cylinder can be made by casting or forging. They are made as varied as the imagination of the master allows. In addition to being a decorative option, individual elements can bring real practical benefits. For example, wheels can be made movable to move a locomotive around the site. It is very convenient to provide lighting in the form of flashlights.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing begins with checking the quality of drawings according to the following parameters:

  1. presence of accurate markings;
  2. indication of the sizes of all elements.

After checking the quality of the drawing, you need to carefully consider the design according to:

  1. number of wheels;
  2. number of wagons.

If you can imagine the finished structure in your imagination and the result is satisfactory, you should begin preparing the materials.
Each stage of construction is carried out by repeatedly comparing the assembled structure with the drawing.

The base should be a durable fireproof metal. Suitable:

  • gas cylinders with a volume of 50 liters;
  • steel, cast iron products.

The recommended thickness of materials for surfaces in contact with fire is from 8 mm . Otherwise, with a smaller thickness, deformation and distortion of the structure are possible.

Production material

The main material used in the production of such barbecues is metal. Positive characteristics are based on the durability and strength of metal structures. They can easily withstand high temperatures, are malleable during the forging process, and can take on a variety of configurations. We advise you to additionally read on our website an article on the topic of creating a barbecue oven from metal.

If we take an example from the production process in a factory, steel or cast iron can be used here. All structural parts will also be made from the selected material.

It is important to know! The speed and juiciness of the cooked shish kebab depends only on the characteristics of the grill. Therefore, when designing a circuit, it is worth paying attention to the height of the combustion bowl. The distance from the coals to the skewer with meat should be no more than 8-10 cm.

A very important aspect when choosing a material is sufficient thickness. If selected correctly, a metal product will last for a long time.

The thickness of the surface in contact with the fire should be 8 mm, or more. If you do not adhere to such indicators, the metal will become thinner over time. As a result, this will lead to complete deformation of the structure from its own weight.

Design

There are a lot of design options for a barbecue in the shape of a steam locomotive. Parts from:

  • casting;
  • forging

Decorative parts are distinguished by their specificity and diversity thanks to the unlimited imagination of the master.
Decorative elements can simultaneously perform a practical function: wheels move the product and serve as decoration. The diameter of the wheels can be the same or different in pairs (front, rear), the number of pairs of wheels can be two or more. Individual decorative elements (bell, lantern) serve as illumination.

The dimensions of the barbecue are determined by the amount of space for installation, but are not a limitation on functionality. A small Dutch oven can combine all the necessary elements (see example in the images below).

Wheels and decorative elements

Craftsmen advise making wheels for barbecues and installing them on the frame before installing the housing. Depending on the size of the structure, three or more pairs of wheels may be required. Quite often rings of different diameters are used.

Photo 12 Wheels of different sizes will make the barbecue-steam locomotive more impressive.

The production material for the wheels is pipe cutting of the same width. It is important not to forget about the required stability for the stove structure, so you should not make them too narrow. You can decorate the inside of the ring with bent rods, strips of iron, etc.

Necessary materials

For the independent process of manufacturing this version of the fryer design you will need:

  • metal in large quantities;
  • various combinations of metals.

A large amount of metal includes a list of required materials consisting of:

  1. pipes (profiled ones are suitable);
  2. tank;
  3. barrels;
  4. sheet metal;
  5. empty gas cylinders;
  6. fittings, steel rods;
  7. corners.

It is possible to use other materials besides those listed.
Some elements can be made separately in a workshop to order; they are made from:

  1. become;
  2. cast iron

Selection of materials and set of tools

To make your own grill-steam locomotive you will need various metal bases. Depending on the capabilities, the appearance of the structure will vary.

The main materials used for the main body, frame structure, chimney, wheels and canopy are:

  • steel pipes of the required diameter;
  • profile pipe;
  • tank, barrel, gas cylinder, can and other similar configuration products;
  • sheet metal;
  • construction fittings, rods;
  • corners, etc.

Photo 5 Part of the steel pipe used to lay the gas main line is ideal for arranging the main body of the grill-steam locomotive.

Since metal can be processed and deformed, this will require a special tool. In a factory setting, cutting large-diameter pipes will be done with a hacksaw; for home purposes, it will be enough to use:

  • Bulgarians;
  • rasp;
  • welding machine;
  • a device for artistic forging called a “snail”. This device is used to process metal workpieces.
  • Electric drills.
  • Hammer and sledgehammer.

It is important to know! At home, you can make your own mechanisms for bending rods and forging decorative elements. The presence of such devices simplifies the process of manufacturing decorative elements (curls of various shapes).

Photo 6 Pipe scraps can serve as wheels.

Welded frame

A welded frame is manufactured according to the prepared drawing . It represents the frame of the future product. A welded frame can be made from:

  • profiled pipes (the cross-section can be square);
  • round pipes;
  • corners;
  • reinforcing bars.

Once the appropriate material has been selected, you will need :

  1. Using a grinder, cut the elements.
  2. Connect all structural elements using a welding machine.
  3. Leave until the finished frame has cooled completely.
  4. Clean the seams on the cooled frame using a grinder (you need a sanding attachment) or a file.
  5. Inspect the finished frame.
  6. If a defect is identified, you need to remove excess metal and repeat the welding.

When all the steps are completed and no defects are detected on the frame, you should move on to the next stage - manufacturing the body.

Frame design

Initially, you need to decide on the dimensions of the future barbecue and start producing a frame frame. To accurately reproduce the shape of the idea, square profile pipes or ordinary round pipes, corners or reinforcement bars are ideal.

Photo 7 Finished part of a welded frame made of profile pipe.

Even at the time of design, the dimensions and required quantity of all parts must be determined. Mounting areas are also provided for placing wheels, a frame for the main body and additional elements. Due to the transverse frame bars, which serve as connecting parts, the product acquires better characteristics.

All parts are fastened using the welding method, which requires a device of the same name. After the metal has cooled, the seams are cleaned with a grinder and a grinding disc. If defects in the joints are identified, the solders are cut off and the welding process is repeated.

Frame

To create a horizontal body, use :

  • empty gas cylinders;
  • tank;
  • can.

It is possible to use other items that are suitable for this. If an empty gas cylinder is used as a housing, it must be properly disassembled.

Rules and sequence of working with cylinders:

  1. Remaining gases are released.
  2. The crane is twisted.
  3. If you cannot twist the tap, you must use a gas wrench.
  4. If the transitions from the tap to the cylinder are covered with rust, water is poured inside. The balloon is completely filled with water through a dropper.

Water is poured into the cylinders under cover to prevent clogging.
When clogging, water is poured in small portions .

When the cylinder is prepared, proceed to the construction of the hull structure:

  1. The top is cut using a grinder.
  2. The cut out part is welded and placed on the hinges.
  3. A handle is mounted to the resulting lid.
  4. If pipes are used, the side parts are plugged.

It is recommended to make handles from wood. This will prevent skin burns.

The first body element is ready. Now you need to build a side chamber:

  1. Using sheet steel, the box is welded.
  2. Through the channel there is a connection between the box and the tank.

The chamber may have a lid or door.
When two parts are ready:

  1. The body and frame are connected by electric welding.
  2. The sides of the frame are covered with metal sheets.

This completes the creation of the frame.

Making a barbecue locomotive with your own hands

In order to independently produce a product of such a complex design and detail, it is first recommended to consider several options for ready-made barbecues of this type. It would also be useful to study the visual aspects of the design of real steam locomotives, which are prototypes for complex barbecue makers.

Selection of materials and tools

In order to make a barbecue locomotive with your own hands, you will need a large amount of metal in different designs. The appearance of the future product will largely depend on what options are available to you.

To create a body, frame, wheels, pipes, canopy and various auxiliary elements, you may need the following materials:

  • steel pipes of different diameters;
  • tank, barrel, empty gas cylinder, can and similar items;
  • sheet metal;
  • profile pipe;
  • steel rods, fittings;
  • corners, etc.

A piece of main pipe is an ideal material for making a locomotive body

You will also need a special tool to process metal. To cut pipes in a production environment, a special machine is used, but at home you can get by with the following set of devices:

  • Bulgarian;
  • file;
  • welding machine;
  • “snail” for forging;
  • drill;
  • hammer or sledgehammer.

Please note: you can also make a machine for creating forged decor yourself. With its help, you can make curls of any shape from an ordinary rod, depending on the parameters of the “snail”.

Wheels are made from pipe scraps

Frame

The beginning of work involves determining the dimensions of the future structure and manufacturing the frame. In order to create a durable frame that fits perfectly into the overall design, you can use a profiled pipe with a square cross-section, a regular round tube, reinforcing bars, corners, etc.

Welded frame made of profiled pipe

The number of required elements and their dimensions are determined during the drawing up process. There must be places for mounting wheels, a frame for mounting the body and auxiliary elements. The cross members also act as a connecting element and strengthen the product.

To connect the parts cut with a grinder, you will need a welding machine. After the metal has cooled, all seams need to be cleaned with a grinder wheel and a file. If soldering defects are detected, excess metal must be cut off and the welding procedure repeated.

Frame

Creating a case allows you to experiment with the design of the product. A standard steam locomotive grill requires the presence of a horizontal barbecue grill and a vertical chamber, which can be used for smoking food. Some models instead contain an open grill or adjacent firebox. We recommend reading the material about manufacturers of country grills on our website.

A standard steam locomotive grill has a horizontal barbecue grill and a vertical chamber that can be used for smoking food

In order to make a horizontal case you can use:

  • large diameter pipe;
  • used gas cylinder;
  • tank;
  • can.

The lower part of the body can be cut from a cylinder. It has a barbecue cover

First you need to cut the selected material to the size you need. To install a barbecue, the upper part of the pipe is cut off. Then the same section is welded onto the hinges and installed as a cover. It should also be equipped with a handle, preferably with a wooden attachment to protect against burns during operation.

If a regular pipe is taken as a basis, then you need to think about how and what to make the nose plug from.

Please note: a cylinder or solid tank is convenient to use due to the rounded bottom. If you take a regular pipe, you will have to think about how and what to make a nose plug for it from.

The second part of the body is a rectangular side chamber. It is connected by a channel to the main tank. This element can be made from ordinary steel sheets. They are welded together to form a box. It is convenient to use corner profiles to create a frame. Additionally, you can make a lid or cut out a door in the side.

An additional side part, which plays the role of a smokehouse, can be welded from sheet metal

The frame and both parts of the body are connected to each other by a welding seam. The sides of the frame are covered with a sheet of metal.

Wheels and decor

The next element is the wheels. It is recommended to make them in advance and weld them to the frame before installing the body. Since the barbecue is made in the shape of a steam locomotive, you will need 3-4 pairs of wheels. For a more impressive appearance, they can be made of different diameters.

For efficiency, wheels are made of different diameters

A pipe is used to make wheels. For the rear elements, a larger diameter is taken than for the front ones. It is necessary to cut rings of the same width. It is important to make them wide enough to ensure the stability of the barbecue.

You can cut rings for wheels using a grinder from a pipe of a suitable diameter.

To decorate the inside, rods, strips of iron, rivets and decorative curls are used. The latter can be made independently using a cold forging machine. The sides of the train are also decorated with various curls and spirals.

Decor in the form of curls for a steam locomotive can be made using cold forging

Don't forget to make grilles, pistons and other decorations to give the product an atmospheric look.

Wheels and decor

It is recommended that the installation and manufacture of wheels be carried out before the body is mounted. They are welded to the frame first, and then the body.

The number and diameter of wheels is determined by the selected design option. Most often they are prepared from pipes:

  1. Select the diameter of the pipes in accordance with the parameters in the drawing.
  2. Mark the segments.
  3. Using a grinder, cut out elements of a given width according to the markings.

Decoration is done:

  1. twigs;
  2. curls;
  3. with rivets.

Decorations can be made additionally . Forged elements made to order by a craftsman will perfectly decorate the product and make it unique.

The grill can be made entirely of forging.

An example is shown in the image.

A forged barbecue can only be made by a master.

Preparatory work

In order to make a multifunctional barbecue from a gas cylinder in the shape of a steam locomotive with your own hands, it is necessary to carry out a number of preparatory work. First, you should completely release all the gas remaining from the cylinder after using it. This should only be done outdoors, as the gas has an unpleasant specific odor, and away from possible sources of fire. In order to find out that gas is coming out of the cylinder, you can take ordinary soapy water and apply it to the valve outlet. If bubbles appear, this means that gas is escaping.

After emptying the cylinder, you must completely unscrew the gas valve, turn it upside down and pour out the remaining condensate. Then fill the cylinder with water and leave it for several days so that the pungent smell of methane or propane completely disappears. To do this, you can connect a flexible rubber hose to the cylinder and supply water under pressure. Further work with him will be safe.

You can view various drawings for creating a barbecue in the form of a steam locomotive, where the grill and barbecue will be located, and then select the optimal diagram indicating all the dimensions of the product and additional elements.

Dimensions of a standard gas cylinder (50 l):

  • height - 98 cm;
  • circle diameter - 30 cm;
  • wall thickness - 0.3 cm;
  • weight - 22 kg.

Tools and materials for work:

  • 1 gas cylinder (50 l);
  • 1 gas cylinder (12 or 5 l);
  • gas or electric welding machine;
  • electric grinder;
  • safety helmet or goggles;
  • gloves;
  • gas adjustable wrench;
  • rivets with gun;
  • steel hinges (3-4 pieces);
  • hammer;
  • screwdriver;
  • electric drill;
  • 1 steel pipe;
  • pipes or metal corners.

In order to make a barbecue in the form of a steam locomotive from a gas cylinder, you must first mark it according to the chosen scheme.

How to make legs for a barbecue?

There are braziers with legs. Craftsmen recommend equipping them with wheels. This will make the structure capable of transportation.

The height of the legs is prepared based on the wishes of the owners:

  1. In accordance with the parameters, markings are made on the selected pipes.
  2. The corresponding areas are cut out.
  3. The bottom of the device is equipped with four holes.
  4. Bolts are inserted into the holes with the threads facing outward.
  5. Each bolt is tightened and welded. With the help of them the legs are attached to the bottom.
  6. Nuts are welded at the top of the legs, with which they will be connected to the fryer.

Stages of making a barbecue

Let's take a step-by-step look at how to make a barbecue in the shape of a steam locomotive with grill and barbecue functions.

  1. Using an angle grinder and a metal wheel, you need to cut the cylinder along the previously marked lines. Before doing this, completely unscrew the valve or simply saw it off with a grinder.
  2. The lid must be attached to hinges, which are first secured with rivets and then welded to the lid and the bottom of the grill. Weld metal handles made from rebar on the sides of the grill. You can purchase iron door handles from a hardware store and bolt them on.
  3. In the upper part of the grill it is necessary to cut special recesses for installing skewers. They can be done in different steps at the discretion of the master. If necessary, you can place a grate on top of the grill for cooking grilled chicken or roasting vegetables.
  4. Then you need to weld the “wheels” to the grill. They can be made from an ordinary large-diameter metal pipe or metal sheet. To do this, you need to cut 4 identical pieces of pipe with a grinder and weld them to the bottom of the grill. You can cut 4 metal strips 20 cm wide and 40 cm long. Weld them into wheels simulating locomotive wheels and attach them to the barbecue by welding or bolting them.
  5. To ensure that the walls of the barbecue do not deform and to ensure additional rigidity of the structure, 2 corners should be welded inside along the entire length of the cylinder.
  6. In order to ensure a constant flow of air into the grill, it is recommended to drill about 10 or 15 large holes with a diameter of approximately 16 mm in random order using a grinder at the back of the product.
  7. On the side of the cylinder, where the valve was located, there remains a small round hole into which the exhaust pipe is inserted.
  8. 2-3 cast iron grates are placed on the bottom of the grill. This is necessary for regular air supply, as well as for additional circulation.

Additional accessories

Additionally, the roaster can be equipped with:

  • hooks;
  • shelves;
  • hood;
  • canopy

Dishes are stored on the shelves, hooks serve as hangers.
The material for the hooks is wire or nails. Excess smoke is removed using hoods.

Their construction:

  1. A pipe is mounted in the front of the housing or next to the chamber.
  2. A cone-shaped plate is welded at the top - thanks to it, precipitation will not get inside.

Sheds are made from sections of metal barrels.

After all additional elements have been installed and the structure is ready, it needs to be painted, which includes the following steps:

  1. Cleaning the surface with sandpaper.
  2. Degreasing the surface with a solvent.
  3. Coating with paint.

Corrosion protection is provided by the use of special fire-resistant thermal paints. All paint containers must state that they are suitable for use on metal surfaces. For the coloring composition, the following must additionally be indicated:

  • use at high temperatures (from 650 to 1000 degrees);
  • application tool (brush).

There are paints on sale that can withstand heat up to 1000 degrees.

They use composite materials and heat-resistant glass.

Handles and blower for fire

Once the welded frame and rack body are prepared, you can worry about what the stand, handles and other auxiliary components will be. In addition, such a roaster can be equipped with shelves, hooks, a canopy, and a hood. You can hang various utensils on hooks, and store dishes, etc. on shelves.

Hoods are useful because they remove excess smoke from combustion products outside. A pipe is welded into the front part of the body. A cone-shaped plate is welded on top to protect against rain. Canopies are made from sections of metal barrels. When the structure as a whole is assembled, it is coated with heat-resistant, fire-resistant paint. These paints contain heat-resistant glass and special composite components.

The appearance and shape of the handles are not particularly important. However, they must be heat-resistant. Wooden pieces are attached to the outside of the handles so as not to get burned by the hot metal. To prevent the lid from falling inward, a small metal strip is welded around the perimeter. It is necessary to make small recesses and cuts for the skewers in which they will be located.

Special attention is paid to pressurization from the cylinder, since oxygen must be supplied to the fuel. To do this, turn the grill upside down. At a distance of 10 cm from the seam, you need to make 2 longitudinal stripes, or many holes in a row through which air will flow. It is better not to touch the factory seams so as not to compromise the integrity of the structure.

Now you need to cut off the tap and insert a metal tube in its place. Through it, the system can be ventilated, and the remaining smoke can escape outside. At the very end of the work, they begin to paint the structure in their preferred color. The paint must be heat-resistant.

Making your own unique roaster is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. Most used containers and components can be found in a barn or in a country house. As a last resort, all this can be purchased at a hardware store or in the home goods department. If you show a little imagination, you can easily build a real work of art. If any of the readers have experience in making such a train, we invite you to share it in the comments after reading.

Grill-steam locomotive with smoking function

The element that distinguishes the grill-smokehouse is called the firebox. The manufacturing sequence is identical to the one above, but you need to make a firebox and a place for it separately. To do this you will need to do the following:

  1. The bottom of the cylinder is cut off by 1/2. This is where the firebox will be located.
  2. The cut is polished.
  3. A lid is attached to the bottom of the barbecue base on hinges.
  4. Holes are drilled at the bottom of the firebox.
  5. A box with a diameter of 10 to 15 cm (pipe) is welded to the bottom of the base.
  6. The chimney and smoking chamber are attached to the pipe. Any containers can be used for smoking chambers.

Examples of barbecues-steam locomotives with a smoking function (smokehouse) of industrial production (top) and do-it-yourself (bottom) are presented in the images below.

Additional designs

For many roaster owners, the issue of having additional accessories is an important issue. They make it more comfortable to use and also allow you to spend less time during preparation, for example, shelves, hooks, a canopy and a chimney. The last element is considered by some to be simply mandatory for a barbecue, especially if it has a smoking compartment.

Some barbecues are equipped with a chimney only as a decoration, but in most cases, this item fulfills its intended purpose. It is mounted on the front part of the barbecue grill or the side section is equipped with an outlet for combustion products. A conical plate must be welded on top to protect it from rain.

Lastly, all welds are cleaned, and the structure is painted with a special fire-resistant mixture. This finishing coating helps protect the metal from precipitation and corrosive formations.

Think about it, maybe your landscape design needs an original barbecue locomotive?

Barbecue steam locomotive from a gas cylinder

Another option for using a gas cylinder is to make a universal device called a “steam locomotive”. It is a four-in-one option. A grill, barbecue, barbecue and smokehouse are combined here. Outwardly, this grill really resembles a steam locomotive. It consists of several cylinder pipes, each of which has its own purpose.

Steam locomotives that combine pipes of different diameters look good. For this purpose, gas cylinders, main pipes and barrels are used. For wheels, parts of gas cylinders are taken; forging elements can be used. All parts of the structure are painted with heat-resistant paint that can withstand temperatures of 700 degrees . It will have to be updated from time to time.
